I believe the correct spelling of the surname for the Itish poet-pariot-martyr is "Emmet." There is only one "T" is his family name. Mary
I am taking a trip to Ireland, and would like to find relatives of Robert Hickey,b.Nov., 1829,immigrated to US in 1853, wife, Margaret. Thank you.E-mail me at: pfretts@cvzoom.net
Birth certificates include the date and place of birth; the name; the sex; the name, surname and residence of the father; the name, surname, maiden surname of the mother; the rank, profession or occupation of the father; and the name and qualifications of the informant, usually a family member. A given name was not obligatory, so some entries are Kelly, Male or Clarke, Female. The FHLC holds microfilm copies of the index and certificates for 1864-1955. Do you mean in the Indexes to the Irish Birth records? That is where i would look. I have a copy of my gr-grandmother Margaret Foley's death certificate. She was buried in Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City, NJ, on Nov. 19, 1943, accdg. to interment list from cem. Death cert. from Trenton says parents' names were Henry and Mary Mack, and that Margaret was born in Ireland. Age reported on interment list was 75, making birth ca. 1868. Also have marriage record from first marriage in 1888 to Patrick Coughlin (Coughlan) in St. Mary's at Jersey City. Marriage record states Margaret's parents as Henry and Susan Corcoran. Same record states her age as 26, making birth ca. 1861. LDS has no Henry and Susan Corcoran. Family lore says Clare was county of origin, across Shannon from the airport. Searching that west coast area in Kildysart parish revealed no Henry and Susan (nee Corcoran) Foley in parish records. Death cert. also says Margaret was in community 55 years, which implies immigration ca. 1888. Can't find her name on any published passenger list, whether on internet or in books. Family lore says Margaret was related to current living Foleys of Clonola, Kildysart, in Clare, but have not been able to establish any such connection with documentation. Any takers? ===== Genealogy = disturbing the dead and irritating the living. Looking to disturb surnames FOLEY, COUGHLIN, DAVEY, MCDONNEL, MCGRATH, O'NEILL. Please con- tact me with any info regarding names in Jersey City or Co. Clare, Ireland. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I have exhausted all my leads in the US. Death Certs, Burial records, Grave visits, Naturalization Papers, Soc Sec, Ellis Island.org, Census Records and expensive American Genealogist .The only word they use in place of Birth is Ireland All I have to go with is what I recieved from a Marrage log entry from St Patricks, Newark NJ My Great Grandfather Daniel O'Shaughnessy born 1851 in Ireland The year of his birth was found on his Gravestone. Son of Jeramiah O'Shaughnessy and Mary O'Connell I would like to find from what County or town they came from for a visit upon retirement.Respectfully Charles
Hello everyone, I am sending my request in hopes that someone out there in computer land might be of assistance. I am searching for Ann Elizabeth DONAHOE. From relatives I received her birthdate as 1838 in Ireland. Not much help, huh! It is possible that she was born in Cork County, but nothing solid on that one. I have no information on her parents whatsoever! Ann came to America around the time that she married (assuming). My family call her a "tobacco bride". Why the term, I have no idea, but apparently her husband to be paid her passage to come to the US so that he could marry her. She married Smith BONSER on December 31, 1865 in Denver, Colorado. So, if he paid for her passage, I am assuming that she arrived somewhere between 1860-1865, but probably more like 1864-1865. I have seen her name spelled Anne, Annie, Anna and Ann. Very frustrating. I have a copy of her obit and marriage license, but neither one shows her parents names or mentions siblings. She is buried in Wyoming. As for Griffith's, this is what I have found: CD #188-Index to Griffiths's Valuation of Ireland (1848-1864-Head of Household & Location Only) Anne Donahoe-County Dublin, Clonmethan Parish-Living at Oldtown (since she is listed as head of household, I doubt this is her, unless it is her mother?) CD #188-Index to Griffith's Valuation of Ireland (1848-1864-Head of Household & Location Only) Elizabeth Donahoe-County Waterford, Whitechurch Parish-Living at Ballylemon (don't believe this one would be Ann because she appears to have gone by the name Ann Elizabeth not Elizabeth, but it is still a possibility). If anyone has any ideas as to an approach to find where in Ireland she might have been born, her family and when she came to the US and what ship, I would truly be appreciative. I know it is a long list, but nothing ventured nothing gained. I continue to look for her on the different site addresses for passenger lists, with zero luck so far. Yesterday I received info on 2 births, father is Charles MAHER. There are 2 different surnames for the mothers, but I think they could be the same person, considering how they misspelled so much in those days. Mary CLEARY and Mary GARRY. Birthplace is the same -- Kildare, Co Kildare and the dates are 1868 and 1871. And I know that sometimes the surname ended up being different, as I have found my gg grandfather with 2 surnames in church records in the US and I know those records were all of my family! The priest slipped up only once in regards to that extra surname, so I think the above 2 Marys could be one and the same also. Anything look familiar? Debbie
Here's what I know so far... Patrick HEFFRON and Bridget HEALY came over from County Mayo, Ireland with their families and cousins (MORANs and HUGHES) in 1847 and settled in the Grand Rapids, MI area. Patrick and Bridget married and had at least 2 daughters one of whom was Margaret (b. 1861) who is my g-grandmother. According to family history, Patrick had a farm near Grand Rapids. In 1885, at Old St. Pat's Catholic Church in Chicago, IL, Margaret HEFFRON married James Clark DEARHAM (James added the "a" - original family name was DERHAM). So far I haven't been able to verify that Patrick and Bridget HEFFRON were also in Chicago then. I haven't found them in the 1880 Federal Census for either MI or IL. James was born in 1859 in New York City according to his death certificate. His parents were Joseph DERHAM and Margaret CLARK who were both born in Ireland and who died sometime in the 1870s. James and Margaret had five children, James who died in infancy, John Heffron b. 1886 (my grandfather), Paul Aloysius, Joseph Raymond (called Ray), and Margaret Ann. I am trying to find out where they all came from in Ireland and to get birth/christening records. I have looked at ship listings available on the internet and haven't found them. Could someone suggest what other steps I can take? From what I have read, I'll need more information than just names and a probable year of immigration to the U.S. but I haven't the vaguest notion where I can get more information if I don't know exactly where in County Mayo they came from. And in the case of the DERHAMs, I don't even know which county they came from - death certificate just says Ireland. Thanks. Sue O'Neill Murray, KY suoneill@apex.net

Now that a new year has begun and we have started to get an influx of new subscribers, many of whom are new to genealogy and/or the internet, it may be a good time for all of us to review just how to write a good query so that you will get the most help that you can. The full writing on this is on my Helpful Hints page, url below.... but here are a few main points..... The -worst- thing you can say, and unfortunately what most people -do- say, is "Looking for information on....". That tells those of us who might be able to help you absolutely nothing about exactly what you are looking for, or what you have already done. There are many, many helpful people on mailing lists, and it's very frustrating to go to the time and trouble to outline what a person can do only to be told "oh, I"ve already tried that". Basically the thing to do is Tell us WHAT you have already done Tell us WHAT specifically you are looking for (names of parents? date of birth? passenger list?) Tell us WHO exactly you are looking for (it's amazing how many people send requests to lists with no dates or places stated.) Please take a moment to review this section on the Helpful Hints page (which came to be from the most common answers I sent to mailing lists, I put them on a webpage as I was tired of retyping the same info all the time.... and that page was awarded the first ever Family History Favorite Award by Ancestry.com ) Hope this helps the newbies and us "oldies" too! <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints

I have an Edward Maher who married my gg grandfather's sister. 2. Elizabeth b. bef 1820, married Edward MAHER. Edward b. abt. 1812 Ballytarana, Parish of Paulstown, Co. Kilkenny. Died 1896. Elizabeth died 1899. Both are buried in Ballinkillen, Parish of Bagenalstown, Co Carlow. They had 13 children and I do have some information on them. Hoping to find more info on Edward and Elizabeth's family. I also have located living descendents of this couple and they may be interested in any info on Edward's parents, sibs, etc. I have not searched the parish records for Edward's birth and birth family, but there is a short family history, giving his place of birth. Charles parents were Elizabeth BYRNE and Edward MAHER. Charles was the oldest of 13 children, all born in Ballyloughan, Parish of Bagenalstown, Co Carlow. It's possible Charles lived near the Co Carlow border after he moved to Co Kildare. He may have bought a farm. Elizabeth b. bef 1820, married Edward MAHER.
