    3. I too have the name "Filo" among my ancestors. It is also spelled "Philo" in several documents. I believe the name is German in origin as my ancestors originally were born in Germany. I have seen it on several census documents for counties in New York State. The man who was called this had the given name of William Henry, his mother came from Ireland, his father from Germany. 3. Aaarrrgh! Gotta be careful with these nicknames. My uncle William Hartigan is known as Bud. Does this mean that Bud = William?? And a childhood buddy named Ed went by Chuck. Ed = Chuck? I think not. Finally, my great-uncle Gaetano D'Anca (yeah, I know, Sicilian name doesn't equal Irish name, but, stilll...) went by Tony. Very confusing when my father, Anthony, also was Tony. -- --- Richard A. Danca, Newton, MA USA mailto:[email protected] ----

    3. Hi I grew up in Ireland and knew many people called Philo. It was usually short for Phillip O' Somebody. The latest Philo I have met was a few weeks ago. His full name was Phillip O'Kennedy and he had been called Philo since he was a young man. Hope this helps.
