    3. Hello Tim: First of all, I want to mention that many Irish who intended to go to USA took ships to Canada because that was the least expensive route. Many new arrivals simply worked as labourers only long enough to pay their fare and other expenses to get into USA so may not have been around during a census taking period. By the way, Canada's census are done on odd numbered years while USA are done on even numbered years.
