>From information provided by Ted Meehan, after the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, a number of Mehigans went to France. Later returning to Ireland, some settled in a farm called Kilcoran in the Tubrid parish of County Tipperary. I am particularly looking for the ancestors of 1867 baptism sponsor William Mihigan and 1823 wedding witness Robert Mehigan, as well as the parents of Daniel Mehigan. Many thanks for your assistance. Hi there Listers! Once again I am endeavouring to locate the origin of my great grandfather and his mum and dad. His name was William Walsh and all I have is that he was a native of Galway. His mother was Julia(Judith) Cost(Cust) his father was William Walsh. He had three other brothers, Michael, Matthew, Maurice. They were younger than William - but their father is listed as Maurice(Morris). Could be that William died and his mum married his brother?? I have it that William was born in 1832 (place unknown). Matthew was born 1843 (place unknown). Michael 1842 (Woodford Galway). Maurice 1839 (place unknown). The family, minus father migrated to Australia and arrived in Sydney or Newcastle on 22 April 1856 on board the "Maitland". I can only presume that the family migrated as a result of the great famine. A bit of side information - there is family named Cust living in Newcastle (Oz) whom I am trying to contact to ascertain their family origins to see if they know anything. Also there was a branch of the Cust family who migrated to Scotland and then Rhodesia(Zimbabwe). Thanks in anticipation for any help. Noel Tucker in a very hot, dry and drought ravaged Australia

Looking for info on John SHIELDS born c. 1825 and brother Laurence SHIELDS born c. 1832, (where?) in Ireland. Both emigrated to the US about 1848 (arriving in Baltimore?) and settled in Washington DC where they worked as stonecutters. They lived on 13th St in DC. There may have been other SHIELDS siblings. John SHIELDS married Catherine KELLY, (born c. 1825 in Co. Louth. ) in DC in June 1850. She was daughter of Peter KELLY (b 1797) and had a brother Nicholas KELLY born c. 1822. John died 1859. Laurence SHIELDS m. Harriet BARRETT in June 1860 in DC. He may have been married before. Laurence died 1863. Peter KELLY may be the Peter Kelly who was born in the RC parish of Togher in Co Louth, son of Nicholas Kelly and Catherine Conwell. He died in WashDC in 1864. Of course I'd love to hear frm anyone researching the same family. Janet C-S

Hello Tim: First of all, I want to mention that many Irish who intended to go to USA took ships to Canada because that was the least expensive route. Many new arrivals simply worked as labourers only long enough to pay their fare and other expenses to get into USA so may not have been around during a census taking period. By the way, Canada's census are done on odd numbered years while USA are done on even numbered years. I'm not researching Ferris, but I have run across that surname frequently in my Co. Down research. The Griffith's Valuation CD may help you pinpoint locations for that surname. Sandra
