    1. [SH] William A. / John Smart - Old Bridge, Meath, Ireland
    2. I am looking for information on my great grandfather (William Alexander) Smartt (Smart) and my great-great grandparents John Smart and Margaret Anne Prott. William A. Smart (later Smartt, somehow an extra 't' was added) b. 8/22/1876 -Old Bridge, Meath, Ireland . Arrived in USA 1894. d. 8/30/59. He had 10 children: Arthur, Charles, William George, Edith, Nellie, Florence, Catherine, Isabella, Ira, Edward. I have a copy of his birth certificate which shows John Smart and Margaret Anne Prott as parents. Birth was registered in the district of Saint Mary's in the Superintendent Registrar's District of Drogheda in the County of Meath. I've been told that William had a sister who also came to the US and eventually married and moved to Canada. I haven't been able to find out any information on either of them. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? Thanx for your help in advance. Kate Sandoval "I used to waste my time, now I golf"

    1. [SH] JAMES QUINN b: 1815
    2. Betty Hedges
    3. Our QUINN is as follows: JAMES QUINN b: Ireland 1815 ANN (wife) b: Ireland 1818 ( last name unknown) JAMES (son) b: Ireland 1844 JOHN (son) b: Ireland 1846 JULIA (daughter) b: Ireland 1848 ( our link) CATHERINE (daughter ) b: Ireland 1852 ELLEN (daughter) b: New Jersey US. 1856 ANN ( daughter) b: New Jersey US. 1858 Don't know where or when JAMES and ANN were married, for years had her name as MARY. It may have been MARY ANN, don't know. There may have been other children we don't have names or birth dates for. The family left for the US, arrived in 1855 and lived in Morris Co., New Jersey US.. Had been told they took a ship from CORK, but that person is no longer here to get more Information to see if it was the right port they left from or to find the ship's name. In 1860 federal census, JAMES (sr). and JAMES( jr.) were working as miners in Morris Co., New Jersey. Found one record where JAMES (sr). father was suppose to be WILLIAM QUINN and his mother was ALECIA MORRISON. Our link to this family is JULIA QUINN, found where she was suppose to have been born in the Country of Wicklow and then found she had been born in Dublin. JULIA QUINN had married JOHN GARR and they ended living in Livingston, Montana which is about 150 miles from here. I have been working on the QUINN's for over 7 years and when I think I found something it is the wrong lead. Talk about a BRICK WALL, this is mine. This Oct, one of our daughter and her friend will be in Dublin for the 26 mile race. If possible they would like to be able to get some history or be able to take some photos where the family may have been. Thanks for any help on the family. Betty (Montana, US.)

The link below will take you to a website which can tell you how to go about that. http://www.irelandemb.org/fbr.html Best wishes, Anne -- http://www.swan-island.com

    2. Hi, I'm looking for some help in obtaining information on my father's family who lived in Leighlinbridge, Carlow. The name is Meaney, William and he left Ireland in 1913 for New York from Dublin. Any help would be appreciated Catherine, Don't forget to post this on the Carlow rootsweb list and the Carlow rootsweb board. You can find them by going to rootsweb.com. I was in Leighlinbridge this past summer. Nice little town. have you checked LDS for what records they may have? Many baptisms and marriages have been microfilmed to about 1880. And the 1901 and 1911 census records were filmed for Carlow. Debbie

    2. Hi list, The nicknames: Sonny Chip or Chipper Bud or Buddy Skip Junior - June Bug The above are unusually nicknames given to the son, when he & his father share the same given name(s). William A., Sr. William A., Jr. (Bud or Chip, etc.) I have seen in census records where the father is William Anthony & the son Tony. Then "after" the father dies the son Tony uses the name William Anthony, Jr.

    3. Aaarrrgh! Gotta be careful with these nicknames. My uncle William Hartigan is known as Bud. Does this mean that Bud = William?? And a childhood buddy named Ed went by Chuck. Ed = Chuck? I think not. Finally, my great-uncle Gaetano D'Anca (yeah, I know, Sicilian name doesn't equal Irish name, but, stilll...) went by Tony. Very confusing when my father, Anthony, also was Tony. -- --- Richard A. Danca, Newton, MA USA mailto:[email protected] ----
