    1. Re: [SHAFFER-L] William, Indiana/Missouri

    3. Hi Shaffer researchers! I am still searching for my Shaffer ancestors and thought I'd see if anything clicks here. My g-grandfather, William Shaffer (I don't know if he had a middle name?), was born in 1868, according to his obit in Tipton Co. IN. My mother remembers him (she was about 8 when he died). She remembers that he was not raised by his natural parents. He somehow as a young boy came to Caldwell Co. MO (in NW MO) and lived with the family of Pleasant Shaffer. According to his obit he had 2 half brothers, one named Amsie Warden, and one half sister possibly named Becky. We know he was very close with William Reagan, who is buried next to him and we believe that may be the other half brother. William Shaffer married Mary Cormany in 1888 and they had 11 children, one of whom was my grandmother. William died in Caldwell Co. MO in 1941. My grandmother and her brothers and sisters said he never would discuss his family and they were always under the impression that he was truly born a Shaffer, but because of the lack of full brothers/sisters with the same name it's hard to tell. I have spoken with a 90 year old man who was the grandson of Pleasant Shaffer who remembers my g-grandfather. He said he truly didn't know where William came from but he was raised by Pleasant who treated him as he did his own son's. His impression was that William may have been a nephew or some other relative of Pleasant (but not Pleasant's son), since Pleasant also migrated to MO from IN and maybe his mother couldn't take care of him and let Pleasant take him (although they came to MO at different times). The other possiblity is that he never really was a Shaffer and that in living with and being raised by Pleasant Shaffer he just took on the last name. Anybody have any clues or suggestions? Anybody researching Shaffer's in Indiana? Anybody have Pleasant in their tree? I would love help on this mystery!
