    1. RE: [SHANNON-L] Marriage date and place of Thomas & Agnes CROW Shannon

    3. Thanks everyone for all your help on the marriage date and place of Thomas & Agnes CROW Shannon. This is my work userid so am just now reading all the responses. But since we haven't found the proof I'm looking for, here is some more food for thought: Harman's 'History of the Middle New River Settlements states (and I don't have the book in front of me) that Samuel came from Amherst County, VA to settle Poplar Hill in 1774 on Walker's Creek. Thomas' brother, John, married Margaret Marrs Sept 23, 1779 and that record is found in the Montgomery County Courthouse. So is the record for their sister, Anna, who married James Marrs April 22, 1782. Don't know when their sister, Jane, married Alexander Marrs, or their brother, David married Jane McKnight. Samuel and Jean Shannon and most of the family left for Tenn in 1884. Could Thomas and Agnes been married wherever Agnes was born and reared? Maybe knowing where Agnes Crow's parents are buried might help. Maybe Thomas & Agnes were married in Poplar Hill and the minister never sent in the paperwork but was recorded in the family bible. 2. Joe & Donna Perry
    3. I finally created a website. Please take a look at the "Genealogy Report: Descendants of William Shannon." The link is below. I'm really getting pleased with what I've done; if you have any suggestions on how to improve the site, or if you have a site (I think I can put links on it), please let me know. Forward this e-mail to more "Shannon" relatives (just "cc" me at theperryfamily@prodigy.net, so I can fill out the tree even more). Oh, it should go without saying, but if there are any mistakes, please tell me. AND if you have more info, don't wait to send me reams of stuff -- a trickle at a time will do just fine. Thanks to all, Joe Perry http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/p/e/r/Joe-Perry/

    3. I have Thomas Shannon b 25 March 1753 Rockfish River Albemarle Col Va. which became Nelson Co. Nar, 20 Jan.1778 but as I rechecked realize it didn't say where they were married. The family sheet I have gives info obtained from 767 Roster of Rev. Ancestors Vol IV, R-Z Texas Soc. of DAR. Also (143) DAR#562241 Elise Brown Esposito. Sorry to be so long in answering but have a fractured finger on my right hand so have to wing it a little. Maybe this will help. Katy

    3. Mike, I don't think it is an issue of confusion. The Thomas that you refer to seems to have been unmarried. The issue is that a date and place is often cited for the marriage of Capt. Thomas Shannon and his cousin, Agnes Crow, yet so far, none of us has come up with the evidence for either the date or place. I think we have all gotten the information from Dedman's work, but don't know her evidence. 3. Russ and Mike, Thank you both ! I checked my secondaries and most of it came from Dedman. Dar "Helen Shannon Conover" only has the year of 1778 listed. Evidently they were married in Virginia as both secondaries (if correct) say Thomas was born and died in Virginia. I will check my resources and see what I can find. I am glad there are others that like to know first hand and have their work proved. Sheila

    3. I believe that the part of Giles Co. where the Shannon's settled was formed from Montgomery Co. which in turn was part of Fincastle Co. at the time of the Shannon arrival. There are some surviving records of the old Fincastle Co. in, of all places, the Draper collection of the University of Wisconsin, Madison. 3. Sheila, The location may be correct, but Giles County was not formed until 1806. If Widget keeps asking the question, perhaps someone will come up with the proof. 3. Widget, Keep asking for proof. That's what good research is all about. The Rockfish River area would have been in Amherst Co. in 1778, but there is no record of this marriage among the marriage bonds of that county.
