    1. [SHANNON-L] Nash Shannon?
    2. Mark Long
    3. Hi All, I'm searching for my GG Grandfather, whom I believe was Nash Shannon. I'm beginning to suspect the first name may not be accurate. I know that Nash had a son to Mary Ann Stewart (1848 -1900) in Pennsylvania, in 1879. Their son was Harvey Clay Shannon (Feb 2, 1879 - April 29, 1965). Harvey lived in Indiana, PA with his wife, Bertha Mae Hawkins (27 August 1886 - 8 July 1922). Harvey and Birtha had four children, Beulah Mae (my Grandmother), Elizabeth Emmaline, Howard Thomas, and Robert Clay. Does any of this look familiar to anyone? Thanks much -Mark mtl@catsupgraphics.com

One son (there is at least one other) was born James Luther Shannon 5/21/1875 in Joplin, Newton County, Missouri. I believe they moved to the Denton County, Texas area when James was about 5. I don't have much other information. My mom says her dad (James) would not go to church because he told her he was forced to go every time the doors were open and she is under the impression his father (William Hugh) was an extremely religious man. My mom also remembers her dad telling her that he was taken out of school when he was about 5-6 because his dad needed him to help work on the farm. I did find out that James had a brother, Everett Shannon that was born abt 1879 but where is unknown. I know he lived as an adult in the Abilene, Texas area but died many years ago. I tried sending mail to names similar and got a reply back from a lady who stated that Everett's widow had sold their business and left town to live with one of her children, but she did not where. I can't seem to find information anywhere. I know James spent most of his young adult to the end of his life in Oklahoma and Texas. He married first a woman that died in childbirth and my mom remembers him carrying the woman's clothes with him in a trunk and he was deeply sentimental about her until the day he died. He also was rumored to have had in his trunk papers from the Oklahoma Land Rush about 1895 that he told her he was part of. He was married to Hester Jane Burrow (1885-1972) and they had many children. He was married last to my grandmother, Ruth Seber. This is my mother's dad and she knows very little about him. He was over 60 when she was born and then her parents divorced. I did manage to reach some of the step siblings this last summer and found lots of new relatives but no one knows anything about James except his date of birth and that his father was William and his mother Amanda. Amanda's place of birth is unknown. Place of marriage is unknown. It also does not look like James Luther ever had a birth certificate issued. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ==== SHANNON Mailing List ==== SHANNON letters by Dedman on: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~shannonfamilies

    3. As I haven't posted this in a while, I think I will try again! My William Shannon, with his wife Katherine Shannon, recorded a deed for 395 A of land on Turkey Creek in Greenbrier County in 1787. The farm lay between Turkey Creek and Dropping Lick Creek about five miles south of the present town of Union in what is now Monroe County, West Virginia. They were there at the time of the 1783 Census. In 1794 they sold 195 A to Sarah Henderson. The next year they sold the rest, 200A, to Walter Neal, and moved to Tenn. They lived on the Clinch River, eighteen miles from Knoxville. Children of WILLIAM SHANNON and CATHERINE are: i. CHARLES4 SHANNON, b. ,,VA; d. June 08, 1852, ,,IL; m. (1) PRUDENCE SCARBOROUGH; d. 1806; m. (2) AGNES DUNCAN. (Cousin of 1st wife.) ii. HENRY SHANNON. iii. WILLIAM SHANNON, b. ,,VA. iv. JOHN SHANNON. v. JAMES SHANNON, b. ,,VA. vi. 1. [SHANNON-L] Isaac Shannon PA/OH 1768
    2. Jim Adkins
    3. My GGGG Grandfather was Isaac Shannon b abt 1770, m Jane Porter. I am in possession of a book the details some facts of his life. In addition I also have his will. If you are a cousin, email me and I will send it to you. Goodnews@inebraska.com SHANNON Contrary to popular opinion this name does not derive from, the River Shannon. In Fact, the name has an english origin meaning the canon from the Middle English chanon. In Chaucer’s "Canterbury Tales there is mention of "Monk or frere Preest or Chanon." 'The canon-house near Ulverston, England, once attached to Conishead Priory, is now a farm stead called Shannon-House but styled Chanon-House in the church registers of the 18th century. The first of this name in our records is Isaac Shannon who was born about 1771 in Pennsylvania, perhaps in Cumberland County. He was married 1 February 1791 in the Big Spring Presbyterian Church in Cumberland County to Jane Porter, and both of them were received into the membership of that congregation in June 1791. Shortly after that time they must have moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania. It is known that Isaac had a mill on Shannon’s Creek in Washington County and that it was washed away in 1792. However, on 4 February 1793 he is still listed on the rolls of the 6th Battalion of Cumberland County Militia. On 10 January 1794 Isaac bought 213 acres 110 perches of land on Cross Creek in Washington County for 163 pounds 17 shillings from Isaac Starrett. This land was part of a patent originally held by Sarah Martin and bordered on the West Virginia line. Isaac Shannon is listed among those who took the oath of allegiance during the Whiskey Rebellion on 11 September 1794. The 1803 census for Washington County, Pennsylvania, lists the following in the residence of Isaac Shannon: 4 males under 10, 2 males 26 to 45, 1 female under 10, and 1 female 26 to 45. The same year he is listed on the tax list for Cross Creek township. On 15 April 1805 Isaac sold all the land he purchased in 1794 for $7 per acre. Two years later, on 5 March 1807, he purchased 177 acres for $40O in Jefferson County, Ohio, from Galbreath Stuart. On 4 February 1808 he sold 15 acres off this tract for $45. This land was in Short Creek Township. Isaac and Jane Shannon sold 161 acres of their land on 10 February 1813 for $1,250, and on 5 June 1813 the remaining 132 perches were sold for $6. 60 to John Caldwell. On June 1815 Isaac and Jane Shannon were admitted to the Beech Springs Presbyterian Church, Harrison County, Ohio, on certificate. The records of this church contain several references to him and his family from this time on. A few of these follow. 1815-1816 baptisms: Isaac Shannon - 3. May 1822 Isaac Shannon was restored to communion. September 1822 Isaac Shannon was suspended for drunkedness. 1830-1831 baptisms: Isaac Shannon Jun. (Jr?) 2. Jane Porter Sharnnon died 18 June 1820 in Jefferson County, Ohio, and was buried at the Beech Spring Church. The 1820 census for Jefferson County lists Isaac Shannon with 1 male under lO, 3 males 16-25, 1 male 46 or older, 1 female under 1O, and 1 female 10-15. On 27 September 1821 in Harrison County, Ohio, Isaac married Isabella Hagerty who is listed as one of the early settlers in that county. It is not known whether she died or they were divorced, but apparently there were no children by this marriage. On 12 January 1826 in Harrison County, Ohio, there is a marriage recorded for Isaac Shannon to Sarah Stone. However, this Isaac could be the son of Issaac. There is no further information available on this marriage. Isaac did marry again, however, on 30 June 1837 in Harrison County, Ohio, to Rachel Reed. According to his will she bore him a son and apparently died sometime before 1845 when he wrote his will. The 1840 census for Harrison County, Ohio, shows the following listing for the residence of Isaac Shannon: 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-3O, 1 male 70-80, and 1 female 40-50. Isaac Shannon died 20 September 1848 and is buried at Beech Spring Church beside his first wife Jane Porter. By reconstructing the various census enumerations it appears that Isaac Shannon may have been the father of as many as eleven children. Only the names of five are known however: 1. Mary 5hannon, born about 1798 in Pennsylvania; married (1) 20 April 1820 in Jefferson County, Ohio to Samuel Reed and (2) 17 November 1836 in Harrison County, Ohio, to Andrew Clark; died 5 April 1878 in Page County, Iowa. 2. John Shannon- baptized 5 June 1800 in Cross Creek Presbyterian Church, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He may have married 3 July 1828 in Jefferson County, Ohio to Jane Johnson. 3. Robert Shannon baptized September 1802 at Cross Creek Presbyterian Church, Washington County, Pennsylvania. 4. Isaac Shannon baptized 14 April 1805 Cross Creek Presbyterian Church, Washington County, Pennsylvania. He may have married 12 January 1826 in Harrison County, Ohio, to Sarah Stone. 5. Leslie Shannon, born about 1838-184O. He is mentioned in his fathers will as being the son of Rachel.

    2. James Shannon born 1780 to 85, married to Mary Shannon of COunty Antrim. Children included Robert--9-9-1807, Co Antrim and an Archibald and Glasgow. Other children's names not known. Robert and wife Rose moved from Co Antrim with about 12 children in 1849. They lived and farmed near LArne, just north of Belfast. THey lived near Hamilton, Ontario, Canada until the early 1850's when they moved to the Sterling, Ill, USA area where they lived until their deaths. I am a descendant of their son THomas YOung Shannon. A researcher in Northern Ireland reported a suggestion that JAmes had come from Scotland. This is part of the family oral history as well. Given their religion--Scothch Pres--this seems likely. I have no further info on James. I do, however, have the descendants of Robert Shannon fairly well in hand. I have also had contact with descendants of the brother--Archibald or Glasgow--who stayed in the Hamilton area. Some still live there. While I have yet to make that journey or the one to Ireland. Relatives have and descednats of James were in the area until the early to mid 1900s. The last Shannon's disappeared--marrying into the Boyds. SOme may have emigrated to New Zealand. Well, I hope this connects. I, too, hope to find more and possibly earlier connections. Take care, Ed Shannon

Please email me with details of your James Shannon and anyone between him and 1800's. I have lots of info after that. My dad was told they came originally from Scotland to Ireland in the early 1700's so maybe we can help each other. I am so excited that there may be a possiblity that we have some info to share. 3. Since your Shannon family is in the area, I suggest you look in the Corry, Pennsylvania area. That's Erie County right next to Crawford County, Pennsylvania AND Chautauqua County, New York. I know there were Shannons there. My father's name was Robert Shannon. When I was a baby we lived in a duplex house in Corry, Pennsylvania. The other half of the house was rented by another Robert Shannon family (no relation). The mailman was so confused he just tossed the mail on the porch and let us figure it out from there. That would have been in the 1940's. My Shannon family came from the Pittsburgh area and only lived in Corry a short time. But I believe the other Robert Shannon family had lived there for quite some time. Could be a link to the family you are looking for. Good Luck.
