I have finally cracked the code on my Ohio Shaffers! They came from Glovelier, Canon Jura, Switzerland, circa 1849, and their surname was changed from CHEVRE, a French name meaning "goat", that when pronounced with a French accent, sounds a lot like SHAFFER. Two CHEVRE/SHAFFER families emigrated from Switzerland and at least one of them settled in Nishimillan Township, Stark County, Ohio. Some migrated a few miles away to Milton Township, Wayne County, Ohio. If any of you out there are seeking ancestral information that might be a match, here are the two families: 1) Jacob and Anne Marie Shaffer, born about 1790 2) Henry Joseph and Catherine Shaffer, born about 1796 2.1 Henry Joseph Shaffer, born 1823 2.2 Josephine Shaffer, born 1827 2.3 Margaret Shaffer, born 1829 2.4 Victoria Shaffer, born 1831 2.5 Marie Margaret Shaffer, born 1833 2.6 Joseph J. Shaffer, born 1840 Please get in touch with me if any of this looks like a match. Good luck, good hunting, and may the road be kind to you, Charlie Pettersen Charles W. and Judy G. I received this poem this morning and thought everyone would love it. Cindy in Texas [email protected] Many, many years ago When I was twenty three, I got married to a widow, Pretty as could be. This widow had a grown-up daughter With flowing hair of red. My father fell in love with her, And soon the two were wed. This made my dad my son-in-law And changed my very life. Now my daughter was my mother, For she was my father's wife. To complicate the matters worse, Although it brought me joy. I soon became the father Of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became A brother-in-law to dad. And so became my uncle, Though it made me very sad. For if he was my uncle, Then that also made him brother To the widow's grown-up-daughter Who, of course, was my step-mother. Father's wife then had a son, Who kept them on the run. And he became my grandson, For he was my daughter's son, My wife is now my mother's mother And it makes me blue. Because, although she is my wife, She's my grandma too. If my wife is my grandmother, Then I am her grandchild. And every time I think of it, It simply drives me wild. For now I have become The strangest case you ever saw. As the husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa! Author Unknown

There was a lady named Carol Cope or Kope researching my Shaffer related families at the Union Hill Cemetery in Weisspost, PA a few years ago. I was given an address for her in Bryce, VA, but when I tried to get a zip code the post office said there was no such place. She is a second cousin or at least we are related somehow. Does anyone know her? Joan Roth

Hi! Try looking in Cambridge & Zanesville. I'm not sure what counties they were in at that time frame. Guernsey county is the Cambridge area now. I have relatives who lived there later (>1910), but none of the Shaffers I've talked to there were direct descendants. On Thu, 9 Apr 1998, Dkkmc wrote: > Hello, fellow Shaffers. Hello, fellow Shaffers. I hope someone can help me with my family since this is my maiden name and the branch (trunk actually) of my family tree that has refused to grow over years of research. Philip Shaffer (b. 1790 in NJ) married Susanna Drake in 1810 (where, I don't know). At some point they moved to just east of Columbus, OH in Muskingum County. Their children were Steven, William Henry Harrison (apparently just called Harrison), Laura, Elmira, Mahala, John Calvin, Louisa, Eurania, and Simon. Susanna died in 1837, two weeks after Simon's birth. I would very much appreciate it if anyone knows any of these elusive people. Kelley Shaffer Dickinson
