    3. Hi! Searching for family of Herman Schaefer/Schaeffer of Jackson Co. MN, who moved to Stevens Co. MN and then moved back to Jackson Co. by 1920 something. Herman was in Jackson Co. with a 2nd wife Annie and young child about 6 yrs. old. Herman had children from his 1st marriage: Herman, Anna Marie, and John John was in Jackson and bought a house in Chokio, Stevens Co. from his sister, Anna Marie and brother-in-law, Johann Gerhard Diers. Then he moved back to live with someone in Jackson Co. MN. This Schaefer family came over about 1889-91 from Schweiburg, Oldenburg, Germany. Any ties out there? Thanks! Good searching! Kay Diers

    2. MRS LAURIE J SHAWVER
    3. Hi all, Have been reading these posts with interest and decided to throw in a new twist on the name as I noticed so many common first names used. We are researching my husband's SHAWVER line, which as you can well imagine can be found spelled many different ways. SHAVER being a fairly common one in early VA records. The original immigrant was Sebastian or "Boston" Schauber who was born in Germany 1733 and immigrated to Philadelphia on the "Eastern Branch" arriving 3 Oct 1753. We loose track of him until he shows up in Botetourt Co, VA in the 1770's with family, have not found wife yet! His will was probated in Oct 1816 in Monroe Co, (W)VA. He had the following children: Christopher, Jacob, George W., Sarah, John, Barbara, Elizabeth and unkown female. These same names have been used extensively in this family. William is another one that commonly was used and my husband had a g-g-grandfather Milton. We have found some SHAVER's in VA and WV that we have not been able to connect yet. Have also heard the old tale that there were 3 brothers that came over about the same time but ended up going seperate ways. We know of the Daniel line from PA > OH and other parts west, this VA line also scattered far and wide to OH, IN, IL, IA, MO, KS, OK, TX, ID, OR and WA. Would love to share information with anyone researching this line or who would have any information to help straighten the VA SHAWVER/SHAVER's out! Laurie Shawver [email protected]

    2. First, a thanks to Greg for name & availability of Sheffer Family book. Will visit the FHC asap. I'm not sure the following is of much help, but it might lead to a source which might lead....etc. Vol. 3, part 2 of "Early Adventurers on the Western Waters" by Mary Kegley has a couple of pages on the Shaff(v)(f)ers. The source cited was "One of Wythe's Greatest Craftsman", Southwest Virginia Enterprise, January 1, 1988 by James C. Spraker who has apparently done a lot of research on the family. He also states that John was "believed to be a cousin" of Daniel and John George Frederick who were sons of Jacob and who also settled (at least temporarily) in Wythe County, VA. Kegley devotes most of her entry to John.....land records, Rev. War records, etc. By 1820, Daniel was in Wayne Co., Indiana where he died after 1830. Frederick moved to Greene Co., Tennessee & later to Clinton Co., Indiana. If anyone is interested, I have a little info on them/children/census. Happy hunting!

    1. Fwd: John Shaffer decendants
    2. Good morning: I hope we are all connected to the same line. I have had so much trouble moving backward. My ancestor was William SHAVER born 1792 in Huntingdon County, PA. In 1817, he married Elizabeth (?) born in Chester County PA in 1800. Children John born in Ohio in abt 1819, married Martha Kellums, Francis Marian born Ohio abt 1829, Julia born Ohio abt 1826, Adam born Ohio abt 1834, Temperance born Iowa abt 1838, and twins George W. and Elzina born in Iowa in 1841. His nephew was Jacob SHAVER who was married to Louise (or Louisa).who was born in Ohio about 1813. Children: Isaac, born Ohio abt 1831, Lovina or Covina born Ohio abt 1833, Mary A. born Ohio abt 1840, Peter born Ohio abt 1842, Martha born Iowa abt 1844, and Milton born Iowa abt 1848. Charles Higgens born Indiana abt 1846 also lived with Louisa in 1850. Although William's family had been living in Iowa at least since 1838, when the land West of the Blackhawk Territory opened, evidently around 1843, both men moved their families there, where they lived until they died about 1844-45. The wives and children stayed on, until Elizabeth came West by covered wagon with her children (several grown) in 1852 for Donation Land Claims. While searching Iowa and Oregon records, the name was frequently listed SHAFFER. I believe they were of German origins. I wonder if William and Jacob could be members of your same families. I have the names of many of William's descendants until present day. I hope some of these names sound like a possible match and will provide me with a thread to follow. Michael (b 1757 in either PA or Shenandoah CO Va) is his brother, & my g-g-g--grandfather. I have a friend who says John is really a nephew of Jacob (b 1728 in Darmstadt Germany, d 9 May 1815 near New Market VA) & Maria (or Mary, b 1732 in Germany or PA). My info comes from "The Sheffer Family of Shenandoah County Virginia," by Charles Loeber. This is a printer's proof of a 1944 Shaffer Reunion in Staunton VA. You can get it at the Library of Congress (it is not bound but a loose collection of papers) or through the Mormon Family History libraries. It is on microfilm, & is so thick, it is almost thicker than the spool. On it is the compilation by all branches of Jacob & AHis two wives' families, except Michael's (mine), which was not represented at the reunion. (No, I wasn't at the reunion; I had to wait 8 more years to be born). I know there are a good number of us on this list, Carol, who are descendants. Jacob the emigrant, according to his obituary, was born 30 December 1728, & came here "in his 19th year." He arrived in Philadelphia, & moved to Maxatawny Twp, Berks Co PA before going to Shenandoah Co. VA. The "SFofSCV" states they had a family Bible which named Jacob's older siblings (but they didn't write them down in that document!!!), the first being born in 1711, & Jacob in 1728, being the youngest. The document says his mother's naem was Rosina Nina Roller, but I won't go into here why others have persueaded me that it is not Roller but Keller. Jacob Keller was Jacob Shaffer the emigrant's sponsor when Jacob & Rosina died at an early age. I have ship records, too, & oddly enough, my mother's emigrants were on that same ship! That was seven generations back for me & they came from different places to ride the same ship & probably met each other during the voyage. I hope others weigh in on the John Shaffer m Eve Kelchner & their relatives; this John also died in Sullivan Co Tn, just across the border (4 miles) from sw VA where many of the other relatives lived. Another daughter, believed to be named Pearl, born probably in the 1860s, married a man by the name of HEATH. They were living in Augusta, GA, in the 1920s. William and Emma's son, James Howard SHAFER, was born 28 Jan 1857, in SC. He married Louisa Anna CALLAHAM, b. 14 Dec 1844, in Lincoln Co., GA. They were married sometime in 1876 and lived in GA, TX and Mexico. William died in 1916 and Louisa Anna died in 1918, both in El Campo, Wharton Co., TX. 1. Joseph Shaffer (Schaefer/Shaefer), Ohio Civil War Vet
    2. Stephen A. Shaffer
    3. On a recent trip to the National Archives at Washington to research my own genealogy I wound up obtaining quite a bit of information on a Civil War veteran who proved _NOT_ to be the relative I was looking for. Arghhh! : -( However, the information would certainly be of interest to anyone that _IS_ related to this individual, so I’m taking the liberty of posting it here and a few other places where it might be stumbled on by someone who can use it. The name Joseph Shaffer turns out to be rather common in Civil War records from Ohio volunteers in service to the Union. There were some 14 Joseph Shaffers listed in Service Records and 6 in Pension Records! The particulars of one of these are given below. I do hope this is useful to someone! Joseph Shaefer (Schaefer/Shaffer) was born in Prussia in about 1839. After immigration to the United States (unknown date, port, etc.) Joseph married Margaret Hacket (Hackit?) October 1, 1861 in Delaware County, Ohio. They were married by G. H. Purdy, J.P., and ultimately had 7 children. Joseph volunteered for service in the Civil War and was mustered in for three years service on October 12, 1861 at Delaware, Ohio. He joined Company D (Captain C. H. McElroy’s Company) of the 20th Regiment, Ohio Volunteers. He was described on his discharge as “5 feet, 9 inches high, fair complexion, black eyes, brown hair, and by occupation, when enrolled, a hotel steward.” Joseph was injured erecting barricades at Shiloh on April 12, 1862, sent to hospital in Ohio in May of 1862 and was subsequently discharged due to his injury on August 23rd, 1862 at Columbus, Ohio. He died (of “chronic diarrhea” contracted while in the service of his country) on January 4th, 1877 at the age of approximately 38 years leaving his widow and children as pensioners (Pension Certificate No. 187,036). Margaret died on March 6, 1894. The children’s names, given on a transcript of the Record of Births and Baptisms of St. Mary’s Church, Delaware, Ohio, by the Rector of St. Mary’s were as follows: Nicholas Schaefer born March 31, 1859; Joseph Schaefer born June 11, 1861; Mathew Schaefer born December 11, 1865; Margarett Schaefer born November 30, 1866; John Schaefer born March 9, 1868; Emma Schaefer born September 28, 1872; and Charles Schaefer born March 25, 1874. 2. Jeff Shafer
    3. I am attempting to make contact with a branch of my Shafer side who apparently moved from the Barron County area of Wisconsin to Washington State around the turn of this century. The parents of these Shafers were Frederick (b 2/22/1855 Rock Co WI, d 12/301918 Barron Co, WI) and either Charlotte Alderman, or Henrietta Tate. There is a possibility that the elder children of this family took with them some information that may assist me in tracing the origins and eventually resting place of Fredericks father, John Shafer, and mother Juliana Newell. Oral traditions point to John Shafer being Pennsylvania Dutch.

    2. Shaffer Researchers If I did this right, your reply should go to Cindy. Double check before you click send. The story goes: My grandfather, Herbert Wendel Shaffer, b. 12-13-1917 d. 10-23-1957 was adopted from a children's home before the age of five. We think he was adopted from the Fairmont Children's Home in Fair Hope, Ohio (near Canton). According to his death certificate, his mother and father were unknown and he was born in Canton, Ohio. He died in Canton, Ohio and was buried in Calvary Cemetary in Canton. He was supposedly adopted with his biological brother, name unknown. A Shaffer family adopted the two. They lived in Canton for a while and the parents owned a restaurant. They later moved to Hollywood, CA where they owned a restaurant on Sunset Blvd. My grandfather returned to Canton,OH as a teenager. Supposedly his adoptive parents died (not sure if they really did, where, or how). No word about the brother. My grandfather married Virginia Shaffer (maiden not known) who lives in Florida. She does not know anything about his family. They had four children, Richard, Donald (my father), Phyllis, and Robert all of whom are still living. Several of these family members have tried to find out more about my grandfather's family and have not had any luck. I am looking for any information on Herbert Wendel's brother or adoptive parents. I am desperate to try to at least find my grandfather's brother as it is possible he could still be living. Cindy Thackray [email protected]
