    1. [SHANNON] Nathaniel Shannon Kingston Ontario Update
    2. Sue Siegmund
    3. As many of you know, the Shannon Genealogy says that Nathaniel and Polly Shannon died Dec 5, 1839 when their sloop the Hiram and Mary went down between Kingston and Wolfe Island. I have done some research that has proven this information to be inaccurate. An article appeared in the Kingston Herald Nov 26, 1839 as follows: "Yesterday morning the ferry boat that plies between Kingston and Wolfe Island capsized in a squall, and the passengers and crew, 10 in number, were thrown into the water. All were rescued except Mr. and Mrs. Shannon of the island who were drowned." So the actual date of death was November 25, 1839. December 5 was the date the will was probated. Also it was the public ferry, not their private sloop, and I am told there has never been a ship registered in Canada or the US by the name of Hiram and Mary. The article goes on to state that Mrs. Shannon's body never sank but Mr. Shannon's was not immediately found. In August of 1840, a Nathaniel Shannon age 55 was buried in St. Gregory's Cathedral cemetery in Kingston. Nathaniel would have been 55 when he died. I hope this information is helpful to the descendants of Nathaniel Shannon. 3. Yes, I've been thinking about doing that for sometime. However, my Shannon line is pretty much completely documented back to 1571, so haven't had a lot of incentive to do so. 3. Actually I knew it was 1820's, so look at the dna stuff. I think it is potentially very helpful in putting groups together. The y chromosome apparently changes very slowly. It is necessary to be a male shannon as it is father's father's father etc. that it is carried. Cost is about $200. which isn't cheap but I spend more than that whenever I find sources. . . 2. Hey, Clinton Cousins! I haven't posted in awhile (no new info to share :( ) But I am still here! My line is Jackson Shannon who married Mary Jane Julien in 1853 in Vermillion County. I believe that the Jesse Shannon who married Mary Jane's sister, Elizabeth Julien, is Jackson's brother. Jackson shows up in Mercer Co., IL with Abraham and Mary Ann (Cooper) Shannon in 1860, then Jackson and family go back to Vermillion Co., by 1870. Their daughter, Emily Jane, married Jesse P. Shannon in Edgar Co., IL in 1884. Jesse was the son of Samuel and Mahala Payton Shannon. So, I am assuming a connection somehow between the lines. Anyway, I'm Cousin Lynn, also known as _Maddalena1@aol.com_ (mailto:Maddalena1@aol.com) .

    3. No, I didn't see that. The work you refer to is probably Dexal Shannon's book. He and Louise Dedman researched the line thoroughly and this was the result. It traces this line from 1571 to my Grandfather's generation. A cousin and I recently supplemented it with our side up to the present. 3. Kelly, Thanks for the reply. In my line, the names are used over and over, so the Joseph you refer to is one of these. My Gr-Gr-Gr-Grandfather Joseph was there in the 1820's. I'm glad I got my copy of the history when I did. It has really gone up in price! The Chas. Benj. I referred to is on p.1345. He was a second cousin to my Grandfather. 3. Thanks, Annette. I would think there is a connection because I run across Giles County in some of my research. I don't recognize any of the names right off, but will look back into my book! George Dallas Shannon was born in Limestone County, AL, but Buleah Shannon was born in Pulaski, Giles County, TN (just a few miles over the AL/TN line. They moved to St. Jo, Texas where Buleah married my grandfather James Edgar Harris. Her mother Josephine Vaughn Shannon is buried there, as well as several brothers and sisters. 3. Mike, I do not believe it is. CB was born in Athens, Alabama, on March 5, 1883. H moved to Hawley, TX, in 1906 and married Fannie John on Dec. 25, 1914. I have found nothing that says he was ever in Arkansas, but who knows. I sure wish I had talked more with my dad before he passed on.
