    1. Apprenticeships.
    2. Mokurai
    3. Hi All, I am trying to find out if Ireland had apprenticeships for Mariners like England had. I have Mathew POWER who was born in Waterford,Ireland in about 1787. I found him as a Mate on ths ship HIRAM in 1808 - 1810. Therefore I should imagine he had to do an apprenticeship to get to the Mariners status. I understand that (at least in the case of England) apprentices were written into the Parish Books and controlled through them and the Master of the ship the apprentice sailed on. Thank you for any assistance you can give me in finding this information. Hooray, Warren in Ballarat, Australia (ex Kiwi).

    1. McATEER and CAMPBELL
    2. Mokurai
    3. Hi all, I am looking for information on my paternal grandmother's side. Her father was John CAMPBELL from Antrim, and her mother was Catherine McATEER, also from Antrim...or as her Death Notice said, from County Derry. Catherine was born on the 17 May 1857 whilst I estimate John to have been born in 1854. They both, along with Catherine's brother James, came to New Zealand on the ship RAKAIA in 1878...leaving London on the 16 July and arriving in Wellington on 8 September. John later went into the Cartage business. Catherine died on 19 July 1916 and John on the 13 February 1929. If there is anyone in Ireland who relates to this family I would love to hear from you. Thank for any information you can give me on these three. Hooray, Warren in Ballarat,Australia (ex Kiwi).

    1. Mathew POWER
    2. Mokurai
    3. Hi All, I am wondering if there is anyone out there who may have a connection to my ancestor, Mathew POWER. He was born in Waterford,Ireland about 1787. I do not knwo who his parents were as I first found him in 1807 when he got married; then in 1808-10 as the Mate aboard the ship HIRAM. After that he became a Master Mariner on numerous ships. His first ship was a schooner MARY of Plymouth. It appears he worked out of Plymouth most of his life. I have him there up until 1831 to date. Still looking at that end.....and now in Waterford for his birth/baptism. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Hooray, Warren in Ballarat, Australia (ex Kiwi).

    3. Hi Max, This sounds like it could be an interesting site but I received a security warning before the site would open. It said that it's security clearance had expired. When I looked for the details it showed that it expired in October and they have not renewed it. I was warned to not go there. I hope that they will read this and obtain a new clearance. 2. Adeline Martin
    3. Hi Listers, I am new to this List so I will post my interests. I am looking for anyone who has the names of Martin, Hollans/Holland, Dempsey, Summers, Farrel on their family trees. My Gt.-Grandfather Daniel Martin went to Kelso, Scotland from Co. Monaghan in 1842 and Co's Cavan and Tipperary are areas that I think the families came from. Daniel's brother Thomas/Terrance went to Leith, Scotland at the same time with his family, some moved to the U.S. in 1860 and the others returned to Ireland in the 1890's.
