Looking for ancestors of William Henry SHANNON, born c. 1799 in SC, married Mahala GRIFFIS, born c. 1805 in SC. They are found in Autauga Co., Alabama for 1840 Census and Coosa Co., AL for 1850 census. Their children moved to Columbia Co., AR in mid 1850's. I can't find William or Mahala after 1850 census. Children: 1. Eliza Ann SHANNON (1827 AL - 1879 Columbia Co., AR), married John SNIDER 1845, Coosa Co., AL. 2. Mary Jane SHANNON married Anthony Latham SHAW 1849 Coosa Co., AL. I assume Mary died before 1850 Census Coosa Co., AL as Anthony and son Aaron are living with Anthony's mother (he remarried in 1851). 3. Sarah Elizabeth SHANNON (1832 AL - 1865 Columbia Co., AR), married Benjamin Baker WILSON 1848 in Coosa Co., AL. (I also descend from Benjamin Baker WILSON and his second wife Charlotte MILLER.) 4. Harriet Nunnelly SHANNON (1834 AL - 1894 Columbia Co., AR), married Albert ALLEN 1850 in Coosa Co., AL. --- MY LINE 5. Samuel SHANNON, born c. 1836 AL 6. Martha P. SHANNON (1839 AL - 1905 Columbia Co., AR), married Regganiard 'Gaynard' O'DELL 1853 in Coosa Co., AL. 7. William W. SHANNON (1840 AL - 1863 Civil War in Drew Co., AR), married Martha Jane MILLER after 1860 in Columbia Co., AR. (Martha is sister of Charlotte MILLER.) Sandy Bearden Gomer Bridger, Montana
In reply to a post from Sandy Bearden Gomer <thebear@the-bear.com> Do you have any idea what county your SHANNON's came from in South Carolina? There were several SHANNON families in South Carolina at the time of the 1790 Heads of Family census...if you can determine which one of those families your William Henry SHANNON came from it will help you a lot. Here is a link to my late husband's SHANNON family of Fairfield co., Camden dist., SC. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=donevanell&id=I39448 I am sure of the descendency information I have on John SHANNON, son of Captain Thomas SHANNON but I don't have absolute information on the other 2 brothers and their descendants and perhaps there was more sons. I do receive, but there doesn't seem to be much activity. When was the latest message sent? I certainly don't remember anything for a month or more. Would like to prove or disprove that Leona P. wife of Henry B. Shannon b. about 1861 in MS is Leona P. Henry, daughter of John Milton Henry of Oktibbeha Co., MS. Henry B. and Leona Shannon were found in the following U.S. Census Records: U.S. Census 1900 Justice Precient 1, Tarrant Co., TX Henry age 39 U.S. Census 1910 Justice Precient 7, Tarrant Co., TX - Henry age 47 U.S. Census 1920 Justice Precient 7 Tarrant Co., TX - H.B. Shanon age 59 Henry might have been married before Leona. The children from this first marriage would have been, Willie and Arquilla both born in TX. The children from the marriage of Henry B. and Leona were: Velma, Octavia, and Milton and infant. If you know of this Shannon line, I would appreciate hearing from you. Kathleen Burnett

{This came from Sandi Goren in KY. She is not a Shannon researcher. She has access to a lot of old biographies and shares them with KY researchers.} NOTE: I have no connection and am not seeking additional information. 10686 HENRY CO - ELIAS D. SHANNON - Shannon, Adams, Steel #10686: Past and Present of Saline County, Mo, William Barclay Napton, 1910. Henry Co KY. In an enumeration of the successful farmers and stockmen of Saline county the name of Elias D. Shannon should not be omitted as a glance at his splendid record will readily show, for he is not only a man of industry but also of the highest integrity. He is a native of Henry county, Kentucky, having been born there on July 24, 1848, reared on the home farm and received his education in the district schools. He is the son of Samuel and Martha (Adams) Shannon, both born in Kentucky where they were reared, educated and married and settled on a farm, remaining there until all their children were born. In 1852, having accumulated a competency, they moved to Saline county, Missouri, and rented a farm, Mr. Shannon dying here in 1854. He was a Democrat, but not an office seeker. He was a member of the Christian church, a plain, quiet honest man in whom the utmost confidence was reposed by all who knew him. His widow survived and, sometime after his death, bought a farm, and kept the family together, rearing them in credit and respectability, being a woman of rare force of character and business ability. She in time traded this place for a larger farm on which the family located and carried on general farming, and stock raising very successfully. In 1893 the son, Elias D., of this review, bought the farm which he now occupies, the family moved to this place soon afterward, Mrs. Shannon remaining on the same until her death, in January, 1902. She was a good woman, a member of the Christian church and the mother of five children, named as follows: Mary, who married Samuel Steel; John died, leaving eight children, three by his first wife and five by his second wife; David A. died, leaving a widow and one child; Elias D. of this review was next in order of birth; Lilly C., the widow of James P. Adams, is the mother of two daughters. Elias D. Shannon remained on the home farm with his brothers, assisting in the care of his mother, devoting his attention to general farming and to various kinds of stock, being very successful, finally purchasing the farm of two hundred and twenty acres, on which he has erected a commodious, modern and substantial dwelling and he has made many other important improvements about the place. He has bought all the interests of the other children in the place, now owning two excellent farms; he also has a one-half interest in another good farm. He raises, buys and feeds stock for the market each year, and he is progressive and up-to-date in his farming and stock dealing, always employing only modern methods. He is a Democrat politically, but has never held office. He is held in the highest esteem by those among whom he mingles, being a man in whom the utmost confidence may be reposed, being admired for his keen business ability, his desire to see others prosper and his strict integrity in all the walks of life. He is deserving of great credit for the abundant success which has crowed his efforts, for he has been the creator of his own fortunes. He is to be commended for sacrificing his early manhood's years to the care and pleasure of his mother, than whom a more kindly and generous-hearted woman never lived, preferring to lavish all his affection on her rather than assume the responsibilities of the married state and he is yet a bachelor. morning everyone, I have received this notice from Rootsweb, the server that sponsors our Shannon email list. Joyce, list manager +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Dear RootsWeb mailing list subscriber, We are excited to announce that in the coming weeks, the RootsWeb.com mailing lists will be moving to a new list management system. Why? The new list management system offers updated technology, better spam control, and more efficient hosting of the lists. When? All the lists won't be updated all at once. In fact, once we start it will take us about two weeks to complete the process. How will it Affect You? Your current subscription(s) will automatically transfer to the new system so there will be no need to re-subscribe to your list(s), however, because the sending and receiving of list email will be handled by a new system, you may notice a few changes to your list(s). Digest subscribers will notice a small difference in the layout, volume and issue numbers of the list digests. The "-L" is being dropped from the "official" list name. This means the "from" address your mailing list emails come from will be slightly different- ListName@rootsweb.com vs. the current ListName-L@rootsweb.com. You may have to adjust your spam filters or put the new address on your "accept" list to prevent it from being caught in your "junk" folder. This sounds like a big change, but it doesn't have to change the way you use the list. Here's why: - You will still be able to send messages to the list using the "ListName-L@rootsweb.com" email address you use today. Additionally, you can choose to drop the "-L" and send your messages to ListName@rootsweb.com. Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. - You will still be able to subscribe and unsubscribe to the mail or digest mode by sending your request to ListName-L-request@rootsweb.com or ListName-D-request@rootsweb.com as you do today. You will also be able to unsubscribe from the mail or digest mode by sending your "unsubscribe" message to LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com. The tools that list administrators use to manage their list will also be changing. If you are a list admin, you will be contacted in an additional email on Monday with more details and a link to a tutorial. We're excited about the improvements to the lists because we feel confident that they will ensure that the mailing lists continue to run smoothly for years to come. We appreciate your patience while we make this transition and hope that the RootsWeb mailing lists will continue to be a valuable tool in your genealogy research. Thanks, The Rootsweb Staff ********************************************** You received this message from RootsWeb as a one-time email notification of upcoming changes to the mailing list(s) you subscribe to.
