Margaret Rafter(y) was born in nearby Timacat, Parish of Kilcullen, Co Galway, in 1846, very close to Ballina, Co Mayo. During the famine her parents made it somehow to England, but both died. She, two sisters, a brother were raised in workhouses in England to 14 .... and all the girls came to the USA, to NYC, but the brother did not and I have located him on the UK 1881 Census with his family, where it says he was born in Co Mayo..... so it looks like the family may have moved a bit in Ireland, too, before going to England .... and maybe only my grandmother, the youngest and born during the famine, was born in Galway. The English changed their surname to Raftree, all the children. There is no such name in Ireland and the brother (and family) was the only one in England in 1881! Please share with me any info you have that might confirm or deny a relationship. I will look further in Ballina as a result of your post. Thanks so much!
