    3. Many, many times, when "family stories" say the ancestor "came from Cork" or "emigrated from Cork" that doesn't mean they -lived- there, it refers to the fact that they got on the boat there. Of course, some immigrants also lived in Cork for a time either waiting for the boat or earning the money for a ticket. While County Cork is very large, there is no feasible way everyone who says they "came from Cork" actually lived there... and this has even happened in my own family where I have cousins who -insist- the family came from Cork even when evidence proves otherwise. Family stories are good places to start, sometimes they are correct or have some truth, but always go with the evidence.
