    3. Hello All, Just want to let you know there is a new search engine available at rootsweb. It can be used to search the archives of most mailing lists--the SHAFFER List archive being just one of them. The address is: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl This engine just became available yesterday. As with any new program, it may have some bugs that will need to be worked out. I conducted a few searches without any problems. Enjoy. Mark

    1. Shaffer Christmas Present
    2. Stefanie
    3. Hopefully everyone will get as nice a Christmas present as I got and find a missing Shaffer link. I just found the marriage record of my 3rd great-grandparents, William Shaffer and Margaret SHAFFER. We have been looking for their marriage record for 13 years. A CD (which I bought myself for Christmas) had the clue that led to the state archives to check the microfilm of the original. Our Bible actually says that her name was Shaffer, but since the records were written down long after her death, we thought that no one knew her name and just wrote Shaffer! This has to be a gift from Santa, as our luck with this line is terrible; not only do all the critical records seem to be missing, but things happen like once my car broke down on the way to the research facility and I never made it there. The finding of this record is really a boost to my Shaffer research and I hope that each researcher gets a break on a tough line this year. Merry Christmas and Happy New year. Stefanie Shaffer Todd

    1. Genealogist's Christmas Eve
    2. Genealogist's Christmas Eve (Twas the Night Before Christmas) 'Twas the night before Christmas When all through the house Not a creature was stirring, Not even my spouse. The dining room table with clutter was spread With pedigree charts and letters which said... "Too bad about the data for which you wrote; Sank in a storm on an ill-fated boat." Stacks of old copies of wills and such Were proof that my work had become too much. Our children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads. And I at my table was ready to drop From work on my album with photos to crop. Christmas was here, and such was my lot That presents and goodies and toys I'd forgot. Had I not been busy with grandparents' wills, I'd not have forgotten to shop for such thrills, While others bought gifts to bring Christmas cheers, I'd spent time reserching those birhdates and years. While I was thus musing about my sad plight, A strange noise on the lawn gave me such a great fright/ Away to the window I flew in a flash, Tore open the drapes and yanked up the sash. When what with my wondering eyes should appear, But an overstuffed sleigh and with eight small reindeer. Up to the house top the reindeer they flew, With a sleigh full of toys and 'ole Santa Claus, too. And then in a twinkle, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of thiry-two hoofs, As I drew in my head, and bumped it on the sash, Down the cold chimney fell Santa--KER-RASH! "Dear" Santa had come from the roof in a wreck, And tracked soot on the carpet, (I could wring his short neck!) Spotting my face, good 'ole Santa could see I had no Christmas spirit you'd have to agree. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work And filled all the stockings, (I felt like a jerk.) Here was Santa, who'd brought us such gladness and joy: When I'd been too busy for even one toy. He spied my research on the table all spread "A genealogist!" He cried! (My face was all red!) "Tonight I've met many like you," Santa grinned, As he pulled from his sack a large book he had penned. I gazed with amusement--the cover it read Genealogy Lines for Which You Have Plead. "I know what it's like as a genealogy bug." He said as he gave me a great Santa hug. "While the elves make the sleighful of toys I now carry, I do some research in the North Pole Library! A special treat I am thus able to bring, To genealogy folk who can't find a thing." "Now off you go to your bed for a rest, I'll clean up the house from this genealogy mess." As I climbed up the stairs full of gladness and glee, I looked back at Santa who'd brought much to me. While settling in bed, I heard Santa's clear whistle, To his team, which then rose like the down of a thistle. And I heard his exclaim as he flew out of sight, "Family history is Fun! Merry Christmas! Goodnight!" 3. Don, I have some info that ties into yours below. I obtained it from Paul Shaffer <[email protected]> He can give you more generations either way. I had to cut much of the info out since I have a mac & he sent it on an IBM disk, & my skill at the time of translating was too poor for all the cumbersome information. It may be updated or altered but this is what he gave me (& he is very happy to help you); I think it came from "The Sheffer Family of Shenandoah County Virginia," on microfilm at a good number of the Mormons' Family History libraries. There is also a hard copy of some of it here in Washington at the Library of Congress genealogy dept: John & Eve's children: Jacob (1775, named after his paternal grandfather & gr-grandfather) Henry (1777) George (1781) Elizabeth (1782) Rebecca (1784) John jr (1786) Thomas (1787) Henry (1789) (married Eve Beard & had 8 children-I have names) Mary Polly (1791) William (1794) Catherine (1796) Rose Ann (1799) Sarah (1801) Samuel (1803) Do you have John's siblings, parents & grandparents????? 2. Alex Shafer
    3. My name is Alexander Phillip SHAFER, (b. Mar 28, 1961) I am the son of: Dilts Lucas SHAFER (b. Jan 14, 1918) the son of: Alexander Phillip Shaffer, (b. Mar 15, 1868) the son of : Phillip R Shaffer, (b. Apr 24, 1828) in Lycoming County Pennsylvania >From his death certificate we learned that Phillip R Shaffer's father’s name was Adam Shaffer, we have very little information on Adam. We believe Adam died in 1831 or 1832 according to family legend as the result of wounds suffered in an Indian attack. We found a will from George Shaffer who died in 1838 (born 1764 probably in Germany possibly in Berks County, Pennsylvania) and left some inheritance to Elizabeth Shaffer who had four children—one of them being Phillip R Shaffer. We believe that George took care of Elizabeth after the death of Adam. Given the age of George we believe he was Adam’s father and probably took care of Adam’s family following Adam’s death. If you have any information on Adam or George or anything further please contact me at [email protected]

    2. Mark, My name is Sue Schaeffer, and I'm grasping at straws, along with many other Schaeffer relatives who have been trying to find the parents of John Schaeffer, b.1769 in Pa. m. to Christina Ream from Lancaster, Pa. and moved to Ohio ca.1806. Their children were John Jr., who remained in Oh., Henry, Phillip, Daniel, George John, Catherine, and Margaret and another. ( Don't have my info close) Phillip, my line, married Highly (Hoover)Carver there in Mont.Co., and had kids before moving to Cass Co., Il. All came to Ill. except John Jr. There are census records of them living in Mont. Co. at the same time that Peter and Catherine Schaeffer,(possible parents) were living in Germantown. So even though they had a son John, he's not the one! Just thought I'd check with other Shaffer spellings to see if maybe they changed it along the way. Does any of this sound familiar to you? If so please e-mail me at [email protected] Thanks a lot for you time. I'm new at this, but these newly found relatives have been searching for a long time and are all over the country. The REAMS are easy, but didn't shed any light on John Schaeffer! Hope we connect...... Thanks, Sue
