    1. Re: [SH] Scally Family Roscommon
    2. Either Charles or Kathie at [email protected] writes: >> Birth was recorded in the District of Ballaghadeaaen, the registrar's District of Caskleea << I'm sure this is Ballaghaderreen, and the other is probably Castlereagh again. >> Parish of Longhglynn << This is Loughglynn, also written Loughglinn. >> My Grandfather, Thomas Scally was born on 10/20/ 1893 in Carrowbehy << The townland of Carrowbehy is located along the R 293 regional road, about 5 miles NE of Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo and roughly the same distance due west of the small Roscommon town of Loughglinn. Carrowbehy is over 800 acres, and has a general boxy-shape, tilted 45 degrees, with a broad extension a bit to the north and a thinner, longer one to the south......shaped sort-of like Texas or India (Wow ! How often do those two places appear together in the same sentence !). The main body of the town is about a mile across in all directions, except the panhandles north and south extend that dimension to about 2 miles. As of 20 years ago, there were only about a dozen buildings in the townland, nearly all of them along a local road just to the north of the R 293, and running more-or-less parallel to it. >> I am coming to visit in early spring next year and would like to visit in that area and find out more about our Ireland family, but I really have no idea where to go and even where to stay. << I would think that a B&B in the general areas of Ballyhaunis or Ballaghaderreen would be a good place to start. Even Castlerea town. All three are within 7 or 8 miles of Carrowbehy. A good place to check for B&Bs would be: >> http://www.townandcountry.ie/ << (Don't forget that these three towns are in two counties) It's a nice area to visit - lots of small loughs, some hills, some woodlands - a fair number of "early sites" in the general neighborhood. I've driven right through Carrowbehy on my way to Urlaur priory a bit to the NW, but I don't recall the townland at all - of course. If you have any questions, let me know.
