Thanks, that was what I was looking for. When I'm head buried in books at the Library or Nat'l Archives, I have a small package of essential tools that I carry with me...that was one. I must have left it behind. Hope someone else found it useful. Linda: Have you received an answer on the Calculation of birthdates as yet? If not, here it is: 8870 FORMULA Using the 8870 Formula to ascertain a birth date can be a tremendous help to the genealogist when checking tombstone or death record dates. If a tombstone or death record shows that a person died May 6, 1889 and was 71 years, 7 months, and 9 days old, but no date of birth is listed, in order to correctly arrive at the birth date one has only to use the 8870 formula to quickly get the date of birth rather than taking time to count backwards. 18890506 (died 1889 May 6) Subtract 710709 (71 years 7 months 9 days) ________ 18179797 Subtract 8870 (constant) ________ 18170927 (born 1817 Sep 27) I have this formula in my files and I wish to give credit to the source as follows: (from Georgia LYONS from her copy of The Saginaw Gen. Soc., Inc., reprinted in the Questing Heirs, Vol. 23, Betty J. Mason) Sincerely, Bonnie Huser, A Shannon ---------- > From: Stanly or Linda Widau <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Subject: [SHANNON-L] Calculation > Date: Sunday, November 28, 1999 10:58 AM > > Does anyone have the special formula for finding out the birth date given at time of death, year, month, and day. Hello List, I feel sure that my Shannon line used alcohol, and I know the Staten line that married into the Shannons abused it. My daddy was a chronic alcoholic, his dad made the stuff and bootlegged it. Of course back in those days one was not called an alcoholic, they were called "Ole Drunks" Just my 2 cents worth--Helen -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Thursday, December 02, 1999 7:56 AM Subject: [SHANNON-L] Re: SHANNONs & alcohol >Hi Leslie, >Were you on this list a year.....maybe 2 years ago when we discussed the >tendancy of many of the SHANNON line towards alcoholism? Hi Leslie, Were you on this list a year.....maybe 2 years ago when we discussed the tendancy of many of the SHANNON line towards alcoholism? I think I began by informing the list that I began my interest in genealogy as a child because all the other kids called their grandfather Grampa, Gramps, Granddaddy, or something. Whereas I had to call mine MR. SHANNON. Strange for a child to understand. My grandfather was an abusive alcoholic and when my father & his brother were old enough to take care of themselves, my grandmother divorced him. Will cut this short, but we kids of my father were never allowed to call him anything but Mr. and when I began research as a young woman, my dad never wanted to hear anything about his father, but was very interested in his grandfather & further back. I think all of us on this list were extremely surprised to find this trait of alcohol dependency running thru our SHANNON line. Even lines that are not connected. Someday, maybe one of us will do some research on this, might prove most interesting & a health benefit to our future generations. Joyce p.s. have you checked our archives to see if your H.E. has been mentioned before?
Looking for any Shannon's born or living in Zanesville, Ohio in the 1880's. My grandmother, Mabel Shannon, was born in 1889 in Zanesville. Her mother supported her by giving piano lessons and running a boarding house. The father was missing, apparently a drunk and womanizer. Only name I have for him is H.E. Shannon? not sure if this H. E. is real or not? >From Leslie in Denver Colorado
