If anyone has this CD can you write to me off-list please. I'd like to know how user friendly this CD is. I have these volumes and want to know if there is a search tool with the CD that makes it easy to search for surnames and placenames. Thanks, Dave Murray Email Address: [email protected]

Hello All, I am new to this list (and County Meath list) and am making my first posting: I am looking for information on my GGGgrandparents, Catherine (nee PRESTIGE) and John KELSH, who were married in county Meath in the early 1800's. They later sailed to Australia on the ship called Fame, where their daughter, Frances Rachel, was born in route. I am hoping to find any living relatives that still live in Ireland, and any additional information on the families of John and Catherine. John's parents were Marrie and Patrick KELSH. I do not know the names of Catherine's parents. I hope to hear from someone soon. Bill Chapman Sandpoint, Idaho USA

Use that link and then go to the 2nd FAQ page and you will find a very helpful (she said, modestly) explanation of Griffith's Valuation(s). As for the Flax Grower's list, it is a list of people who were given spinning wheels as a premium for growing flax for the linen trade in the 1790s. The lists give names, I think by parish and county, and the number of spinning wheels they got. Mostly names from the northern counties, if I remember correctly. Hope that helps! Janet C-S

Either Charles or Kathie at [email protected] writes: >> Birth was recorded in the District of Ballaghadeaaen, the registrar's District of Caskleea << I'm sure this is Ballaghaderreen, and the other is probably Castlereagh again. >> Parish of Longhglynn << This is Loughglynn, also written Loughglinn. >> My Grandfather, Thomas Scally was born on 10/20/ 1893 in Carrowbehy << The townland of Carrowbehy is located along the R 293 regional road, about 5 miles NE of Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo and roughly the same distance due west of the small Roscommon town of Loughglinn. Carrowbehy is over 800 acres, and has a general boxy-shape, tilted 45 degrees, with a broad extension a bit to the north and a thinner, longer one to the south......shaped sort-of like Texas or India (Wow ! How often do those two places appear together in the same sentence !). The main body of the town is about a mile across in all directions, except the panhandles north and south extend that dimension to about 2 miles. As of 20 years ago, there were only about a dozen buildings in the townland, nearly all of them along a local road just to the north of the R 293, and running more-or-less parallel to it. >> I am coming to visit in early spring next year and would like to visit in that area and find out more about our Ireland family, but I really have no idea where to go and even where to stay. << I would think that a B&B in the general areas of Ballyhaunis or Ballaghaderreen would be a good place to start. Even Castlerea town. All three are within 7 or 8 miles of Carrowbehy. A good place to check for B&Bs would be: >> http://www.townandcountry.ie/ << (Don't forget that these three towns are in two counties) It's a nice area to visit - lots of small loughs, some hills, some woodlands - a fair number of "early sites" in the general neighborhood. I've driven right through Carrowbehy on my way to Urlaur priory a bit to the NW, but I don't recall the townland at all - of course. If you have any questions, let me know. I also have a copy of the baptismal certificate, for the Diocese of Elphin, in the Parish of Longhglynn. The godparents were Hubert and Catherine Kane. I know from the 1901 census, that William was a farmer, Ann Regan, listed as mother lived with them and there were now four children. Thomas, Thady, Anne and Michael. From my grandfather Thomas, Elenor died young and William remarried. There were three more sons from the second wife. Hi list, In the past, I have always asked, at the cemetery office, who pays for the perpetual care or for the upkeep of the graves. This helps you find other relatives, (mostly ones still living). Of course I would ask who purchase the lot & who now owns it. Now, I know to ask for affidavits, too! :) I sent to Woodlawn Cemetery, in the Bronx, for records. When I received the info I received something I never thought of pertaining to the owners of cemetery lots -- affidavits. The affidavits show who the cemetery lots were handed down to through the family -- giving the person's name(s) & relationships. Interesting! With genealogy you learn something new all the time. :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)
