    1. [SHANNON-L] George A. Shannon (Tarrant) (Federen) (kmo)
    2. Hello, I am seeking any information anyone can help me with, regarding a GEORGE A. SHANNON, born 1917-18 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. He was last known to be living in Detroit, Michigan in 1961 at 8468 Vaughn Street,(Detroit 28). This George was the son of Robert Shannon (I believe) and the Grandson of George A. Shannon and Isabella McDonald of Chippewa Falls, WI. Young George had a sister named ANNABELLE SHANNON born 1915, and his mother was named JESSE SHANNON, born about 1895 in Minnesota. George and all of his family were devout Catholic so they may have attended a church in that area. I have inluded his cousin's names of Fabiola and Cecile TARRANT and and uncle named Philip Federen, possibly of Minnesota. In the obituary of George's grandfather who passed away in 1944, there ws a mention of three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. I'm hoping the great-grandchildren who might be in their 50s-60s, are still in the area. ANY information will be 100% more than I have right now. My grandfather Wilfred G. Shannon was an uncle to this George Shannon. Please send any information you have no matter how small! Sincerely, Kevin O'Brien Laguna Hills, CA RESEARCHING: Shannon, Perkins, Warner, Lowe, Gauley and Dorchester.

    1. [SHANNON-L] Locating Jewish Funeral Homes
    2. Info from a newsletter I receive: Locating Jewish Funeral Homes Family historians have often found that funeral homes maintain records of those whose burial services they have handled. In some cases these records have been maintained in the family for generations, and if the current funeral director is approached politely with the explanation that you are trying to search for your ancestry, he or she will usually be helpful. The task can be made a little easier if you have some prior assurance that the funeral home you contact is the one used for your ancestor's funeral, such as being mentioned in an obituary. Or being a funeral home that specifically caters to the needs of the community your ancestor belonged to. A good example are funeral homes serving Jewish communities. If you're Jewish, you probably already know of such businesses in your area. Now you can access an online directory of Jewish funeral homes in the United States. The website of the Jewish Funeral Directors of America contains more than just a listing of the addresses and phone numbers of Jewish funeral homes. There is also a listing of current and past officers, a calendar conversion program, and short information on several pamphlets designed to help those who are planning a funeral or who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This website can be invaluable for those who are seeking assistance from Jewish funeral directors as they seek to reconstruct the history of their families. 2. Beverly Walker
    3. Well, I always hold my breath and once in a while, it works! But I don't think so this time. I'll admit I don't know anything about my James Shannon except for what I posted. I have seen the 1850 Tippah County Census and there appear to be a number of Shannon brothers who were all born in Tennessee who were all in Tippah Co (later merged into Union Co) in 1850. I was in New Albany, MS over the Labor Day holiday and met with a direct descendant of one of these (I'm guessing) brothers (it was his grandfather!), but he knew nothing about any other Shannon boys. Then he pulled out a book compiled by the county that gave selected family's histories and whoever wrote the article wrote that 5 Shannon brothers came to MS from TN, and that one, Crocket, went further south into MS. This would jibe with the info on the Federal Census, but who knows. We have seen, in some writings that James' name was James Leander and some wrote James Leander Crocket, but his headstone in Liberty Cemetary just says James L. Shannon. James Shannon married my great, great-grandmother, Mary Jane Boswell, and their oldest daughter was Cynthia Shannon. Cynthia married an Inmon and they left MS for TX in 1892 or thereabouts. Mary Jane Boswell, at some point, came to TX, as she is buried alongside Cynthia in a little cemetery outside of Aquila, TX. Why and when she left James there in MS and came to TX, we can only guess. If there are any clues here for you, I hope they are good ones. Thanks so very much for replying so quickly. I am fairly new at this, but it surely gets exciting, doesn't it?

    1. [SHANNON-L] Re: Search for James L. Shannon
    2. Hi Beverly, I am gonna hold my breath while I answer this......I have a James L. SHANNON, youngest son of James & Margaret GRIMLIER SHANNON. I show this son born in 1832, but in Copiah County MS. I also show 2 possible (but not proven) marriages for this James: to a Flementine (unknown maiden name) somewhere in KY, and also marr a Martha Jane HARRIS 7 Apr 1853. I know that James & Margaret's youngest son was James L. because of her bounty land application naming all their children, plus other court records. What you think? I only know of 1 other person researching this family of James & Margaret. I descend from the 4th child of James & Margaret, Benjamin Franklin. Joyce

    2. H'lo All, What is this about a roll call? Boy, I sure get tired of the Shannon's proclivity for using the same names OVER and OVER again & again. My Alexander Shannon was born in Kentucky on 9 March 1813. He married 1st Perniza Oliver, 2nd Sarah Crutchfield. This is not the one you're looking for, but it is one you'll probably come across. He is the son of Joseph Shannon and Mary Billingsly, and brother to Granville Billingsly. Mike Shannon

    3. Carolyn, If the list is starting a Roll Call, I would like to submit the elusive ancestors of mine. For nearly 30 years I have known where they came from and went, but not how they arrived where they were! Alexander Shannon born in Kentucky about 1797 to 1799 married Clarissa Curtner (Keutner) in Kentucky (near Danville in 1827). By 1832 they were in Indiana, possibly Rush County, by 1836 in Knox County, Indiana, and by 1847 in what became Richland County, Wisconsin. They died in Richland County, Clarissa in 1882 and Alex in 1886. They had 10 children, 6 of whom left descendants. I have much on the descendants, but nothing on the ancestors of either. Any clues? Will share what I have. Thanks and Happy Holidays. New Computer users welcome! Becky Mathews Nix

    2. Hi Kelly, you must have picked this post up in the archives, or reading your mail since the post. It was rude and this person is no longer on our list. I encourage family info as sometimes this is the only way a clue is given that one might connect to another family. I do think it is important that the subject line be accurate so folks not wanting to read about Aunt Tillie, or my Benjamin, can delete the post. Also, many folks get lots of email & don't have the time to read it all and your post may get deleted if you don't correct the subject line to change the subject to your family. One more thing I would like to remind everyone of........every year at this time, lots of folks get new computers under their trees, join lists, and begin their genealogy search online. They are what we smilingly call "newbies". Most time newbies just lurk in the background to see how a list goes. But they do have questions and when a question is asked that you feel unnecessary, please remember that each of us was once a newbie and did not know all the ins and outs of being a list member. We all had questions and someone was nice enough to help us with the answers without making us feel real stupid.......I know lots of folks did for me. So welcome these newbies to our list because they just might hold the key to unlocking some of your family mysteries. Joyce, list manager
