John SHIELDS b 1824 and his brother Laurence SHIELDS b 1832 (both in ireland) both stone/marble workers John entered the US at Baltimore 12 Sept 1848 (from Liverpool) m. Catherine (Kate) KELLY *(b 1825) in Washington DC Jun 19, 1850 in St. Patrick's RC church. This from his naturalization papers. it is not known when Laurence came. John died of typhoid, Aug 22, 1859 in WashDC. They had 4 daughters. Laurence SHIELDS m. Harriet BARRETT(b 1839) in Washington DC Jun 28, 1860 in St. Patrick's RC church in WashDC They had one daughter, Margaret, b 1862. Laurence died about 1863--was he in the Civil War? * Catherine KELLY b 1825 in Co. Louth was daughter of Peter KELLY and __? She had a brother Nicholas (b 1822, died Apr 1855, WashDC) It is not known wen Catherine and Nicholas emigrated, but Catherine was here in 1850. It is not known whether Nicholas was married. Their father, Peter KELLY, was born 1793 (probably the Peter KELLY b Dysart, par of Togher, Co Louth) perhaps the son of Nicholas KELLY and Catherine CONWELL. He came to the US in Oct 1852, landing in Baltimore. Anyone researching other SHIELDS and KELLYS who lived in Wash DC or KELLYs from Togher in Louth, please write!! Janet C-S
