    1. [SH] Dooley/doorley family in Creva
    2. Cathleen Hanville
    3. I recently recieved this information from a cousin. Any information would be great. The DOOLEY (DOORLEY) FAMILY The original name of the Dooley’s was Doorley. It was changed to Dooley by my grandfather or my great grandfather. The family lived in a place called CREVA which I believe was located somewhere near the Town of Shannonbridge in County OFFALY. Shannonbridge is found on the Shannon River and is between the larger towns of Birr and Athlone. It is in the center of Ireland about 70 miles west of Dublin. I could not find Creva on any maps, even the 1:250,000 Ireland Ordnance Survey series of 1979. I do not know my great grandfather’s first name. My great grandmother was a McManus. Their children are: Pete - stayed in Ireland; never married. Bridget - ‘Bidey’ ; stayed in Ireland; never married. Michael -settled in Summit; died in 1948 at age 75; children were Thomas, Edward, James, William, John, and Mary. (Mary Dooley is the source of much of this information). Jim - settled in Troy, NY (Margaret, John, Mary, Helen) John - settled in Summit; died in September, 1928. Edward - ‘Ned”; came to America; later returned to Ireland and died there. (Francis, John, Margaret, Mary) Margaret - settled in Summit - married Pat Egan ?? Mamie - lived in Summit; stayed with the Flemings; never married; died on Christmas Eve in 1932 or 33. Michael, Jim, John and Edward emigrated to America in the 1890’s, either as a group or individually. I have no knowledge of when or how Margaret and Mamie came. Apparently the family in Ireland died out. John Dooley married Johanna Sullivan. She came from the Kilarney area. John died in September,1928 and Johanna in February, 1946. Their children are: Peg, Catherine (Kit), Marie, Ed, Bill, Joe, John

    3. Sound methodology of research is to work back in time. Thus, the, naturalization is the place to look. There was no requirement for an, immigrant to become naturalized and many never bothered. However, most, immigrants did become naturalized. The 1900, 1910, and 1920 Federal, censuses all have categories indicating citizenship status. The 1920, census is the only one that gives the actual year of naturalization. Many naturalization records have been microfilmed and are available through the Family History Library. ALWAYS check the Family History Library Catalog before writing to the court. If you do not know the court where the naturalization took place work from "specific to general." Check for naturalization records in the local city or county court first, then check state and federal courts. Look under [STATE] [COUNTY] - NATURALIZATION AND CITIZENSHIP There are also separate guides to naturalization records in some states.
