    3. I've never been involved in this, but it sounds like a good way to review what everyone is researching and a good way to put my info out to others. I'd like you to set this up if it isn't too hard, what with you not having a computer at home. Diane, and thank you. Happy St. Patrick's Day

Would appreciate being kept in thoughts and prayers. Would you all like to do an Ancestor Party like we missed last year? If you don't know what that is, it's kind of a "Roll Call" where you list just the people you are researching in Ireland... we have some guidelines I would post. People who dont' like to participate (as it usually generates a LOT of emails ) tend to unsub for that week and rejoin us... so I usually give a few days heads up so people can prepare, and it goes on for about a week to allow plenty of time. We usually have done two a year, one for St. Patricks day activity and one around 1 Sept or so. If you're interested, please just email the list. 1. Ancestor Party .. getting ready
    2. Maura Petzolt
    3. OK, in just the few minutes since I posted that notice I've already been inundated with YES emails so we'll do it. Let me get it organized, I can't tell you what day I'll get it done as my schedule this week is a bit up in the air... but lets go ahead and do this. Many people want to switch to digest instead of individual emails (with over 1000 on the list, that's a lot of emails even if only half participate, and usually nearly everyone does). So if you are on regular INDIVIDUAL emails and want to switch to digest, this is how you do it Send the word unsubscribe (no other text ) in the body of an email to SHAMROCK-L-request@rootsweb.com .. then... send subscribe (no other text) in the body of an email to SHAMROCK-D-request@rootsweb.com If you want to just unsubscribe for the week or so we do this (I'm thinking of starting this maybe this weekend and going through next weekend)... then you send unsubscribe in the body of an email (no other text) to either the following addresses depending on if you are on regular or digest form. Send it to the correct address, for example if you are on digest and want to unsubscribe, and you send it to the L address which covers regular mail, then it wont' do anything. That confuses a LOT of people For regular individual mail send unsubscribe/subscribe requests to SHAMROCK-L-request@rootsweb.com For digest mail send unsubscribe/subscribe requests to SHAMROCK-D-request@rootsweb.com Needless to say, no commands go to the posting address of SHAMROCK-L@rootsweb.com even tho people do that. I'd ask the help of listmembers here as my computer access is limited. If someone posts an unsubscribe to the list, please someone email them these directions (maybe copy and paste them?) privately... that would help out a lot right now. So .. go ahead and get your computer set up how you want... and then also get your info together, this is just for IRISH ancestors not everyone in your line. There's a format but basically its just who, where and when, and what you're looking for. Don't start yet tho.... I'll send an email about when to start sending. With members all over the world (literally) I always give at least 3 days to get everyone notified and let them switch to digest if they want. 1. Re: [SH] Re: O/T FTM - Legacy - GEN View?
    2. Richard Danca
    3. Yup. Discussing the merits of different genealogy programs is off-topic indeed -- at least on this list. However... My suggestion: find a list that discusses genealogical (and other) software. Start here<http://lists.rootsweb.com/> and scroll down to the Other section. Once you choose one you can browse or search the archive and sign up if you want to. Other likely candidates are discussion groups in Usenet (use a news reader), Yahoo or other portal sites. You may find something interesting in the about.com subsites; I believe there's at least one on genealogy. And there's always google or another search engine. Hope this helps. -- --- Richard A. 3. I have Family Tree Maker but am considering switching programs so the posting requesting comments on FTM, Legacy, etc. is timely for me. I am considering Legacy but Master Genealogist looks interesting, too. I forget which program I saw this feature in, but in the notes area, if you have comments in it for your own reference but don't really want them made public, you can put a symbol in front of the comment and it won't print out. I think this is a great feature. Anyone familiar with what I am trying to describe? I have also run across GEN View and it looks like what I might be interested in as an additional tool for viewing my files. Any comments on this series? I downloaded CLOOZ sample but got nowhere with it. Anyone use this? I would love to hear opinions on this topic. Mary Jo

I would definitely go for Legacy! It even has a free version for download and if it wasn't for you the database can be outputted to a GEDCOM file and imported to the program of your choice. http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Index.asp?mid=37KBuUi I think which ever you choose you are in for a lot of typing, cutting and pasting etc. Legacy have some real clever people (and staff) on their users forum. http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/LegacyLists.asp They would be the people to ask. 3. I'm pretty sure a discussion of WordPerfect and genealogy programs would be 100% *on* topic at one of the zillion other Rootsweb mailing lists. I believe there's at least one with "software" in its name. So...go to <www.rootsweb.com>, look on the left panel for info on mailing lists and follow the links. I think you'll probably find something good in the "Other" mailing lists. (There are many other Irish lists, too.) Hope this helps. -- --- Richard A.
