Since many of the SHANNON families were in Tennessee, thought this might be helpful to some. Alongside the library catalog and many helpful guides to resources held at the Archives, there are also several indexes available for searching online: ~ Letters of the Tennessee Governors ~ Acts of Tennessee 1796 - 1850 : Index to Names ~ Inmates of the Tennessee State Penitentiary 1831 - 1850 ~ Southern Claims Commission (disallowed and barred claim files) ~ Index to Tennessee Death Records 1908-1912 ~ Partial Index to Tennessee Death Records 1914-1925 Add to this the Tennessee Place Names and Post Offices (1832 to 1971), numerous bibliographies, images, and information for finding county and local records, and you have a very valuable Web site.

Joyce, The tips on the Irish newspaper & the newspaper archives was interesting, and might be useful! Thanks. Mike

While playing around this rainy afternoon, I found a newspaper from Belfast that has a family roots column. And you can post your info on it as well as search. I didn't do a SHANNON/SHANAHAN search because I am sure there are countless, but if yours came from Ireland, might just be worth a post. Does anyone on this list know the dates and the ships that brought the Shannons to US-_Thanks Helen
Hi, Charlotte. I don't know the answer to that, about a William Shannon, but we had a Shannon descendent named RAYMOND Peter Neusel, whose mother was Maggie Shannon and whose dad was Alexander Neusel. Now Raymond's GRANDPARENTS were Peter Shannon and Mary( whose LAST name we don't know.) I wonder how they got that Raymond name for him. Somehow they were related to the Doran family of St. Louis. In fact, there is a Julia Shannon in a Doran grave. I can't find that connection. Peter Shannon, who had a son named Peter Shannon, died in 1894 and Peter jr, his only son died in 1905, unmarried and without issue, as they say, so my Shannon line came to a screeching halt. The Peter Shannons attended St. Lawrence O'Toole parish in St. Louis, which has awful and incomplete records on film at the library. They lived on Biddle street. Peter Shannon was a baker, and his son was a bartender. Before the Shannons came to St. Louis, they lived in Cincinatti. There was also some kind of a link to New Castle Delaware and to Kansas City, which were named in obituaries. Does any of this sound familiar??? Sincerely, Alex in Missouri ---------- >From: Charlotte Wilson <[email protected]> >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [SHANNON-L] Shannons on the ship Columbus arr. 1849 >Date: 8, Dec 1999, 2:45 PM > >Alex > >Any possibility of a male descendant named William who married an Annie >BURNS? >From Ancestry free database: I see 53 hits for SHANNON & 9 hits for SHANAHAN....... http://www.ancestry.com/ancestry/search/3795.htm RECORDS OF IMMIGRANTS TO CANADA, PART ONE (Update) Historically, Canada has been the destination for millions of immigrants from around the world seeking a better life in North America. Compiled from a variety of sources, this database is a collection of over 120,000 records between 1780 and 1906 relating to immigrants to Canada. This update adds the names of over 45,000 persons. Researchers will find the name of the immigrant and year and source of the original record. The entries in this database are not complete transcriptions of the original records; an e-mail link is provided at the bottom of each results page for those who would like to purchase a more detailed electronic transcript for a particular entry. This database can be immensely helpful for researchers with Canadian ancestors.
I went to the website to check the URL, but did not have time to run a search for SHANNON or SHANAHAN, but should be plenty. Joyce Brooklyn Naturalizations The Jewish Genealogical Society, located in New York City, is in the midst of a vast project to compile an index to naturalization records in Kings County (the home of Brooklyn). Eventually this valuable database will include over a quarter of a million names of immigrants who applied for U.S. citizenship in Kings County between 1907 and 1924. To date the project is about a quarter of the way to the finish line, with over 65,000 entries. Searching the index involves typing in a surname, a surname and the first letter of the given name, or even the soundex code of the surname you're interested in (a useful facility, especially if the surname is often misspelled). Index entries give the full name of the individual, the soundex code for his or her surname, the date of the action, and volume and page number references for declarations of intent or petitions for naturalization. While the documents themselves are not online, they are easily ordered from the office of the Kings County Clerk, or they can be examined in person if you happen to find yourself in Brooklyn. As you would expect, contact information is online to help you request copies of any documents you find reference to in the index. And if you're not quite sure what the naturalization process involved or what type of data you might find in the naturalization documents, the Jewish Genealogical Society has produced an excellent series of Questions and Answers (the ubiquitous Internet FAQ) to clue you in on the process.<A HREF="http://www.jgsny.org/kingsintro2.htm"> kingsintro</A> or http://www.jgsny.org/kingsintro2.htm
