I have a film number for the LDS re Irish civil Registrations, for deaths for 1900-1902. If I order the film, will it have the actual death cert, or will it just be an index of names of deaths which occurred during those years. Thanks, Yvonne
I am researching CALLAGHANs (and variants) who moved from Ireland to St Helens, Lancs, England around 1850. I would be pleased to hear from anyone with similar interests. Thanks Tim

The LDS filmed the actual death records for 1864-1870 only. Paul Gorry What's What in Irish Genealogy http://indigo.ie/~gorry
Got this book out of the library last week and finally got around to looking at it. It has suggested Tartans for Scottish, Scotch-Irish, Irish and North American Surnames with Lists of Clan, Family and District Tartans, by Philip D. Smith (Heritage Books, Inc.) Found my surnames I am researching: For the surname: closest Namematch Tartan McCaull MacCaul Mac Coll tartan Mc Mann MacMan(n) Manson tartan Warren Warren Fife District tartan Christie Christie Christie Christie Christie Farquharson McAuslin MacAuslan(D) Buchannon MacAuslan (E) Buchannon Helm Helm(s) Roxburch District He states in this book that "Mac, Gaelic for "son", is the most common element of Scottish and Irish surnames. In both countries, Mc is always an abbreviation of Mac. There is absolutely no truth to the American myth that Mac is Scottish and mc is Irish. Mac used to be abbreviated M' although this spelling is not common now. At times, all three versions can be seen. In an early book on Highland music, the author spelled his own family name three different ways on the first two pages-"MacDonald", "McDonald", and "M' Donald." He also goes on to state that "Spelling differences among names are usually trivial no matter how much pride a person has in a prticular version. Many of our ancestors were illiterate until recently, especially if they were Gaelic speakers." Thought this was interesting since I have been bounced back and forth between the Irish and Scottish lists looking for my McManns. Linda

Thanks to Dennis Ahern of Genireland list for posting answer re: school records in Kanturk area ( 1850-70) I'm certainly going to try it! Pat
I have been reading Irish Civil Registrations and the film will have the actual death information as recorded in the Record Books. Just be certain that you are ordering the records rather than the INDEX to the records. (This is clearly stated in the FHCLC when you order the film). I was wondering if anyone could do a lookup for me for an enumeration district number. I would like to buy a Heritage Quest CD for Hampden County, Massachusetts, but there is more than one. I need the enumeration district number in order to know which CD to purchase. I'm looking for JOHN F. O'ROURKE, of Holyoke, MA. I believe the Soundex code is R-620. Thanks in anticipation of your help. Patsy

Hi, Sorry but I am not up on the History Of Ireland and was wondering what the Young Ireland Movement was. I have not heard of it before. I am trying to find out who Frederick William HIGGINSON's father was and am wondering if some one would have an Alumni book that would cover this period of time. I have checked at our Society but we do not have the correct book. Linking the Irish of Palo Alto Co, IA one record at a time. Obits, census records, military records, newspaper clippings and more! This is where all the Irish are related in one big Family Tree file! http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm Maria Kane McNally was the wife of my half great granduncle! Anyone else related?? Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa March 21, 1935 Mrs. Myles McNally Mrs. Myles McNally, one of the well known aged ladies of Emmetsburg, passed away Thursday of last week. The funeral was held Saturday morning at nine o'clock. Services were conducted in the Assumption church, the pastor, Very Rev. J.T. Finnegan officiating. Interment was in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were nephews of the deceased. They were Wm. McNally; Robert McNally, Paul Kerber, Patrick Doerning, Ervin Joynt and Chas. Kane. Marie Kane was born at Roscommon, Ireland, September 8th, 1844. Hence she was 90 years old at the time of her passing. When four years old she came with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Martin Kane, to the United States. They located in Oconomowoc, [Wisconsin], January 27, 1868. Mr. and Mrs. McNally moved to Iowa in May 1871 locating on a farm in Emmetsburg township. In 1899 they retired and moved to the city. Mr. and Mrs. McNally celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in January 1918. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McNally, three of whom have preceded their mother in death. Mr. McNally passed away January 16, 1929. Surviving are the four daughters-Mrs. M.M. Maher of Hastings, Nebr., Mrs. Larry Murphy of Bonesteel, S.D., Mrs. Dick McNally of Emmetsburg and Mrs. Art Beaudry of St. Cloud, Minn. -and the son, W.T. McNally of this city. A brother, Martin B. Kane, resides at Ayrshire. The passing of Mrs. McNally is to be regretted by the people of this community. She lived to a ripe old age and she was thoroughly acquainted with the early life and the struggles of the pioneers who developed our county from its raw prairies to its presently highly cultivated state. She prided herself in that she likewise endured many of the hardships of pioneer days and that she also was often called upon to make many sacrifices for the common good. As a mother she was kind and indulgent and she went without many of the necessities in order to build with her husband a comfortable estate that her family might never know the meaning of want. She was a kind and obliging neighbor and her acts of generosity were many. She was a faithful member of her church and she lived up to its Christian teachings. During her declining years she was comforted in the thought that she had lived a good life and that she had merited the love and solicitious care of her fond son and daughters as she became more dependent upon them. They, of course, knew her for her real worth. To them her passing is a severe blow. The Democrat unites with many friends in offering sincere sympathy to the bereaved sons and daughters, the brother, and other relatives. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Descendants of Martin Kane (father of Maria Kane) 1 Martin Kane . +Mary Barrett ........ 2 Maria Kane b: 09/08/1843 in Roscommon,Ireland d: 03/13/1935 in Emmetsburg,Iowa Burial: 01/27/1868 St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg,IA ............ +Myles McNally,Jr b: 05/13/1842 in Newport,Mayo,Ireland src: Pension Papers of Myles McNally m: 01/27/1868 in Mapletown,Wisconsin src: 1900 Census-Palo Alto Co. d: 01/16/1929 in Emmetsburg,Iowa ................... 3 Mary Agnes McNally b: 03/29/1871 src: Pension Papers of Myles McNally ....................... +Michael Maher ................... 3 Anna Elizabeth McNally aka: Fanny b: 04/02/1874 in Palo Alto County, Iowa src: Pension Papers of Myles McNally d: 1961 Burial: St John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa ....................... +Lawrence Edward Murphy b: 02/08/1871 in Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa src: Obit m: 11/1887 d: 1938 in Bonesteel, South Dakota src: Obit Burial: St John's Cemetery, Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa ................... 3 John McNally b: 06/11/1876 in Palo Alto County, Iowa src: 1895 Iowa Census-Emmetsburg Township d: 02/03/1879 src: St. John's Cemetery Records ................... 3 William Thomas McNally aka: Thomas b: 08/03/1878 in Palo Alto County, Iowa src: Pension Papers of Myles McNally ....................... +Margaret Collins b: 11/25/1886 in Emmetsburg,Iowa src: Palo Alto Co. Eleanor, I don't have a connection to your surnames, but I am curious about Michael Barry's involvement in the Young Ireland Rising of 1848. My gg-grandfather, JAMES POWER, was "compelled" to leave Ireland because of his participation in the group. He settled in Charleston, SC, where he was a president of the Fenian Brotherhood. JAMES POWER was born 1815 in Co. Kilkenny. I wonder if the old boys escaped together? Where would I find Griffith's Valuation of Ireland, 1848-1864 please? I am looking for a Householder by the name of MICHAEL O'CONNOR....he would have been dead by 1883 but alive in 1856..area in Ireland would be Co Cork...might be Co Kildare but his son was br in Co Cork for sure in 1856. This Householder was the occupation of the father/dead on the Marriage registration of his son Michael to Elizabeth Kane in Oct of 1882... they were married in the Roman Catholic chapel of Allen, reg district Kilmeague, union of Naas in County Kildare. Michale is listed as being from Mylerstown Co Kildare same as Elizabeth is...
