I was also automatically unsubscribed from a number of mailing lists about 2 months ago - as a result of returned messages & errors . It turned out that my ISP was blocking all messages coming from my email server (I use I-name). Some messages were still getting through in round-a-bout ways, so there wasn't total blockage. If you are experiencing this, check with your Internet Service Provider. In my case, they did it because they were experiencing a vicious internet attack last summer from someone using the same email server. At my request, they removed the block, and it's been OK since. Jim, There is no need to search for the fool who unsubscribed you from the SHAFFER List. It was I. You were one of three addresses I removed yesterday. One of my responsibilities as list owner is to remove bad addresses. When your mail started bouncing, it bounces to me. When it is a fatal error, such as "user not found," I remove it. I have no way of knowing if the problem is permanent or temporary. I do not have the luxury of waiting to find out. If you think the problem is corrected, you are welcome to rejoin the list. Hi Shaffers: I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any information on my great aunt Edna SHAFFER Swartz. She was born to Jacob and Lavinia Huffman SHAFFER on 5 August 1890 in Jefferson County, PA. She married L.B. Swartz on 4 October 1909. I have a copy of an article in regard to their 50th Anniversary and it reports that they resided in Pansy, Jefferson Co., PA. It also states that they were active in the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Grove City. Social security records state that Edna SHAFFER died October of 1979 in PA. L.B.Swartz is reported to have died August 1970 in PA.. I would like to have an exact death date for both Edna and L.B. and where they are buried. Thanks for your help. Kathleen Lobb Hamilton (Shaffer, Geist, Lobb, Hamilton, Maris, Levis, Leedom, Magnier, Stern)

Is anyone familiar with the SHAFFER / SHAVER family who had a daughter Mary Magdalene Schafer born Feb 1763 in PA. Mary married Leonard RICKART/s in Rowan Co., NC in June 1785. The couple later moved to Washington Co., VA and then Butler Co., OH by 1810, then on to Greene Co., IL by the 1840's, where they both died. The Rickart surname may show up as Reiger, Richards, Rickhart, etc. Thank you. G. Mc
Hello Shaffer researchers: I've had some correspondence with Becky Barefoot ([email protected]) in recent days about one Mary Shaeffer (spelling uncertain). She does not appear connected to my line but I thought others might find some connection. If so, please correspond directly with Becky as I don't think she is on this mailing list. Also, please cc me as I am curious. Thanks. Here's Becky's information on Mary: "I know very little about Mary Shaeffer, wife of William Barefoot, having done minimal research on this family up to this point. (I am descended from William's brother Job Palmer Barefoot who lived all by the last eight years of his life in Lancaster Co.) I do know that she was born 3 Mar 1800, the daughter of Peter Schaeffer of Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, and the sister of Levi and Solomon. (There may have been other children.) She was baptzied as an adult 6 Sep 1828 at St. James Episcopal Church in Lancaster along with several of her children. Mary died 2 Feb 1860 in Armagh Twp., Mifflin Co., PA, and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery. She married William Barefoot circa 1818, the precise date is not known, and perhaps never will be. In a statement made 24 Nov 1855 for the prupose of securing bounty land to which she was entitled as a widow of a soldier in the War of 1812, Mary declared 'no public or private accord of [her] marriage could be procured.' "One last thing, I'm not certain of the spelling of Mary's last name -- I've seen it as Schaeffer, Scheaffer, Shafer. It appears that is a problem common to that surname, per your email." -- ********************************************************** Stephen A. The United States Department of Energy CIAC (Computer Incident Advisory Capability) maintains a site on Internet Hoaxes. I believe the information on this site is as reliable as you can find anywhere. Not only does it include information on specific hoaxes, it also has information on how to identify a new hoax. The URL is: http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html Sandy Broda [email protected] Hopefully this will put an end to all this "virus hoax" business and let us all get back to searching for our roots. Looking for any information on Johnathan Shaffer who was born in 1792 probably Pennsylvania. He lived in Fayette County Pa. until about 1850 when he moved his family to Vinton Co., Ohio. He married Martha Smart and had 10 children.
There were a lot of references to Daniel Shafers of Montgomery and a few to Shafers of Crawford. I checked all Daniel Shafers in Orange County in both 1850 and 1860 census but none of them had a son Samuel with them. (These Daniels were all in either Crawford or Montgomery.) Then I saw in church records for the Brick Reformed Church of Montgomery a baptism record for Samuel Pitts Shafer, baptised Nov. 7, 1838. Parents were Daniel S. Shafer and Matilda Pitts. I assume this is your Samuel and Matilda was one of two wifes that Daniel had. Who was the Other? A Matilda Pitts was baptised in the church July 18, 1815, daughter of George Pitts and Elizabeth Barkely. Daniel S. Shafer married Matilda Pitts in the church March 29, 1837. Both were of Crawford and witnesses were Henry Searse and Virgil Pitts. Daniel's birth is a problem. There are four in that church: 1. Daniel baptised Sept. 20, 1789 parents Daniel Shaver and Maria Bookstaver 2. Daniel baptised Jan. 17, 1794 parents Frederick Shafer and Peggy Syncher 3. Daniel baptsied Feb. 14, 1800 parents Daniel Shafer and Caty Weller 4. Daniel baptised April 15, 1817 parents Adan Shafer and Sally Wilkin Given that I couldn't find Daniel with son Samuel in 1850 or 1860 census suggests Daniel was dead by 1850 or had left the county. There are many other Shafers in census for 1850 - I didn't check all them to see if Samuel was with one of them. If anyone can connect with any of these Shafers and help me find which ones do not belong to me, please help! Samuel and Daniel moved to Jackson County Michigan in the early 1830's probably. Daniel and Matilda had a son named Samuel. Samuel married Ellen Birmingham and had a son named Edwin. Edwin married Maud Shepard and they had a son born January 15, 1896 named Claud. He is my grandfather. I don't have much info on this family past Claud. If you can help me out, I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Carol
