The Irish Emigration Research Project based in Blennerville, near Tralee, Co. Kerry is the result of six years of work by twelve FÁS trainees. They have transcribed and indexed all the handwritten ships' passenger lists from 1840-80 for the ports of Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia. They're continuing to work on the New York and Philadelphia lists post 1850. Delia Murphy was a ballad singer from Hollymount, Co. Mayo. She was born on February 16, 1902 in Ardroe, Claremorris. The family soon moved to Mount Jennings in Hollymount. Her father was Jack Murphy from near Hollymount, Co Mayo and he made his money in America during the Klondike Gold Rush. While there he married Anna Fanning from Roscrea, Co Tipperary and they returned to live in Ireland in 1901. Delia married Tom Kiernan who became an Irish diplomat. They were married in 1924 and had four children. The family moved to London and Delia returned in Ireland in 1935. In 1939 she recorded "The Blackbird", "The Spinning Wheel" and "Three Lovely Lassies". From 1941 she went to various diplomatic posts with her husband: and between 1951 and 1955 she lived in Ireland where she continued singing and became more recognized. In 1952 she was performing her songs in England, particularly "The Spinning Wheel" and "The Moonshiner". The family then moved to Canada where she bought a house in the country near Ottawa. In 1969 she returned to Dublin. She died on February 11, 1971. Further detail on Delia Murphy can be found in: "I'll Live Till I Die: The Story of Delia Murphy", by Aidan O'Hara. It is Friday early afternoon here and this is the latest.... according to my neighbor who I spoke with on the phone, our homes are relatively ok.... some fence damage and they lost 2 trees including one which came up roots and all, both landed thankfully on the fence between our yards instead of on their roof. She didn't see any damage to my house but they are going to look again today... so that is a BIG relief. The power is out and Alabama Power says not to expect it before Sept 29.. but I'm hoping that is a generic answer. I do know their website says nearly 80% of their stations are gone so they have help from other states in now and will start working. I know driving here I counted 215 Power trucks from other states driving towards Mobile, I stopped counting at 215. I think they had gone to FL to help with the storms there and just were moving over. The bad news right now is that the roads are so damaged I am not sure right now if I can even get back to Mobile... Interstate 10 is so damaged in Pensacola which got the brunt of the storm, the bridge is out that goes over the bay, and so I have to figure out an alternate route, the problem is the alternate routes that go from state to state are also closed as they are closer to the water and still flooded. I may end up driving up to Montgomery and then down, but parts of Montgomery are flooded also from all the rain. I am going to try and figure out something today and then try and leave in the early morning .... I know the dogs are about to drive my cousin crazy as they are used to being with me inside and here they need to stay outside as they have 3 dogs, 2 cats and a cockateil, so basically its' a zoo! Even if I don't have power, at this point I just want to be in my own bed. So for me it could have been much worse, and I am grateful. I still am up in the air and won't relax til I see my house myself, but from there I can deal with it. I just had visions of the 3 big pine trees in my yard sticking out of my roof :) but that evidently didn't happen. So I will keep in touch and if the power is off tho you may not hear from me for awhile, but I will be in touch by phone with people who will know what is going on. Thanks for all your kind thoughts... Maura _________________________________________________________________ Get ready for school! Patricio, this probably isn't exactly what you want, but it is a free viewer program. Go to the site and read about it there. If you click on the manual button (upper right box), you can get more info. I recently downloaded it (it was recommended to me), and it is a handly tool. They also have other products that you can buy. Here is an article quote from Dick Eastman's "Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter': The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 2004 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. Information about the newsletter is available at http://www.eogn.com. "GENViewer Lite is a special limited-feature version of the commercial program GENViewer. It is free and can be freely distributed. GENViewer Lite is a Windows based application that is used to view and analyze GEDCOM and PAF 3, 4, 5, TMG 4.x, 5.x and Family Tree Maker genealogy files. With GENViewer Lite, you can search and view dozens of files in minutes. No database files are created on your computer when viewing files. Best of all, the program is tiny at only 870 kilobytes in size. It easily fits on a floppy disk. You can legally give it to relatives, along with a copy of your genealogy program's database, so that they too can view your data. You can learn more about GENViewer Lite or download the program at http://www.mudcreek.ca/genviewer_lite.htm." ~Patsy~ Researching my family in Ireland: KELLY from Glenflesk, Co. FYI: The New England Historic Genealogical Society has sent out the following info on an open house set for Thursday, Sept. 23. It's free and seems to include some interesting stuff -- though I doubt it's worth a special trip to Boston if you're far away. NOTE: This is *all* I know about this event. Please go to the NEHGS web site (link below) if you have questions (and not to me!). Thanks. ------------- The New England Historic Genealogical Society invites you to attend an anniversary open house at 101 Newbury Street on Thursday, September 23, 2004, from 2 to 6 p.m. The theme is "Celebrating Forty Years on Newbury Street," in recognition of the Society's move to its present location in the fall of 1964. The Society was founded in 1845. A series of small events is being planned for the September 23rd open house, including tours, remarks by staff representatives, light refreshments, and a 15% discount on books. Special mini-seminars will take place at 20-minute intervals beginning at 3 p.m. They include the following: Remarks by Ralph Crandall, Executive Director "An Introduction to the New NewEnglandAncestors.org" with Michael Leclerc "Getting Started in Genealogy" with David Dearborn "Researching Immigrant Ancestors" with Marie Daly "Probing Probate Records" with Ruth Wellner "Gems of the NEHGS Manuscript Collection" with Tim Salls Printed PDF announcements of the event are available for download on the NEHGS website at <http://www.newenglandancestors.org/education/main/nehgs_open_house.asp> -- --- Richard A. I have made a special disk for a relative who has to use other's computers. I convert the GED to HTML and then make up a CD with an AUTORUN.INF file and a small freeware program called BROWSERCALL that activates the computers internet browser with the HTML index. The two programs I use are GED2HTML.exe and BrowserCall.exe I use the registered version of GED2HTML with a tailoring file called RSTEWART.G2H because I find the five generation display attractive. I'll be glad to respond to any queries for full particulars - or to post the full invormation if the list owner agrees. Ernie Kraut
Sue, You do not need an appointment for the GRO (unless that changed since last year). However, this place is the current registration place for Dublin to get a civil record. The hours are restricted. That is, it opens at 9:30 (check on this I may be wrong), it closes for lunch from 12:30 to 2 PM (go to the Museum of Art for lunch. Has a nice cafeteria on second floor) and closes for the day at 4:30. For 15 EU, you have unrestricted use of all the volumes for the day. However, you have to que up to get them (up to five at a time). Also you can only requested five copies (at 1.90 EU per) of records for the day. That's a bummer. If you get there before the office opens (morning or afternoon), do not be dismayed by the long line. Go to the front steps and stand to the left. Researchers are let in first (go to second floor). The others take a numbered ticket when they enter. Good luck. Dear Shamrockers : Does anybody in the list know if there is a way to convert a GED file to a presentation in Power Point ? The idea is to make a presentation of my family tree, so that I can show it in any equipment, without the need to install a genealogical software. Thanks for any idea. Slainte Patricio Mac Donagh
Just to let you know what is going on... if you are not interested just delete. :) Well, I finally made it to my cousins house after what turned into a 10 hour drive .... traffic was heavy with mandatory evacuations below I-10 so it took me hours literally to get through Tallahassee as traffic was stop and go 3 feet, stop etc. I got here tho... dogs and cat and all. If you ever want a fun experience, drive 500 miles with 3 whining dogs including a dalmation who has his head on your shoulder most of the way. They were pretty good tho considering. As of now, it looks bad for my house.... I am 3 miles from the Mississippi/Alabama line and that is right where it is headed. I have no idea if I will even have a house to go back to. I have the 3 dogs, the cat, their stuff, some clothes, my genealogy stuff (well, most of it, I left some of it by accident) and some family photos, my crocheting, my Mother's jewelry and grandmothers prayer books and my grandfathers fire department badge. That's it. At least I left tho as I suppose if worst comes to worst, I can always replace most of the other stuff... (oh Lordy, my grandmothers china...) I have good insurance. And I'm trying not to panic. My cousin here in Yankeetown just got power back 2 days ago after being hit by Charley and Frances, and Ivan's feeder bands are starting to hit here, so their house is still boarded up. I am a nervous wreck right now.. I don't know if it's worse being here and not knowing what is happening to my home, or going through it. Well, I do know... it's better I got out. Anyway... I can check email from my cousin's computer... so I will be in touch. Thank you for all your good thoughts... we can all use them as this is a bad one. Note to my dollhouse groups... please dont' send anything to my home address right now as I have absolutely no idea what the mail is like now, or for the near future.
