Hi, I was wondering how I would go about finding where my ancestors were from? So far I only have tidbits of information and no sources, all the information I have is what has been passed down, I have no documentation that I can find. My ancestors, came from Co. Fermanagh, Ireland, around 1842 (after the marriage of my 3rd gr. grandparents), went to Canada, the eldest, my 4th grt. grandparents, only stayed in Ontario Canada for 3 yrs. before moving to Ohio, USA. The Son (my 3rd grt. grandfather) stayed in canada to produce 11 children, before following his father, to Ohio, where it seems the majority of their descendants stayed. Now I can trace them to backwards to Canada, but after that I cannot find anything, not even a townland (?) or parish (?) or anything inside Fermanagh. I cannot find where my 3rd grt. grandparents married, or lived. I do have birthdates, for nearly everyone even 3rd. grt. grandfathers siblings. The last name of my forefathers is Jordan, the farthest back! I have is Andrew Jordan being born in 1797, Andrew Jordan married Sarah Catherine Steward/t, they had 9 children. Charles Andrew Jordan (first child or Andrew and Sarah) born 1818, married Margaret Irwin/Irvin (sp) about 1841. After they were married is when they left for Canada (on which ship I have no clue). If anyone thinks that they could give advice or think they could help, I would be greatly appricieative. :) I have been searching for nearly 2 yrs. now with no luck. Thank You for Your Time, Billie

I am not related. Emmetsburg Democrat Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa Wednesday, February 2, 1916 THE LATE MRS MICHAEL ROACH The funeral Was Held Friday, Services Conducted at Assumption Church Last week we made brief mention of the rather unexpected death of Mrs. Michael Roach, which occurred at her home in this city Tuesday evening of last week. The funeral was held Friday. The services were conducted at Assumption church, Rev. W Veit celebrating a requiem high mass. There was a large attendance of old friends and neighbors, despite the inclemency of the weather. The day was exceptionally cold. The pall bearers were F.P. Brady, J.P. Jennings, James P. Jones, Edward McNally, Thos. Cullen and W.I. Branagan. The burial was in St. John's cemetery. Catherine Markham was born at Kurlfin, in the county of Clare, Ireland, May 5, 1847. When she was four years old her parents came to the United States. They lived in the vicinity of Iowa Falls, New York until 1855, when they came west and settled in Clayton county, this state. Miss Markham was united in marriage at Elkader, Iowa to Mr. Michael Roach, in October, 1865. Mr. and Mrs. Roach resided in Clayton county until 1885, when they came to Palo Alto county and settled on a farm in Independence township. In 1895 they bought a farm in Kossuth county, a short distance north of Whittemore. In December, 1901, they came to Emmetsburg and bought a home in the Third Ward, where they subsequently resided. Mr. Roach is survived by her husband, two sons and seven daughters. one son, Clement, owns a drug store at Rock Rapids, Iowa and the second son, Earl, owns a barber shop at Wyonet, Illinois. The daughters are Mrs. W.H. Coonan, Mrs. Peter Daily, Mrs. Celia Hand, Mrs. J.R. Martin, and Mrs. Curt Beck of Emmetsburg, Mrs. James Pender of Waterloo, and Mrs. Wm. Pender of Dubuque. All the members of the family were present at the funeral. There are also two sisters, Mrs. P. Larkin of Denver, Colorado, and Mrs. John Roach of Elkader. An only living brother, James Markham, lives at Elkader, Iowa. Among the relatives who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Michael, Joseph, and William Roach and Misses Bid and Cloe Roach, all of Elkader. The death of Mrs. Roach removes from local domestic circles one of the most esteemed women of our community. Like most of the good, old ladies of her race and her time, she toiled hard during her early life and her more vigorous years and she came to Emmetsburg to spend the closing days of her long and active career among the members of her respected family and her devoted friends. She seemed rugged and hearty and for twelve years she and her good husband enjoyed the peace and the comforts of retirement in their substantial home on the south side. Their yearnings for worldly things were modest and their important cares were few. When the weather was pleasant, they were, on week days, frequent attendants at the morning masses at the Assumption church, wisely and fervently seeking, in their declining years, the spiritual nourishment which, from childhood, had given them strength and hope in many a trying hour. Mrs. Roach was always lively and pleasant and she believed in looking on the bright side of life. She had a word of good cheer for the discouraged and was every ready to give a helping hand to those who needed assistance. She was prized as a neighbor at Elkader and Whittemore long before coming to Emmetsburg. She was a home woman and she continued, until death called her, the frugal habits she had uninterruptedly pursued through life.... 1901 and 1911 are the ONLY complete Census of Ireland Almost all of the original returns of the 1821 Census were destroyed in the fire in 1922, with only a few volumes surviving for parts of Counties Cavan, Fermanagh, Galway, Meath and Offaly (King's County). 1831 Census Fragments Most of the fragments relate to Co. Derry. 1841 Census Fragments Only the original returns for the parish of Killeshandra in Co.Cavan survived the fire in 1922. There are, however, a number of transcripts of the original returns because the returns from 1841 & 1851 were used in the twentieth century as proof of age when the Old Age Pension was introduced. The most significant collections are the Walsh-Kelly notebooks, which also abstract parts of the 1821, 1831 and 1851 returns and relate particularly to south Kilkenny, and the Thrift Abstracts in the National Archives. 1851 Census Fragments Most of the surviving returns relate to parishes in Co. Antrim and a few in Co Fermanagh 1861 & 1871 Census Fragments Virtually nothing survives. The only transcripts are found in the Catholic registers of Enniscorthy, Co.Wexford, (1861), and Drumcondra and Loughbraclen, Co. Meath (1871). Folks, Please consider the following items: 1. The "new" database at Ellis Island, according to the persons in charge of it interviewed on NBC Nightly News last night, will not be fully operational for over a month. Therefore, it's not accessible all the time, nor is it -working- all the time. Please do not send "what am I doing wrong" questions to this (or any other) list. We can't help you! 2. Also, please understand that even they admit this database, as with any database which is transcribed by human beings who make mistakes, contains - inaccuracies, ommissions and wrong information-. Again, this was stated last night on the news. Anyone who has looked at those manifests know how hard they are to work with, and they admitted that they left out many transcripts that were unreadable. 3. Also, be aware that this time period largely consists of a time that is -already- soundexed and fairly easy to use. There are only a few years in this database that are non-indexed already. Now, saying all this I am not trying to be a wet blanket, but just as when the LDS website went online, I can already forsee a flurry of questions on this list and others about "why isn't it working" "why didn't I find my person" etc. This list is -not- the place to ask those questions. If you have questions, email the Ellis Island people about them, but only after you consider the items in this email about it's limitations. PLEASE do not get into a big discussion on these lists about it! Yes, these lists are for genealogy, but for -Irish- genealogy, and long threads on this are going to cause problems. Thank you for your consideration. Hi all, this si roughly the text sent to another list: couldn't help myself - stuck around to see what would happen - it seems that the site may be written for people who love frames and has lots of graphics that slow down the process? - poor old internet is a little tired when it gets to Melbourne Australia? anyhow - the address again: http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/search/passSearch.asp? I found stuff after searching for Robert Jones: Exact Matches (991) Name of Passenger Residence Arrived Age on Arrival 1. Robert Jones L'pool 1892 27 2. Rbt. Jones Lpl 1892 22 3. Robert Jones 1892 24 4. Robert Jones 1892 29 5. Robt. Jones L'pool. 1892 28 I didn't look up all the bob joneses - so it seems it is working good luck Robert
My understanding is that the site will not be fully "up" until tomarrow. Sandra

all i get is the advertisment but nothing else. several different addresses have been listed by folks on line but all i get is page can not be displayed. where did i go wrong?
I got on!!!!! I asked for just the surname and got 5 although I have 25 in my database from the microfilm of the index. Only 2 of the 5 matched my database. I was timed out before I could go any further so am trying again and again. I think Janet has the right idea but it is not the middle of the night all over the world. It's only 3:30 PDT so I'm up against all of the East coast people just getting home and trying to get on. Maybe they will go to bed. The Irish are in bed. The Australians are tomorrow already! Dear Gwen, Thank you very much for your help plus the tips on how to put in dates ect. I made a typing error in NACY it should be NANCY but the rest of the names are correct I got them off the shipping list in the Nelson paper which was the port of entry. Thank you for the offer to contact you direct, I might do that if I get more confused than I already am. Bonnie
Someone on another list sent this information to us yesterday and I thought you would find it interesting and helpful. Ellis Island records are going to be available on line. > Effective April 17,2001 a database housing about 22 million records of immigrant arrivals through NY Harbor from 1892 to 1924 will be made available to the public on the internet from records at Ellis Island NY. Records were extracted from nearly 3,700 rolls of microfilm, which were then entered into the database. The records can provide information such as an immigrants date of arrival, age, ethnicity, port of departure and the ship that brought him to the United States. This was all done with the help of more than 12,000 volunteers from the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who worked about 5.6 million hours since 1993 to accomplish this feat. Access to the data base is free at : www.ellisislandrecords.org From "The Long Island Newsday" newspaper Monday 4/16/01>
