If you know the townland where your ancestor came from, then send a researcher into the Valuation Office in Dublin to obtain transcripts of the House Books, which cover a period pre-Griffith - perhaps only a few years before Griffith, but nevertheless, in our instance they showed all the land swapping that went on in 1847-48 after the flood of people left during the famine. These can not be photocopied. You can also ask for photocopies of the Cancelled Books.
