From: valauld Full-Name: Valerie H. Auld To: [email protected] Subject: Help Organizing my Research! X-Status: New Anyone have any suggestions on organizing?I have been doing research off and on for 15 years and have 2 huge boxes full of stuff...notes taken from people, books, etc., interviews with relatives, pictures--both old ones passed down and new ones taken at cemetaries, old houses, etc., census notes etc. etc. etc....I have a master list kept on an old Apple IIGS computer program called Family Tree by Broderbund. This has all my names, birth/marriage/death dates and places recorded, but just of my direct line. I have entered no brothers or sisters in the computer as the old Apples require you to store everything on disk, no hard drive, so you have to keep it small or else divide it up onto many disks, which becomes quite confusing. I have the program "Master Genealogist" as well as the LDS program "Personal Ancestral File" loaded on my IBM compatible, but have never GEDCOM'd off the Apple to load it in.Anyway, my question is....what to do with all this paper? Do you advise making a separate notebook on each family name or what. Anybody have a good system out there---I know I'm not the only one in this situation. I have some great research buried in these boxes and am afraid I'm wasting time redoing a lot and probably have good stuff to pass on to others, if I could just get it organized so it is usable and handy.Valerie [email protected] _____________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. I recently came across info concerning William Shafer, born in Virginia in 1813. He was the son of Samuel Shafer who emigrated from northern Virginia and settled in OH. Samuel was the father of 8 children: Henry, John, William, Samuel, Daniel, Edward, Maria, and Eliza Jane. William married Elizabeth Gilbert; fathered 5 children: Elizabeth, Henry (born 10/28/1835), Jonathan R, Cornelius, and Phebe J; and died in 1855. If anyone has connections to this family, I would be glad to e-mail quoted biographies of William and his son, Henry, taken from an 1882 history. Marty Smith [email protected]

Hello I'm searching a Schaeffer or Shaeffer family who resided in Middleport Pa.Schuylkill County from 1820 through 1860. one son - Edward Shaeffer born June 22, 1822 in Middleport, married Roseanah Troutman on March 11, 1845. I would be please to know if any of this data connects with anyone else's search. I believe Edward's father's name was John - surname could be spelled Shafer, Schaeffer, or Shaeffer. - they don't make searching the Shaeffer's easy, do they. John supposedly died in Reading, Pa. from smallpox. Thanks. Shirley

I'm confused......Read a couple post's lately saying their SHAFFER ancestors came from Germany. Is it possible that SHAFFER is both German and Irish? Always thought mine were Irish----they all married other Irish persons.
Been a while since I posted, so will try again- Nicholas John (Johan) or John Nicholas - been found both listings, born April 27 1830, "Germany", died Nov 28 1898 - probably Trowbridge as he is bd there. I have some good leads!!!! Right now I am swamped, but the Missouri location & the name Reagan matches with a relative I talked to in Mercer Co. MO (on the MO-IA border in the center of the state). I talked with a library worker there nicknamed "Pink," who probably could tell you much more quickly than me. Try calling to get hold of her there in the county seat, can't think of the name but it is the home of Calamity Jane. Pink either married a Ragan or was before she married. I talked to a man that she introduced me to who she said in 1991 or so whas 105! My relatives went there in 1840 from Gallia County OH. Others followed. They also had Indiana connections, but my direct descendants didn't. I think the town is Princeton, MO. I can tell you alittle more later. There is a picture with one of my g-g-g-g-aunts & what must have been a family reunion. Rev. G. S. Shaffer Silver Spring MD (transplanted Buckeye) On Wed, 25 Feb 1998, Valerie H. Hi Shaffer researchers! I am still searching for my Shaffer ancestors and thought I'd see if anything clicks here. My g-grandfather, William Shaffer (I don't know if he had a middle name?), was born in 1868, according to his obit in Tipton Co. IN. My mother remembers him (she was about 8 when he died). She remembers that he was not raised by his natural parents. He somehow as a young boy came to Caldwell Co. MO (in NW MO) and lived with the family of Pleasant Shaffer. According to his obit he had 2 half brothers, one named Amsie Warden, and one half sister possibly named Becky. We know he was very close with William Reagan, who is buried next to him and we believe that may be the other half brother. William Shaffer married Mary Cormany in 1888 and they had 11 children, one of whom was my grandmother. William died in Caldwell Co. MO in 1941. My grandmother and her brothers and sisters said he never would discuss his family and they were always under the impression that he was truly born a Shaffer, but because of the lack of full brothers/sisters with the same name it's hard to tell. I have spoken with a 90 year old man who was the grandson of Pleasant Shaffer who remembers my g-grandfather. He said he truly didn't know where William came from but he was raised by Pleasant who treated him as he did his own son's. His impression was that William may have been a nephew or some other relative of Pleasant (but not Pleasant's son), since Pleasant also migrated to MO from IN and maybe his mother couldn't take care of him and let Pleasant take him (although they came to MO at different times). The other possiblity is that he never really was a Shaffer and that in living with and being raised by Pleasant Shaffer he just took on the last name. Anybody have any clues or suggestions? Anybody researching Shaffer's in Indiana? Anybody have Pleasant in their tree? I would love help on this mystery! Hi Shaffer Cousins! It looks like I may have some "free" time on my hands in the next few months. I plan on updating (and correcting) the book "The Shaffer Family History" by Lee B. Shaffer which was last done (to my knowledge) in 1973. For those of you who aren't familiar with this book, it is solely the descendants of Adam Shaffer and Catherine Elizabeth Wotring of Preston County, WV. Adam was supposedly born in Germany between 1760 & 1770, married Catherine in Lehigh, PA around 1789, and came to Preston County in the early 1790's. I'm looking for any and all descendants of this couple (regardless of present surname) to help by contributing their input on this work. I can use GEDCOM files and will be happy to return GEDCOM files to those who submit one once this update is completed. GEDCOM files should show any and all descendants the submitter has for Adam Shaffer up to and including the present generation. Thanks in advance to all those who can help out. Email submissions to me directly rather than through the listserver to minimize traffic. Chuck Miller ([email protected])
I'm trying to pinpoint dates, spouses, etc. of 5great grandfather Nicholas (settled in Nazareth early 1700's), son John, and John, son John (born Sept. 1790) who married Suzanna Seyfreed. I have info on son of John and Suzanna - George Washington Shaffer (my gg grandfather) who relocated from Brier Creek, Columbia Cty., Pa to Overton, PA in 1843. Brother Jacob and wife Anna Margaret Edwards relocated to Overton area about 10-12 yrs. later. I would appreciate any info on Nicholas, John and John/Suzanna. Thanks, Bonnie Carder [email protected]

I am searching for parents and other siblings of Edward Shaeffer born June 22, 1822 Middleport, Pa., Schuylkill Co. He married Rosenah Troutman on March 11, 1845 in Schuylkill County. His father's name could have been John Shafer (difference in spelling) Edward Shaeffer later resided in Centralia, Pa. He died January 8, 1892. If anyone can help me on this search, I will be grateful. I have absolutely hit a stonewall on this family. Have a great President's Day. Shirley E. Ryan [email protected]
Might anyone have a family connection to HELEN ALICE SCHAEFFER? Helen Alice SCHAEFFER b: circa 1870 -1875 d: abt 1904, Schuylkill Co., PA Married circa 1890 - 1895: Stanley PAUPPER (there is some notion his last name may have been KLEPACKI) b: unknown d: abt 1903, Schuylkill Co., PA They had 3 children: Sarah (b: 1892 - 1896; perhaps married someone named FITZ); Eleanor Alexandra (b: Mar 17, 1897 or 1900, Pottsville, Schuylkill Co., PA m: Robert MACFARLAND); Stanley (b: Aug 27, 1902) With the deaths of both parents, the 3 children were orphaned quite young & reared by an aunt who was a sister of Helen Alice's. No one in the family today can remember a name for her. The SCHAEFFERS and/or PAUPPERS might have been in the dry goods business; mercantile. Stanley PAUPPER had a shoe shop. Any help would be appreciated as this is all we have & all we know. Thanks Mary McLachlan [email protected]
