I am looking for ancestors and family of Francis Shannon of Pennsylvania and Nancy Jane Allen of Fayette County, OH. Francis was born about 1816 and Nancy was born about 1818. They married 1/15/1839. Children were: Loucetta (b. 1839), Arvilla (b. 1840 Burlington, IA), Francis Freemont (b. 1848, Columbus Grove, Putnam County, OH, d. 1926 in WA), Alice Ann (m. John Wesley Searfoss), James S., Robert Thrift (b. 1859, Vaughnsville, Putnam County, OH, d. 1920 in NB). Francis Freemont got his middle name because his father was on the Freemont Expedition (Oregon, California) when he was born. I would appreciate any information you can supply. Thank you, Jessie.

Hi Janice, My SHANNONs also have a link to Workington. Isabella SHANNON was married at St. Michael's Parish Church, Workington to Jonas WELLS in 1874 (Jonas was born in Bradford, Yorkshire). Their first child, Charles, was born in Scotland in 1875, but my grandfather, Robert Shannon WELLS was born in Cockermouth in 1876(he was baptised at St. Michael's). I also found another marriage in St. Michael's for an Elizabeth SHANNON (whose father was Robert SHANNON, occupation: baker). I am not sure if this is Isabella's sister. Hi Listers, I am interested in tracing my Great Grandmother, Isabella SHANNON. According to the 1881 and 1891 Census returns she was born in Dumfriesshire in 1849/1850. Her Marriage Certificate (married Jonas WELLS in 1874) shows her Father as Robert SHANNON (Occupation: Baker). As she was married in England (Workington, Cumberland), her Mother's name was not listed. Her Death Certificate lists her mother's maiden as Isabella PEACOCK. My problem is, that the only birth entry that comes close is for an Isabella SHENNAN born 1849 in Kirkbean and lists her Father's (Robert) occupation as a ploughman. Her mother's name is listed as Isabella DUNCAN. I believe there is a possiblity that my SHANNON family may have been non-conformist (possibly belonging to the Episcopal Church). Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks & Regards, David Wells Sydney, Australia ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello David My name is Janice from Canada. My Shannan/Shannon line is originally from the Dumfries area and after searching for a year in Dumfries for this line a Carlisle list member found them for me in Workington in 1881/ 1891 cencus. My grandmother who is still with me was born in Carlisle, England. Her mother was Sarah Shannan but died when when grandmother was only 10. She has vague childhood memories of visiting Dumfries with her mother to visit some of the Shannan/Shannon line. I put both variations of the name as in my search I have found it spelt both ways. On my g.grandmother's marraige certificate it is spelt with a 'an'. On the census it has 'an' in 1881 and 'on' in 1891. 1891 census for Carlisle, Cumberland (Fiche no 45, row G , no 5.) 27 Northumberland St, Caldewgate James SHANNON, age 37, traveller, born: Dornock, Scotland Janet, wife, 33, born: Middlebie, Scotland George, son, 13, scholar, b: Carlisle Walter , son, 11, scholar, Workington Mary, dau, 9, scholar, b: Carlisle SARAH. E. - dau, 7, scholar, b: Carlisle Joseph, son, 5, scholar, b: Carlisle James, son, 1, - , b: Carlisle 1881 census for Workington, Cumberland 5 Whitfield Street Workington Cumberland pro ref RG11, piece 5178, page 40 John SHANNAN, head, 27, married, b: Scotland Jannet SHANNAN, wife, 22, Scotland George SHANNAN, son, 2, Workington Walter E SHANNAN, son, 5mths, Workington I have not confirmed anything else about this family. There is a James Shennan born 1856 in Kirkbean to a Robert shennan and Isabella Duncan but I don't think this is Dumfries??? I don't know Scotland to well. Maybe there is a match somewhere. I was going to start investigating again now that the summer is over and my children are back in school but I just lost a stepsister in the last week and now my other grandmother has fallen ill. Katy, I saw your note on the surname list. I don't know how much you have, but the Samuel Shannon you refer to is likely is a brother of my Gr-Gr-Gr Grandfather Joseph Shannon. He is a grandson of Thomas and Eigness and a son of Samuel and Jean Reid Shannon. It goes like this: John>John Jr>Robt>Thomas m Eigness> Samuel m Jean Reid>Samuel m Catherine Motheral. They settled in Ittawamba Co., Miss., the town of Shannon near Tupelo was laid out on his farm. My line is Samuel m Jean Reid>Joseph>Granville>Col. Alexander>James Alfred>James Alfred Jr> Michael. Michael Shannon
Hi Michael: I received your note re Samuel and Catherine Motheral. I did not remember that the town of Shannon was on a part of their land. I hae so much info and forget some of it. Thanks. Katy
So, who are your Mississippi Shannons? I had a Samuel Shannon b 9 July 1780, d 6 Jan.1851 and buried in the Shannon, Ms. Cemetery. Did Samuel start this cemetery or do you know who did? Thank you. Katy

I used this years ago to find additional info on my Mississippi SHANNONs. It is an excellent site to view records of the Biographical Index held in the Mississippi Archives. MDAH: Archives and Library: Search Room: Biographical Index

Dear Rhonda and others: The cleaner I used to clear the black stuff off several headstones, including limestone, marble and granite is called, "CRUD CUTTER" manufactured by Supreme Chemicals Inc. of Atlanta, Georgia (800) 466-7126. They should be able to tell you what retailers in your area sell it. Again, good luck and best wishes for success! Katy, One thing we all have to watch out for; they ALL use the same set of first names. The only way to keep them sorted out is to have first names and vital statistics for each one. Capt. Thomas who married Anna Crow was Samuel & Jean's oldest and remained at "Poplar Hill" when the rest went on into Tenn. Thomas and Anna had; Ann,Samuel,Wm.,John,Jane,Hanna and Thomas Jr. who married Juliet Allen. Their descendants are still in Poplar Hill. As to Samuel & Jean's son Samuel, he married Catherine Motheral. Just for the fun of it, in your top window type in google. When it gives you a window, type in Joseph Shannon, and click on "I feel luckey" This should give you the whole line from John to the present generations. Mike
Mike, this Samuel that was in Mississippi would have been a cousin. I have Samuel and Jean Reid, then Capt. Thomas and Agnes Crow, Samuel Shannon and Eliz. Brown etc. Samuel and Jean Reid had a son Samuel that did go to Mississippi. I think I am right on this but could be wrong. Keep in touch. Katy
Katy, I guess your Samuel Shannon would be Samuel son of Samuel and Jean Reid Shannon. He laid out the town of Shannon on his farm. Have you looked at the Dedman Letters? They are full of info on these Shannons. Mike Shannon
