Janet, No, the records of Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn are held by the diocese and you have to pay quite a bit for them ($50 a plot now if you want full info including death cert #s and dates of interment). There are no plans to publish them in any form according to the lady who runs the office there. Most of my Irish line in Brooklyn are buried there, and so I deal with the ladies there in the office quite often. They are very nice, but this is the policy of the Diocese. Even if you go in person (as I had hired someone to do) you can't just view the plot info, you have to pay for it. But if you get a plot listing, it is wonderful... that's how I filled in so much on my McGlynn's... and how I'm hoping to do my Farrell's there. Anyone who's interested can go to http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt/paternalirish and see some photos and plot listings of my McGlynns in Holy Cross for an idea of what you get (of course that was when it was only $25 for a plot listing... I haven't gotten any recently since the charges went up.. tho I -think- you can get two plot listings for the $50, but there's no guarantee of how many are in a plot. I've had them have 2 people and then I"ve had them have 9 people). If anyone is doing any serious research in Brooklyn, I'd advise looking at the death indexes for Brooklyn to find some dates and some of those registers are filmed, but I found some of my relatives in there and when I asked Holy Cross they could only say "buried here but no data" or " no data" even tho the Death Book said they were buried in HC. Of course that is the early days .. 1850ish to 1870. <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints

Good Morning Arlene, You are an angel for doing these lookups! I'm looking for my grgrgrandparents John CARROTHERS b 1788 and wife Eleanor (surname unknown)b 1794 in Fermanagh. They were protestants. They had two children before they immigrated to Ohio between 1816 and 1820. The children born in Fermanagh were Susanna b November 18, 1814 and Elizabeth b 1816. John was a farmer and they lived in the parish of Aghavea or Aghalurcher, County Fermanagh. Any help would be most appreciated. This family has been my brick wall for quite a long time. The Times Davenport, Scott, Iowa Saturday, Oct. 11, 1890 JUMPED THEIR BAIL Dillon and O'Brien Take Sudden Leave of Ireland EACH HAS FORFEITED HEAVY BONDS It is Rumored That They Are on Their Way to America, But Will Return to Serve Their Sentences. After a Tour of This Country. BALFOUR BAFFLED. DUBLIN, Oct. 11- The case of the Crown against William O'Brien and John Dillon, who are charged with conspiracy in inciting tenants to pay their rents, was again called in the magistrate's court at Tipperary Friday. Messrs. O'Brien and Dillon have hitherto been present at all the hearings, but when the court opened they did not put in an appearance. Both the defendants are members of the committee which was appointed at the conference of Irish Nationalists held in Dublin last Friday to visit America for the purpose of soliciting aid for the nationalist cause and a rumor is current that they have forfeited their bail of £1,000 each in the conspiracy case, and that they sailed Thursday for the United States. There is little, if any, doubt that the objective point of Dillon and O'Brien is the United States. It is known, however, that they have avoided the ordinary routes of travel between the two countries, and up to the present hour absolutely nothing is known of the manner in which they succeeded in eluding the watchfulness of the large police and military force gathered in and about Tipperary. The escape has excited great admiration and enthusiasm in the ranks of the Nationalists both in England and Ireland, while the Government is confused by the readiness with which officers, cautioned to be especially on the alert have been hoodwinked. The action of Dillon and O'Brien indicates that the two great Nationalist leaders intend to carry out the plan of operations outlined by them a few weeks ago when they said they would come to America, forfeit their bond, and allow sentence to be passed in their absence. Then, after an extensive speech-making campaign in America, they will return here and serve out their sentence. When court opened a demand was made for the production of the bodies of John Dillon and William O'Brien. Compliance with the demand being impossible, the court ordered that their sureties come in and make good the amount of their bonds. Thereupon Mr. Healy arose and submitted to the court that the sureties had fulfilled their obligations with the appearance before the bar on the first day of the trial of Mr. Dillon and Mr. O'Brien. Mr. Healy argued that the crown having in certain particulars amended the original charges against his clients the bail could no longer be held as good. The magistrates decided that the charges after amendment remained substantially as originally made. A certificate of non-appearance was then attached to the bail bonds, and the court adjourned to enable counsel to consider what steps the prosecution would take in view of the complications created by the escape of the prisoners. Warrants have been issued for the apprehension of the absentees. Detectives have boarded all out-going steamers and searched in vain for Dillon and O'Brien. They are convinced that the two are already on the way to America. It is possible they say, that Dillon and O'Brien sailed on a yacht and boarded a steamer outside of Queenstown harbor. The amount of the bail bond will be paid by the National League. Mr. T.P. O'Connor's paper (The Star) says 'that Messrs. Dillon and O'Brien went to Waterford, anf from there to Havre Wednesday, and that they proceeded from the latter port to New York.' New York, Oct. 11- Irishmen in this city have received word that Messrs. O'Brien and Dillon went from Dublin across the channel to Holly Head, thence to London and Havre, where they boarded a Hamburg-American vessel. Sunday night a meeting will be held to make arrangements for their reception.
Linking the Irish of Palo Alto Co, IA one record at a time. Obits, census records, military records, newspaper clippings and more! This is where all the Irish are related in one big Family Tree file! Today added 1900 Federal Census for Walnut Township. http://www.rootsweb.com/~iapaloal/paloalto.htm This is the obit of the husband of my great grand-aunt, Sarah McNally Kane. Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, March 26, 1926 Little Corporal J.J. Kane Called Made Memorable Record at Vicksburg. In Service Four Years. Funeral to Be Held Tomorrrow at 9 O'clock John J Kane, who was very ill for a couple of weeks, died at his home in this city early Monday morning. The funeral will take place tomorrow. Services will be conducted at St. Thomas church. There will be a military funeral. Mr. Kane was born in the county of Roscommon, Ireland, on Christmas day, 1842. His age was 83. He was three years old when his parents came to the United States. They landed at New Orleans. His mother died at that place. His father and family located at Oconomowoc, Wisconsin in 1855. Mr. Kane grew to manhood in that locality. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted in Company I, Seventeenth Wisconsin Infantry serving during the entire war. He fought in the battles of Corinth, Champion Hills, kenesaw Mountains, Atlanta, and Savannah. He made a memorable record in the siege of Vicksburg which lasted forty-seven days. He was known in his regiment as "Little Corporal Kane," as his height was only five feet, four inches. on May 19, 1863, during the Vicksburg siege, he was chosen to carry the colors. Several of his color guard companions were killed in the battle. "Little Corporal Kane" picked up his regimental flag and also an Irish flag belonging to the Irish members of his regiment and dashed forward openly and boldly defying the rebels. The flag of Wisconsin was also borne to the front. Many shots were fired but he never faltered and he was not injured. He was made a sergeant for his bravery. He was under General Sherman during the historic march to the sea and was promoted to the rank of second lieutenant. he attended the grand review at Washington in May, 1865. President Johnson and Generals Grant and Sherman were on the reviewing stand. Mr. Kane knew General Sheridan well and fought under him at Corinth in 1862. Sheridan was at that time only a captain. After this battle Sheridan was made a colonel. General Sheridan was only five feet, five inches tall. He was known as "Little Phil." At the close of the war, Mr. Kane returned to Wisconsin, where he was married at Mapleton, on April 17, 1871, to Sarah McNally. A short time later he came to Emmetsburg and located on a farm west of this city. Mrs. Kane arrived the following November. Mr. and Mrs. Kane went to Camp Crook, South Dakota, some years ago, remaining for a season or two. Later they returned to this community. They bought a home in this city in 1908. Mrs. Kane died in February 1924. Mr. Kane is survived by five sons and five daughters. The sons are John of Cando, North Dakota, Ed and Chas. of this place and Robert and Joseph of Bowman, South Dakota. The daughters are Mrs. E.J. Bradley of Graettinger, Mrs. Britt Catern of Camp Crook, South Dakota, Mrs. James Dower of Marengo, and Mrs. Emil Dahl of Rehm, North Dakota. A son, M.P., died at Clinton, Iowa, a few months ago and a daughter, Miss Katherine, passed away in 1919. In the death of Mr. Kane, a true defender of our country in one of its darkest hours and a sterling citizen has been called to his reward. He was a lover of his home and family. He was faithful as a husband, dutiful and provident as a father and warm hearted and staunch as a friend. He was invariably good natured and was among the most ardent of optimists. He ahd no time for the pessimist or the knocker. He was strictly attentive to his church obligations but he had due regard for the views and the rights of members of all creeds. In this respect, he was a typical American. He had good natural ability and with better opportunites earlier in life, he would most likely have distinguished himself in some professional line of activity. His long and honorable record as a soldier and as a citizen shows that our republic can, in time of need, look forward with confidence to prompt, cheerful and capable responses in every walk of life, whenever there are earnest appeals for service and devotion. The sorrowing relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of the resident of our community and county in their deep sorrow. His G.A.R. comrades, only five of whom remain, doubtless feel a keen personal loss of companionship in the passing of Lieutenant Kane, better known as their genial, witty, diplomatic, "Little Corporal" who so bravely carried the colors forward in the face of deadly fire in the siege of Vicksburg, on May 19, 1863, less than two monts before the decisive battle of Gettysburg. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Descendants of John J Kane 1 John J Kane b: 12/25/1842 in Roscommon, Ireland src1: Palo Alto Co. Catherine's marriage certificate to William Edmund Waters in 1892, shows them living at 18 Gannock Street, Edgehill Wavertree. Catherine died Nov 1, 1937 at 42 Belmont Rd., Liverpool (Hospital). Nothing on the 1881 census seems to fit. No record of her birth in Liverpool, so assume Ireland to be correct. Haven't found a Catherine with a father Thomas there either. She must be out there somewhere! Any new and unusual places to look? Does someone out there hold the magic key? Gargan is not all that common - you'd think I'd have found her by now! I have a number of addresses for Catherine (nee Gargan) and William Waters after 1892, which I can provide, but can't seem to find anything earlier. Thank you, Sharon
I am wondering if anyone would have a copy of the book titled Feakle - A History, as I am seeking a particular reference from the same ? many thanks Jenny Fawcett
Hi all, If you know of any sites which you have found helpful in your Meath research, if you have a homepage with a Meath connection, if you have any knowledge of resources which would benefit Meath researchers..... Please go to the Meath IGW page http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/meath and view what's there, and then contact me if you wish to submit or add any links or sites. Remember, this is YOUR page, and in order to make it helpful to you, I really would appreciate your input and assistance. Thanks, Maura County Meath IGW host (and Waterford too!) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints
I'm very pleased to see that some web pages have created links to the Cashel & Emly Pages. Some of the notes added to some of the records indicate that a number of "connections" to other researchers have already been made. If you have saved a link to the Rootsweb Cashel & Emly Records Search Page, please update it to the one shown below my signature. The file name is now changed to end with "index.html" instead of "index.htm" >From now on the old link will not work. I am now able to edit the pages for Rootsweb Donors names and e-mail contact addresses for the Cashel & Emly database. I have updated a couple of donors new e-mail addresses which have recently changed. If any other donors have name / e-mail address corrections, please send them to me. I have also changed the name at the top of the Donor page from "The United Kingdom and Ireland" to read simply "Ireland" since access form this site does not search through records from the United Kingdom, only Ireland. My access site is an Irish site which emphasizes is intended to remind one of the unique nature of these records. If you want to do a search which combines your Irish search with records of other nations, you can do it through some of the other Rootsweb sites, not this one. The full listing of NYC (Manhattan) Catholic Churches is on my Helpful Hints page, url below. They are listed by date of establishment and alphabetically. (The pages may not look great right now, a bit off, but that's on my "to do" list ) <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Maura Petzolt mpetzolt2@webtv.net <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> SHAMROCK ROOTS homepage http://community.webtv.net/shamrockroots/SHAMROCKROOTS Helpful Hints for Successful Searching http://community.webtv.net/mpetzolt2/helpfulhints
