    1. [SHANNON-L] Search for William Hugh Shannon
    2. Pamela Smith
    3. I am trying to find information on William Hugh Shannon born about 1829 in Arkansas. The 1850 census for Newton County, Missouri shows him age 21 and living with a family "Kearney?" with the head of household a woman named Catherine. The census also lists Elizabeth and George as Shannon's and as Kearney's so it could be there really were 2 Elizabeth's and 2 Georges. He does not show up on the 1840 census. He lists his father and mother as both born in Kentucky. William Hugh and Amanda Holmes married 2/24/1874 in Newton County, Missouri. I have not been able to find any records of him from 1850 again until 1880 when he shows up on the 1880 census for Arrant County, Texas. On this census it shows he is married with 6 children. Amanda Holmes is his wife and it seems like she is a second wife. There are three children before their marriage: Nancy VS., Mary Eliza, and William HE. Then there are three after their marriage: James I, Arthur, and Evart. This is my great grandfather and I would really love to get any information.

The reason I put out this query is because family stories state that our John Shannon was the first cousin of George and all the rest of that family, as our John's father was the brother of George d. 1803 Belmont Co. Hope I am making that plain and not confusing. Now all that I have ever read about George d. 1803 is that he was an orphan whose mother died on board ship from Ireland and that his father left him in the care of others while the father went back to Ireland and that ship was lost at sea. No where have I ever found a mention of a sibling for George d. 1803. It is such a prominent family that some members surely have done an extensive search. Do you know the origin of George d.. 1803 - and if he had at least one brother? I would be interested in how you are connected. I found a person - Ruth Monroe Story - who was a great grand daughter of George who went on the L & C. She donated an item belonging to that George to the Oregon History Center in Portland, Oregon. I recently obtained a picture of it. I live just south of San Francisco and am originally from Portland - I plan on dropping by the History Center in a few weeks on a trip north to Portland. If you are indeed a descendant of George of the L & C, I have also recently obtained 2 articles about him from a Ranger who did research for me at the L & C Interpretative Center in Great Falls, Montana. I will anxious to hear from you and thanks for responding! Marlene Marlene DiGiovanni MarleneDiGi@prodigy.net

    3. Mike- I believe the brothers Samuel and Capt. Wm. Shannon (sons of John Shannon and Sarah Reid) served under George Rogers Clark, not the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Both died in Shelby Co. KY, Samuel on 15 May 1813 and Capt. Wm. 5 July 1794. I have a book on this. I also have Shannon's in my family, going back into the 1700's. Dorothy (Kennelly) Cote ........from Erie, PA. USA.

    3. Is anyone out there related to or know about the ancestors of my SHANNONS who came to the Kingston, Ontario, area from Ireland in 1820? William Shannon was born Jan. 17, 1817 and died in Canada Nov. 14, 1901. He married Ellenor McNeely Apr. 5, 1842. His father was Robert whose first wife was ? Aldridge and 2nd wife Margaret Bates. They were Wesleyan Methodists. One source (1901 census for Frontenac County, Ontario) says this family came from County Down but others say County Cork. I've been stuck at this point for a long time. Sincerely, Esther Crebbin Mitchell Victoria, Canada
