    1. Re: [SHANNON-L] shannon family
    2. Hi Michael, Welcome to SHANNON-LAND, and congratulations on your retirement. My gggg.grandfather, John Shannon I, b. 1754/5 in Wash.Co. Md., an Am. Rev. Veteran. His father (John?) drowned in a stream of water, probably the Potomac. Either he or his father came from Kintyre, Arygyle,Scotland. John I, married Jane Dunlap, and they settled in Mercersburg, Pa. & raised 10 children. Later they went to Centre Co.Pa. and after the children were all out on their own, went to live on the farm in Rockland Twp. Venango Co. Pa. with their son John II, who had served in the war of 1812, & his wife. John & Jane had a son, Alexander, who had a farm next door. It is through John & Jane's daughter Jane that m. Daniel Kennelly, that I'm related; for Daniel & Jane are my ggg. grandparents, and I carry the Kennelly surname. I'm sure this is all confusing, but just in case any of the names ring a bell......Have fun on your computer. Most of the time, stay away from some of the chat rooms. Of course, some are good, but there are those that presume too much. You'll learn to do alot of weeding out and deleting. Happy hunting and best wishes. Dottie

    1. [SHANNON-L] Rev Samuel Shannon Ralston
    2. I am not sure if this made it to the list or not, so if it did, please forgive the double post. Joyce Subj: {not a subscriber} Rev. Samuel Shannon Ralston Date: 10/26/1999 From: [email protected] (Russell M. Reid) To: [email protected], [email protected] Shannon and Reid Researchers, I have been working on the family of Rev. Samuel Shannon Ralston, who, beginning in 1843 was the first pastor to the Mt. Zion Associate Reformed Presbyterian Congregation in Lincoln Co. MO. Many of the members of the congregation were his cousins. He was born in the vicinity of Nashville, TN 11 May 1809 to James Reid Ralston and Esther Shannon. In his own autobiography he identified his mother's parents as Samuel Shannon and Jean Reid. They are easily identified respectively as the son of Thomas Shannon and wife Agnes of Lancaster Co. PA, and the daughter of John Reid and wife Jean of the same county. Rev. Ralston identified his paternal grandparents as David Ralston and Mary Reid. It is know from the 1752 will of John Reid of Lancaster Co. PA that, in addition to the daughter Jean Reid (Mrs. Samuel Shannon) he had a daughter Mary Reid. It is my suspicion, though I have never found any confirmation, that Mary Reid, the daughter of John Reid and Jean, is the same as Mary Reid, the wife of David Ralston. This would make the two grandmothers of Rev. S. S. Ralston sisters. Does anyone researching these families know of confirming or contradictory information? Russell Reid <mailto:[email protected]> or <mailto:[email protected]> Louisville, KY

    3. Hi All, I just visited www.ancestry.com today. Look on the the right side of their home page. There is a (temporary) free database online that other Ireland researchers may be interested in. I "copy & pasted" the database description below: Good luck to all, Mary (Mullarkey) Wentzell Chicago USA ************************************************** SEARCH IRISH RECORDS INDEX 1500-1920 Description of online database: After the fire at the Dublin Record Office in 1922, the government appealed for Irish residents to donate any copies of records they possessed. This appeal yielded a large and widely varied collection of information that the Family History Library in Salt Lake City microfilmed in the 1960's. This database is an index to these records now in possession of the Library. Each entry reveals the person's name, date of record, and residence in Ireland. More importantly, the microfilm, box, and item numbers are provided to aid the researcher in obtaining a copy of the original record. These records include histories, pedigrees, parish registers, probates, and orphan's court records. For those seeking Irish ancestors, this index can be a tremendous aid. Extended Description: The records in this database can be found at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Films: 101011-25, 257841-3, 496361-95, 579477-8, 581925-33, 592932-44, 592952-4, 593622-49, 593653-8, 595358-70, 595937-8, and 823473-5. Bibliography: J and J Limited Company. He mentioned that he had relatives, which would be mine also, in the San Francisco area. He said they owned a construction company. Can anyone relate to this. They're name is probably Shanahan, so he thinks. (My g-grandfather changed his name to Shannon when he came to America in the 1860s). I would love to have this be a find.
