Sorry folks I did not include a date of my re Dawn Shannon so I am repeating the email. I am trying to find information on Dawn Shannon, no records found of birth, she is the daughter of John Shannon who was born on 6 September 1909 in Hawick. There is no record of John's wife. It is believed Dawn married one Mr Urquhart, date and place unknown. It is known that there were three children, Heather, Kylie and Anita, dates of birth, marriage if married, are unknown I am hoping to close off another chapter in our family tree and any information received will go close to closing it. Thanking you Andrew

I have exhausted all the avenues I know of to find any information on John Shannon, born 6 September 1909 in Hawick, Rox. The eldest son of John Shannon and Christina Morrison Nimmo. It is believed he married and had a daughter Dawn, no records found. I am looking desperately looking for any information on this family so I can hopefully close off another chapter in our family tree. Thanking you. Andrew
I have exhausted all the avenues I know of to find any information on Christina McLennan who was the eldest daughter of John Shannon and Christina Morrison Nimmo, born in Hawick, Scotland on 13 November 1911. I believe she married one Mr Jackson and there was at least one son Ronald Jackson who had three children, Daniel, Shena and Sharon. It is believed that they may have lived on the West Coast. I am desperately looking for information on this family so I can hopefully close off another chapter in our family tree. Thanking you Andrew
Hi - I am looking at a John Shannon in Nicholas Co KY who m. a Betsey ( Elizabeth?) Payton/Peyton there in 1812. He may have had a brother, Samuel, and I wonder if these were Shannon brothers who m. Peyton sisters? Does anyone know if Mahala Payton had a sister/cousin named Betsey Peyton( Elizabeth?) Would REALLY appreciate any information about Nicholas Co KY Paytons. THANKS, Marlene in California
Rita, When you are tracing a surname, such as Shannon, the surname is handed down from male to male. Only males have a Y chromozone which gets passed from fathers to sons. Their X chromozone comes from their mother. Therefore to trace the surname genetically you have to test for the Y-DNA. We women have two X chromozones and that is what makes us women. You can test DNA in women. It is called mtDNA or mitochondrial DNA. This goes from mothers to sons and daughters. But you are tracing different surnames with each generation. Hope this explanation helps. Cheryl Shannon Markiewicz

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. I don't have a Shannon male for the DNA test. I have a cousin whose mother was a Shannon but not his dad. So what can I do? I am looking for Cornelius Shannon family of Clogh, Co.Antrim in the early 1800's. Rita

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone. Rita, I did a quick rootsweb and the first entry on your Cornelius is by a Don Trent trenthistory@yahoo.com He appears to have a lot on that line. Good Luck. Hi Rita, you would have to try and locate a Shannon male in that line (if your cousin's mother had a brother who is around or had a Shannon nephew it still would work very well for comparison as the y-chromosome changes very slowly. I admit I don't have a clue where Clogh Co. Antrim is, but if they have a census, or church records of birth you can work it this way timewise. Alternatively, you could go the ysearch.org, pull up all the persons who list Shannon as surname or as in the lineage and simply e-mail them the question as to whether any have a Cornelius Shannon listed. The same question can be done on some of the other sites. Have you done a rootsweb check? They are free and often very helpful. Good luck. I am the Group Administrator for one of the SHANNON DNA groups at FTDna. Go to _www.familytreedna.com_ (http://www.familytreedna.com) for further info. A Y-DNA 12 marker test is $99. You just swab the inside of your cheek. Having the surname, Shannon and being male are the only requirements. The more Shannons who test the more matches we may find. Exciting. ysearch.org is a free site associated with family tree DNA. There are about 10 individuals who have the last name of Shannon that are posted there (their DNA results and with at least some family history) and another 10 or so that have a Shannon in their genealogy. Someone who I think shares the same ggg-gdfather but did not know about my gg-gdfather being his gg-gdfather's younger brother, has agreed to do the DNA testing. If turns out, it puts two distinct branches together which is always exciting!
