Hi I would like to get a travel plan for Ireland for the coming spring. What I would like to visit is Galway, Limerick, Waterford, possibly Mayo and Roscommon. I need a guide and want to stay at B@b en suite places. The time would be May 22 to June 1. I'm open to suggestions. Jerome J. McDermott
Hello all, I wonder if anyone could give me a bit of advice. In three weeks time my husband and myself are going to Dublin for six days short break, and when he is busy sampling the dark stuff, I want to do some family history. I have very little info, the only thing I have is my gt grandmother was born at Wicklow, and according to my late mother & grandmother the place she came from was Bray. My gt grandmothers name was ELLEN BUCKLEY, born 1845-1850 her father was JOHN BUCKLEY he was a builder by trade. They were Catholic's. What I wanted to know is where is the best place to start, I know my chances of finding anything out are slim, but I would still like to try. I wonder if anyone knows what information there is for this time frame, and any advice at all would be very much appreciated. That,s to everyone in taking time to read my message. Very best wishes Joan.
Thank you for the replies regarding Abby vs. Alice. I had thought they were 2 different people, but wanted to make sure. They are definitely from Leitrim per Abby's papers. My best guess is she was named for Fenagh Abbey, located close to where she was born. None of her 50 years of records in the US list her name as anything but Abby (Abbie or Abbey). Thanks, Julie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Auctions - Buy the things you want at great prices. http://auctions.yahoo.com/
Dear Joan, I would try the library first. See if there is a Family research Center for the county and where it is. (checkthe county on line, I like goto.com and see what comes up). The Town Hall may have records for you. Try to set your ducks in a row before you go to save time. My first cousin twice removed. His mother, Margaret Joynt Nally, was the only child of the ten children of David Joynt and Bridget McDermott to remain in Ireland-Ashfield Demesne, Beagh parish, Galway. Hoping to find links to this family. I will post outline chart in next post. All of the Irish records for this surname are spelled Nelly, but when they came to U.S. all records spelled the surname Nally. Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Thursday, May 3, 1928 P.J. Nally Passes Burial Tuesday Colony of 1856. Lived in Community for 40 Years. Was Recently Paralyzed. P.J. Nally, whose condition was mentioned in the last issue of the Democrat, died at his home in this city last Saturday night. He suffered a stroke of paralysis Wednesday, another the following day and a third Saturday. He never regained consciousness. The funeral was held Tuesday morning. Services were conducted in the Assumption church, the rector, Rev. J.G. Murtagh officiating. Father Murtagh spoke at some length of man's helplessness in many ways. From early childhood until death he is constantly in need of God's guidance and assistance. He is taught his religious duties by the aid of divine revelation and the teachings of Christ who made the supreme sacrifice on the cross that all might attain eternal salvation. The good pastor found Mr. Nally strongly attached to his faith and eager to comply with his religious obligations. The burial was in the family lot in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were Wm. H.J. Steiner, John J. Steil, W.I. Brannagan, Joe Mulroney, W.T. McNally and David Joynt. A large number of old friends were in attendance. Patrick Joseph Nally, son of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Nally, was born in the county of Galway, Ireland, March 17, 1866. His age was 62. When he was 16 he came to the United States. He was in the employ of M.F. Kerwick as a tradesman for many years. Some time ago he engaged in business for himself. He was married in this city August 14, 1888 to Miss Jane Nicholson. Two sons and two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Nally. All survive. They are Mrs. M.T. [Mary] Anderson of Fremont, Nebraska, W.H. [William Harold] of New York City, R.J. [Raymond J] of Chicago and Miss Veronica, who has been living at Omaha. Mrs. Nally passed away in this city two years ago. Mr. Nally's death is also mourned by one sister-Mrs. P.J. Collins [Catherine] of Emmetsburg, and by three brothers-James and Thomas of Emmetsburg and Ed of Kansas City. The writer knew Mr. Nally for more than 40 years and always found him genial, ready, friendly and off handed. He kept well posted on general affairs. He was a capable worker and he had long and exacting experience as a tradesman. He was a loving father and his zeal for the welfare of his sons and his daughters was warmly reciprocated by them. They grew useful and honorable members of society and all are taking successfully and with honor their places in business and social affairs. Mr. and Mrs. Nally both passed away at a comparatively early age in life. It must have been comforting to them as death called them from their earthly scenes to realize that those whom they were leaving were so well prepared to push onward in life's journey without their guidance or assistance. They have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their sorrow. Cathy Joynt Labath Researching Joynt/Joint surname anywhere, anytime http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmlabath/joynt.htm
The earliest RC church records for Bray are not on microfilm so you will not be able to search them in either Dublin or the Family History Library. The Presbytery, Herbert Road, Bray, Co. Wicklow is the address. Make an appointment with the parish priest. Do a frequency and distribution of the surnames by using The Householders Index, (FHLC#919,001-7 or in the National Library of Ireland) a surname index of tax records in Griffith's Primary Valuation and Tithe Applotment Books or the CD-ROM Index to Griffith's Valuation. Griffith's identifies people between 1840 and 1864. Tithe Applotment covers the period of 1820 to 1840. This gets you to the parish level. These records give the names of the individuals (heads of households only), where they lived, the acreage, and the value of the land and building. These records do not give specific information about ages, birthplaces, and other members of the family. However, they point to the parish to search for baptismal and marriage information. The National Library has a Genealogy Office which you can visit. Many of the usual records are held there with people to help you. On your own, go to familysearch.org and search for grandmother's name and follow up on any likely responses. Then, proceed to the Family History Library and search the Catalog for Bray, Wicklow, Ireland to see what those holdings are. Go to The Heraldic Artists Ltd. at 3 Nassau Street (near the National Library) to browse their inventory. You can take the DART from Dublin to Bray. Have lunch in a pub and talk with the people. Walk around downtown Dublin. . .St. Stephen's Green, St. Patrick's, Dublin Castle, General Post Office, Grafton Street and Bewley's for people watching. I read this advice from a young man, "Grab a guidebook, a round-trip ticket to Ireland and go. Hang with the locals go to a local pub and ride public transport or walk rather than taking taxis. Rent rooms in bed and breakfasts. Be patient, flexible, and smile." Enjoy. Abby would be a very unusual forename for a Roman Catholic in the Leitrim area. It was one of the pseudo-translations used for the Gaelic name Gobnait in the area of West Cork - Kerry - Limerick. Outside of that region it was almost unheard of in R.C. families. Aliciam is certainly Alice. I wonder whether your source for "Abby" was oral or written. Is it possible that you misread "Abby" for "Ally"? The latter was a pet form of Alice. Paul Gorry What's What in Irish Genealogy http://indigo.ie/~gorry
I wouldn't have thought that Abby was an alias for Alice, but then I must admit to not being an expert when it comes to R.C. registers. However, in my experience Abby is short for Abigail, which can also be written and known as Deborah & Gobinet. Paul Gorry would know far more about this than I. There was no Subject heading, so I deleted it, not knowing who it was from or why they would be writing to me. I do this with all non-subject emails. If bonjon was responding to my query, please send again with a subject. Please for all our sakes use a specific subject when sending email messages. Thanks. Genealogically yours, plewie

Linking the Irish of Palo Alto Co, IA one record at a time. Obits, census records, military records, newspaper clippings and more! This is where all the Irish are related in one big Family Tree file! http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm A search at the Palo Alto Co, IA site for "Carmody" yielded 11 other matches in newspaper abstracts and census records. I am not related. Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, July 20, 1921 MRS. THOS. CARMODY DIES AT AGE OF 91 She Came to Palo Alto in 1882. Funeral Was Held Thursday. Last week we made brief mention of the death of Mrs. Ellen Carmody which occurred at her home in Chicago on Monday at 9:55 p.m. She was very ill for twelve weeks. The remains reached Emmetsburg early Wednesday morning and were taken to the home of her son, James Carmody. The funeral was held Thursday forenoon. Services were conducted at the Assumption church. Monsignor P.F. Farrelly celebrating a requiem high mass. Many old neighbors and friends were in attendance. The burial was in the family lot in St. John's cemetery. The pall bearers were M.F. Brennan, E.J. Higgins, J.T. Maguire, John O'Brien, Frank Hand and W.I. Branagan. Ellen Boland was born in the parish of Capamore, county of Limerick, Ireland, March 28, 1830. Her age was 91. She was educated in the Tower Hill National school. She came to the United States in April 1850. June 28, 1852, she was united in marriage at Lyons, New York to Thomas Carmody. Mr. and Mrs. Carmody came to Great Oak township, Palo Alto County in 1882. Mr. Carmody died June 2, 1896. Mrs. Carmody moved to Emmetsburg in 1898. She and her daughter, Miss Nellie, lived in a home in the Third ward. In 1916, they moved to Chicago where they subsequently resided. Mrs. Carmody is survived by two sons and two daughters. They are James Carmody of this city, Mrs. Nellie Neville of St. Louis, Missouri, Miss Nellie Carmody and Thomas Carmody, who is a cashier of the Whittemore State bank. All were present at the funeral. Mrs. Carmody had twenty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Carmody was a woman of deep earnestness and she took an active interest in all matters that she had the privilege and the time to consider. Her career of almost a century was marked by faithful, tireless, conscientious devotion to what she believed to be right and by the strict observance of the precepts of her holy church. Her sympathies, like most of the women of her race, were with the afflicted and downtrodden. She knew well the sad history of the land of her birth and she was anxious to learn of the success of the movement for independence before she would be called upon to answer the final summons. This privilege, however, was denied her. She was a solicitous, provident mother and her zeal for the welfare of the members of her household was equalled only by her tireless efforts to give them the best opportunities that her means could afford. She was warm hearted, friendly and neighborly and she enjoyed through life the good will and the sympathy in her various undertakings of those who were close to her socially and in general community affairs. While she had the loyal, the heartfelt affection of her two sons and daughters, circumstances were such that her youngest daughter, Miss Nellie, was required to give special attention, in her declining years, to her physical and other home comforts. No daughter ever gave more unselfishly years of patient devotion to the many needs of an aged parent, and none will, we are sure, treasure fondly the memory of a sacrifice more nobly or more unselfishly performed. The surviving members of the family, whom we have during our long residence in Emmetsburg counted among our warm personal friends, have our sincere sympathy in the sorrow that has come to them Cathy Joynt Labath Researching in Ireland, Joynt, Brennan, McNally See also some of my other sites: A Little Bit of Ireland http://home.att.net/~labaths/ Palo Alto Co, IA USGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm Scott Co, IA USGenWeb Project http://www.rootsweb.com/~iascott/scott.htm Joynt/Joint Family Chronicles- One Name Study http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmlabath/joynt.htm Newspaper Abstracts http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/IA/PaloAlto/ http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/IA/Scott/ http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/Ireland/
This month's February Irish Obituary Update will be sent in several parts, over several days. The reason is that there are now many more obituaries. Obituary Daily Times, from which I have permission to extract Irish surname obituaries and forward to this list, is now carrying obituaries from a Cork daily newspaper, The Irish Examiner. The obituaries focus on County Cork, but also include some from neighboring Counties Kerry and Limerick. The Irish Examiner is now on-line, and besides current local and national Irish news stories, it carries obituaries, both current and archived, which are searchable by surname. You will need to register to access this information, but registration is free of charge.
