Family lore relates Jane DARBY, widow, with her 3 children, ages 10, 8 and 6, immigrated to the US in 1851 from County Cork. After searching in Cork for a long time, did a distribution of the surname in Griffith Valuation, although done after 1851, showed no DARBY's in Cork. DARBYs were mostly in counties to the north. LDS films for the Tithe Applotment are by town/townland so am unable to use this source. Can anyone suggest a way to find out where Jane and family really came from? Chris Darby cmdarby@earthlink.net

WILLIAM SHEA CALLED TO REWARD She Was One of the Pioneer Teachers of Palo Alto County Mrs. William Shea passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.C. Egan, Monday evening after a rather brief illness, although she had been declining in health for several years. The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock. Services will be conducted at the Assumption church. Rev. L.J. Savage will officiate. The burial will be in St. John's cemetery. Mary Ann Martin was born in the county of Dublin, Ireland, July 28, 1844. Her age was 76. When she was three years old her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Martin, came to the United States and located at New Jersey where they remained for three more years. In 1850 they moved west and settled in the vicinity of Shullsburgh, Wisconsin. It was in that locality that Miss Martin grew to womanhood. She received a good education and taught in her home community for several years. In 1871 Mr. and Mrs. Martin and their daughter came to Palo Alto county and settled on a farm in Great Oak township. Miss Martin taught school in this county a number of years. She was one of the pioneer workers in the school rooms of this section. She was capable, pleasing and successful and throughout her life her pupils were her fast friends. June 6, 1874, Miss Martin was united in marriage to William Shea. They lived in Nevada township for many years finally selling out and building a home in this city. Mr. Shea passed away a number of years ago. Mrs. Shea spent some time with her son Leo at Deer Lodge, Montana, but, her health failing, she returned to Emmetsburg and subsequently lived with her daughter, Mrs. C.C. Egan. She is survived by three sons and one daughter. The sons are attorney T.F. Shea of Billings, Montana, Joseph of the Twin Cities and Leo of Emmetsburg. The only daughter, Mrs. C.C. Egan of Great Oak township, is well known to our many local readers. A brother, J.S. Martin, resides in Emmetsburg and a brother, James Martin, and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Shea, live at Ayrshire. Mrs. Shea was a humble, amiable, warm hearted Christian woman. She was widely known for her cheery manner, her good nature, and her genuine, unaffected hospitality. She was always glad to speak well of her associates and neighbors and to be of substantial service to them when they needed her assistance. Her early experience in school work enabled her to take a special interest in many matters that were not of particular concern to some with whom she mingled. She was a practical, devoted member of her church. She always gave to religion the high place it should hold in the motives and the lives of a people. She was eager to make her home hapy and life agreeable to those about her. For fifty years she contributed liberally and willingly, by her sunny nature and her hopeful anticipations, to the elevating, strengthening social and Christian sentiment that has had such influence for good in the activities of the people of our community. All that is mortal of this worthy, honored Christian lady will soon be consigned to a quiet resting place in St. John's cemetery but her edifying example, her earnest admonitions and her kind, helpful deeds will long survive in the hearts of those who knew her well and who respected her for her womanly virtues. The sincere sympathy of all is extended to the three sons, the daughter, and the brothers and sister in their bereavement. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Descendants of Mary Martin 1 Mary Martin b: 07/28/1844 in Dublin, Ireland src: Obit d: 03/07/1921 in Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Burial: St John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg, Iowa . +William Shea b: 05/12/1839 in Kilkenny, Ireland src1: Obit, src2: 1900 Census Palo Alto County, Iowa m: 06/07/1874 in Palo Alto Co, Iowa d: 1911 Burial: St John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg, Iowa ........ 2 Rose J Shea b: 03/1875 src: 1900 Census Palo Alto County, Iowa ............ +Cornelius C Egan b: Bet. 1866 - 1867 in Minnesota m: 01/29/1901 d: 1941 Burial: St John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg, Iowa ........ 2 Joseph Shea ........ 2 Thomas Shea b: 06/1878 src: 1900 Census Palo Alto County, Iowa ........ 2 William Shea b: Bet. 1876 - 1877 ........ 2 Leo Shea b: 1886 d: 1964 ........ 2 James Shea b: 1880

I'd love to see the >content of these wills. Until 1858 there were two systems of probate in Ireland, both under the administration of the Church of Ireland:- the Diocesan and Prerogative Courts. A will was proved in the Diocesan Court covering the area in which the deceased lived IF the deceased's property was entirely within that diocese. The relevant diocese for most of Co. Kilkenny is Ossory (it includes Kilmaganny parish). The will of someone having property of £5 or more in a second diocese was proved in the Prerogative Court. The original wills were destroyed in 1922 and only a small percentage of abstracts and transcripts survive, though 99.999% of pre-1800 prerogative wills are covered by the Betham will abstracts. The two Granger wills you refer to are NOT prerogative. I presume you got the references in Phillimore's Index to Irish Wills (which is a copy made by Gertrude Thrift of the manuscript indexes to diocesan wills for various dioceses, including Ossory). However, this just tells you that these wills existed prior to 1922. Determining whether a copy has survived is another matter. There is no one index to surviving will abstracts and transcripts; they're scattered through various collections in various record repositories. The bad news is that the two most likely collections DON'T contain copies of these Granger wills. These collections are Father Carrigan's (held in St. Kieran's College in Kilkenny & on microfilm at the National Library) and Edmund Walsh Kelly's (published in the Old Kilkenny Review 1988). I'm hoping someone may have a reference or other source book available for this area in Kilkenny: Diocese of Ossory Civil Parish: Callan and Dunamaggan Local landowners or tax /census records? Civil registration of births in Ireland has the townland. The Index is for all Ireland. You can do-it-yourself at the local Family History Centers because the FHL has acquired 99% of National Archives passenger records. There are Family History Centers scattered throughout the world, located in the LDS meeting-houses. The FHCs are generally listed in the local phonebook under Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with its own phone number. Or, go to familysearch.org. In some communities, Family Search is in the local public library. No charge is made for using the resources at the local FHC except for a rental fee for microfilm from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Birth certificates include the date and place of birth; the name; the sex; the name, surname and residence of the father; the name, surname, maiden surname of the mother; the rank, profession or occupation of the father; and the name and qualifications of the informant, usually a family member. A given name was not obligatory, so some entries are Kelly, Male or Clarke, Female. The FHLC holds microfilm copies of the index and certificates for 1864-1955. Birth Index 1864-1955; Records 1864-1881 and 1900-1955 (note the gaps 1882-1899 and 1913-1930 in the FHLC). Some pages are missing from 1869: p. 49-50 (gap between Carroll, John, of Dungannon and Carvill, James Richard, of Limerick; and all pages following Thompson, Elenor Jane, of Belfast. Good Morning All Just an update on my progress on this quest. Many thanks to all who sent me advice and instruction on how to get this information. The deed is in progress. On Thursday Jan 18, 2001 I presented my completed request form to the INS office in New Orleans, and have received confirmation from them that they will address the matter and that it has been put in the queue. I guess I now just sit and wait. I will be sure to keep you all posted on the results. Just in case anyone knows anything about my grandfather, he was Patrick Joseph Kelly, born 13 Mar 1888, Co. Kildare, Ireland. Parents Simon A and Mary Cushing Kelly. Came to USA in early 1900's, went to work for Standard Oil Co of NJ in 1904, married Anna M. McCurnin in 1911, and died in 1940, in Baton Rouge, La. At the time of his death he was survived by 2 brothers, Thomas of NY and John of Port Arthur TX. Hopefully the naturalization petition will provide the Townland or Parish of his birth and baptism. Again THANKS Patricia

Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, November 12, 1913 MRS JAMES JENNINGS DEAD Was a Resident of Palo Alto Since 1880 Mrs. James Jennings, one of the old residents of this community, passed away Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.H. Walsh, of this city. Although she had not been physically strong for may years, she was not taken seriously ill until Thursday. She fully realized that the end was rapidly approaching and she made timely preparation for the final summons. The funeral most likely will be held tomorrow. Her son James and her daughter, Miss Lizzie, are coming from Springdale, Montana. Margaret O'Brien was born in the county of Cork, Ireland, in 1840. She came to the United States with her parents when she was quite young. They located in the vicinity of Morris, Illinois. Later they lived at Braidwood, that state. Miss O'Brien was married to James Jennings at Morris, in 1860. In February, 1880, Mr. and Mrs. Jennings came to this county and settled on a farm in Great Oak township. Mr. Jennings died a number of years ago. Some time later Mrs. Jennings came to Emmetsburg and subsequently made her home beside her daughter, Mrs. W.H. Walsh. There are two sons and four daughters living. The sons are Patrick of this city and James of Springdale, Montana. The daughters are Mrs. W.H. Walsh and Mrs. John Burns of this locality. Miss Margaret Jennings who has lived in the Twin Cities for some time, and Miss Lizzie, who resides with her brother at Springdale, Montana. William O'Brien, Sr., a brother, and Mrs. D. Brocham and Mrs. Murray, both sisters, reside in this locality. Mrs. Jennings was among the pioneer women of Great Oak township. Friends and neighbors knew her as an industrious, frugal woman, a kind, patient, devoted mother, and a most conscientious and useful member of society. In her declining years, her health failed and her husband died a number of years ago. Her sons and daughters showed her every attention, manifesting a high appreciation of all that she had done for them during their years of childhood. Though she has passed away, the memory of her many sacrifices for them will often be tenderly recalled. The sympathy of all is extended to them in their sorrow. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Descendants of John O'Brien (Margaret O'Brien Jennings' Father) 1 John O'Brien b: 1806 in County Cork, Ireland d: 1876 . +Catherine Cunningham b: 1810 d: 04/02/1875 src: St. John's Cemetery Records Burial: St John's Cemetery, E'burg, Iowa ........ 2 William J O'Brien b: 03/1834 in County Cork, Ireland src: 1900 Census Palo Alto County, Iowa d: 06/04/1917 in Emmetsburg Iowa Burial: St John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa ............ +Ann Daily b: 01/1835 in King's County, Ireland src: 1900 Census Palo Alto County, Iowa m: 1856 in Wilmington, Illinois d: 06/15/1905 in Emmetsburg Iowa Burial: St John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa ................... 3 John O'Brien b: 1857 in Illinois src: 1880 Palo Alto Co. Most of the wills were destroyed in the Four Courts fire of 1922. The Index survived and are found in the Public Records Office. Hi,Robert Castlecomer is just north of Kilkenny. I was there this summer. I later found out I should have gone a littles north but still within Castlecomer to poss. find my family TUITE father Patrick mother Mary Purcell. Their marriage would have fallen within your film time frame. I am also looking for another PURCELL family, Patrick and Mary (their marriage would fall into that film also) on the other side of the family and I am guess their children may have married. Thanks for any look up. If you need anymore info on Castlecomer write back off the list Ellen >From: "Robert H.
