Hello, I have found a record of Patrick O'Rourke as "immigrating" in 1865 to the USA. This info was on a census record so it is only as true as the person who gave the info had knowledge BUT could someone help me with info on what ports in the US I should search. As I recall there were many more "customs ports" in 1865 for immigrants than there are now. It is "likely" (myth/oral history) that he came to Calif by way of Boston, but we are not sure. Are there ships records where I came search? Lynn Combs Reseaching: IRE: Crosby, Duffy, Donovan (Bandon, Cork, parish unk), Murphy, Ryan (Tipp., no city or Parish known), O'Rourke. (also Combs (Devon/London), Kirk (scotland-antrim, NIRE))
Good Evening: Could anyone tell me if census records date back to the 1830's in Ireland? If not, what was the first year for census record keeping? Is there any information available to the public that can be searched on-line? Thank you. Harold and Pat Akers acsc@interlog.com
Dr. Edward MacLysaght in his book "Surnames of Ireland" says: JOYNT, a Huguenot name (Fr. le joint) slim, graceful. Formerly well-known in both Cos. Limerick and Mayo. Family lore also says we are of Huguenot origin, descended from William Joynt, Sheriff of Limerick c. 1659. http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cmlabath/joynt7.htm I have not yet found proof of my Joynt/Joint family being of Huguenot origin; however, in the pursuit of proof I have accumulated various documents and I have transcribed the following: The Irish Pensioners of William III's Huguenot Regiments, 1702. >From Huguenot Society of London Proceedings, Vol. 6, No. 3, Nov. 1899 1. Birth Records in the Family History Library Catalog are for 1864-1881 and 1900-1955 (note the gaps 1882-1899 and 1913-1930 in the FHLC but not in Dublin). Some pages are missing from 1869: p. 49-50 (gap between Carroll, John, of Dungannon and Carvill, James Richard, of Limerick; and all pages following Thompson, Elenor Jane, of Belfast. Certificates for births, marriages and deaths are housed in Dublin: General Register Office, Joyce House, 8-11 Lombard St. East, Dublin 2 Foreign applications: Fees are payable in Irish pound currency, Draft I.E.P. or Euro checks or bank drafts drawn on an Irish Bank, made payable to the Registrar General. Sterling checks, Postal Orders, US$ checks are accepted. The minimum amount for a check drawn on a non-Irish bank is 12.70 Euro. I bundle my requests so that I meet the minimum fee. G'Day~~ I'm at a brickwall and not sure where to turn next. My grandfather Thomas John O'SULLIVAN was born 22-July-1894. The only factual information I have is that his parents were Edward O'Sullivan and Bridget (nee O'Sullivan) O'Sullivan. My problem is that Thomas' birthday falls in the civil records gap. Does anybody have any advice on how to locate his parents info? Or does anyone have a link on this family? *Please* be aware that any "naming pattern" for any country is only a guide established after the fact and was -not- written in stone, nor were people forced to follow it. People named their children whatever they wanted to. Informal studies I believe have proven that the Irish "naming pattern" is not followed as many times as it is, so use it with a large grain of salt. The danger in taking it as "gospel" is I hear from people all the time who say " I thought I found my ___ but since they don't fit the naming pattern I ignored that information". there is a printed version of the naming pattern on the Fianna site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~fianna <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints
Records are kept at port of -arrival- not port of departure. You will need to search the port of arrival records. Depending on where this is, this can be either easy or difficult. In that time frame generally it will be difficult. In the US you can use _The Famine Immigrants_ book (available at local genealogy libraries, not the FHC) as a -guide only- as even the authors admit to mistakes, omissions etc, but you will be wise to confirm anything you find with a peek at the actual ship manifest OR just use indexes to arrivals for that port of arrival. Many ports have indexes in that time frame, even NY, but depending on the surname it is very difficult to tell one person from another. On my Helpful Hints page there are sections on how to search NY arrivals and other US ports. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints
Hi Listers: Recently several people have asked about detailed maps. While I'm sure there must be other places in the US to get them, one place I know (and one with a website to learn more) is the Irish Genealogical So, Intl. PO Box 16585 St Paul, MN 55116 The maps are $8.00 each, plus shipping of $1.00 for 1st map and .50 ea add. map. You can find details of which map covers where at their website: www.rootsweb.com/~irish Follow the links: IGSI Resources> IGSI Bookstore> Maps for Sale For Fermanagh I recommend the Discovery Series Maps which are the most detailed--and are beautiful! They include lots of detail--cairns, graveyards, names of townlands (though not townland borders) monuments, almost everything down to buildings and dirt tracks--everything but the cows and the chickens! Incidentally, the GSI also publishes a terrific quarterly newsletter and is an organization worth joining. Have fun! Janet C-S (PS: You may get more than one copy of this if you are on several lists.)

Good afternoon......I am trying to find the arrival date from Ireland of William and Alice Lynch. The date could be as early as 1838-9. They arrived in America with two children ,Ann ( 4)and Martin ( 2 ). are there records of families leaving Ireland in that time frame? Thank you for any help... The easiest way to find mailing lists and information on individual counties in Ireland is to go to the IrelandGenWeb project http://www.irelandgenweb.com and look at the chart which will list each county page, mailing list, and query board. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints
Thank you everyone for responding with so many good definitions. for "furnas". Since so many words and names are abbreviated in Irish records, the first of the following seems to fit in with the medieval record that I was reading. Several people also suggested #1. Go raibh maith (thank you) for all your excellent ideas. 1. It is short for furnishings. That is, the medieval equivalent of saddle and harness. Those items were very expensive in those days. 2. My Latin Dictionary gives "fornus" and "furnus" as meaning "oven". The quotes could be because they knew they were using a Latin term. Slan go foill, Margaret (Mairead)

The Slieve/Sliabh Luachra "area" is, as you mention, the area along the border between the two counties, in the Rathmore - Gneevgullia area. What has always bothered me is the "sliabh"- part; because there aren't any mountains there. Farther south, we have the Paps and some others, but they're not know as Sliabh Luachra either.
