Well, just when you think things are bad.... it looks like Hurricane Ivan is headed for Mobile... or at least close enough to cause major problems. I am probably going to evacuate to my cousins in Florida (north of Tampa) .... with the dogs and cat ... I have asked Janet Cassidy-Stroh to handle the list while I am away... I may be able to check in while at my cousins if I do go.... still not 100% sure but better safe than sorry and I am really spooked about this one. Just wanted to let you all know what was going on. Keep good thoughts for all of us in the path of Ivan the Terrible... and hopefully I will talk with you soon. Hi Judy, The Griffiths Index I have (from FTM) has just 24 Denis CLEARY entries & of these only 1 is from Tipperary but the Parish is Ballynaclough & Townland is Lisatunny. The remaining 23 come from Clare (7), Cork (6), Kerry (2), Kildare (1), Kilkenny (1), Limerick (4) & Offaly/Kings (2) . Unfortunately the disc does not contain any further information about any of these except Parish & perhaps Location. If any of these whet your interest I'l provide what I can. Best Regards, Ross Cleary, Kiama Heights, NSW, Australia. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Judith Webb" <webbj@chartermi.net> To: <SHAMROCK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, September 13, 2004 1:22 AM Subject: [SH] Griffiths Evaluation Look up > Hi all > I just went into irishorigins.com and typed in a free research for Denis > Cleary, and it came up with 33 references to him on the evaluation, and > then when I tried to get it, they wanted me to pay for it...I didn;t go > for it because after they had my credit card # Idon;t know if they just > keep me on as a member and take it out of the card??? Hi everyone, Just wanted to let everyone know that I am postponing the Ancestor Party activity for a week or so until we see what happens with Hurricane Frances in the southern US. We have a lot of members in the Florida area, and as of right now, the weather people can't say for sure if it will go into the Gulf and eventually affect us here in the Mobile area. So.... I had planned to give everyone info on our activity... but we'll wait a bit and see what happens. I surely hope everyone who may be affected by this powerful Hurricane takes every precaution. Don't forget.... if your power goes off and your mailbox fills up, most lists will automatically unsubscribe you after 3 bounces (undeliverable mail), so heaven forbid that happens to you (ever, it happened to me when I was in the hospital longer than expected and my mailbox just filled up), and you don't get list messages, you will need to subscribe again to whatever lists you bounced off of. So stay safe, and by Tuesday or Wednesday I will be able to tell you more (fingers crossed). Maura _________________________________________________________________ Dont just search. Find. The 654 ton Marquis Cornwallis set sail from Cork to New South Wales in 1795 and carried 244 Irish men and women prisoners. There was a revolt on the ship prompted by intolerable conditions suffered by the passengers who were chained below decks and frequently fell victim to disease. Captain Michael Hogan who was born in Co. Clare in 1766 was the ship's captain and quelled the mutiny. Hogan made his fortune as a slave trader and merchant and the ship's log reveals the aftermath of the mutiny. Hogan settled in New York in 1804 and bought a mansion on the Hudson River. He went on to found the town of Hogansburg in northern New York State and later became the first US Consul to Chile. The log is to be auctioned in London and is expected to realise as much as £150k. That's the Irish Times website which is a good reference and has civil parish maps which makes the references in the Townland database make more sense. The Administrative Divisions can be very difficult for researchers outside Ireland especially too since there was a somewhat different configuration before the Sean Ruad list which was ca 1851. Local ie had the small towns/villages (not townlands) often with maps or pictures and was a good reference for those in the US who wouldn't be able to find them on a regular Irish roadmap. So many of the roadmaps US tourists use aren't detailed enough. They could print the maps off local ie and bring them when they came over. The winner of the Rose of Tralee crown at the Rose of Tralee Festival in Co. Kerry is 20-year-old Orla O'Shea of Kilkenny. Ms. O'Shea is starting her first job as a primary schoolteacher in Dublin. This is the first year Co. Kilkenny has put forward its own Rose. Contestants come from all over the world to compete for the title. I use the site quite a bit. When it first disappeared -- and I hadn't heard of the other link --it was really a nuisance because it means having to carry around the text version. Unfortunately that's a problem sometimes with websites -- they disappear never to return. That's apparently what happened to local.ie which was another good site to help people find locations, esp towns that don't appear on roadmaps. For local.ie I haven't found any comparable website yet. Eilis O'Hara --- Christina Hunt <Ninah@carolina.rr.com> wrote: > That's good. www.seanruad.com has had problems in the last month. I understand it had to do with the domain name not being re-registered. I did get to it last night though so it seems to be online again. As an alternate url you can reach the database at: http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/ireatlas/ Regards, Christina On Mon, 30 Aug 2004 12:06:13 +0100 (BST), Eilis O'Hara wrote: | I included the URL link in my previous response. You may be referring to the Sean Ruad Ireland Townland Database website. It's http://www.seanruad.com If the place name you enter isn't recognised (sometimes emigrant locations were interpretated phonetically) the search feature allows you not only to search by exact match but other variables. You can also search by county and get the list of all townlands and other administrative divisions in that county. Just select the county you're interested in and you'll get the list. You can have it sorted in different ways according to civil parish, barony, etc. You'll find a description of the administrative divisions in Ireland at http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/news/articles/2435.asp Eilis O'Hara --- rnbill@centurytel.net wrote: > Hi > > There have been several postings about some site > where one could go and enter a place name and the > location would be shown. > > Does anyone know the information on how to find > it/them? > > Thanks Bill Dalton > > > > > > > > ==== SHAMROCK Mailing List ==== > ** To contact the listowner send a > message to mpetzolt2@webtv.net ** > > ________________________________________________________________________ Yahoo!
