I use the site quite a bit. When it first disappeared -- and I hadn't heard of the other link --it was really a nuisance because it means having to carry around the text version. Unfortunately that's a problem sometimes with websites -- they disappear never to return. That's apparently what happened to local.ie which was another good site to help people find locations, esp towns that don't appear on roadmaps. For local.ie I haven't found any comparable website yet. Eilis O'Hara --- Christina Hunt <Ninah@carolina.rr.com> wrote: > That's good. There is also one at Irish Ancestors: http://scripts.ireland.com/ancestor/placenames/index.cfm Same idea as seanruad. That's the Irish Times website which is a good reference and has civil parish maps which makes the references in the Townland database make more sense. The Administrative Divisions can be very difficult for researchers outside Ireland especially too since there was a somewhat different configuration before the Sean Ruad list which was ca 1851. Local ie had the small towns/villages (not townlands) often with maps or pictures and was a good reference for those in the US who wouldn't be able to find them on a regular Irish roadmap. So many of the roadmaps US tourists use aren't detailed enough. They could print the maps off local ie and bring them when they came over.
