    3. THIS VIRUS WARNING IS A HOAX [re: "WIN A HOLIDAY" --see message at bottom]. You can check it out at http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html Some consider it inappropriate (poor "netiquette") to post virus warnings without first taking the time to inform oneself as to the truth or falsehood of a "new" virus rumour you learn of about... no matter how trustworthy the alleged "original source" is (typically AOL, IBM, Microsoft, gov't agencies). There are several authoritative www sites that will give you peace of mind and keep you updated [just bookmark the URLS or register for the email warnings]. There can be real harm to the 'net just by forwarding virus warnings. If you get one... PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD IT. Same for email chain letters - most are also HOAXES. Here's what YOU can do for self-protection, peace of mind and to keep informed. {All URLs were checked today and all links were alive and working/grh) Either: (1) check the virus warning out yourself to see if it's a HOAX (especially the older ones that are well known) [bookmark any of these www sites -- tho' CIAC is the best] < http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html > gov't site; always up-to-date with the latest HOAXes < http://www.av.ibm.com/current/FrontPage > Big Blue's not bad; N.B.: The IBM virus group recently merged with Symantec [Norton AntiVirus product] < http://www.av.ibm.com/BreakingNews/HypeAlert > HOAXes only < http://www.av.ibm.com/BreakingNews/VirusAlert > Real Virus Alerts < http://www.nai.com/services/support/hoax/hoax.asp > fair to poor < http://urbanlegends.miningco.com > good plain English writeups < http://www.kumite.com/myths > well done site - easy plain English < http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACChainLetters.html > more on Hoaxes < http://afcert.csap.af.mil/hoaxes.HTML > an official site of the United States Air Force computer security organization. or,(2) keep informed about new REAL VIRUSES by subscribing to a reliable, free, VIRUS ALERT warning newsletter. One of the best is found at the Dr. Solomon's Anti-Virus software www site: < http://www.drsolomon.com/vircen/index.cfm > Another -- subscribe to the CIAC Maillist (via CIAC URL above). This "Virus Central" page at Dr Solomon's includes a link to sign up for their automatic email notification of new viruses. I've been on Dr. Solomon's list for 4 months and have received eight notices (their most recent one was issued today)-- so no need to worry about too many emails... FYI.... others to bookmark (aka "Favorites") Dr Sol's main page is < http://www.drsolomon.com/home/home.cfm > McAfee, another prominent antivirus software maker has a Virus Information & Technical Documentation page at < http://www.nai.com/vinfo > (incl link to their HOAX page) [NOTE: Dr. Solomon's AV has been acquired this week by NAI (who also own McAfee). So-o-o-o.., Watch for some changes in the months ahead. Help keep HOAXES from propagating!! // Thanks, Gord Hines (in Regina SK Canada) On Wed 10 June, 1998, [email protected] wrote: > > I just received this and thought I should share it! > > --------------------------------------------------------------- > > Subject: FW: Virus Notice > Date: Wed, 10 Jun 1998 07:36:59 -0500 > From: "Susie Q" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > > THIS MESSAGE WAS FORWARDED TO ME FROM OUR ACCOUNT MANAGER. 1. [SHAFFER-L] thanks
    2. I would like to thank all of you (100+) who have written with their advice on how one should act when sent a virus alert! While some of you were very kind (I am glad this was the majority, thank you) and realized that I meant well, others were extremely rude. I am new to the InterNet and this alert was sent from my best friend since childhood (who I am sure considered it was legit as well) so I thought I was helping. I am fairly new to geneology and have only discovered mail lists in the last couple of months. All I can do at this point is say that I'm sorry, I have egg on my face and maybe I am as stupid/ignorant as some you suggested. But you can rest assured that I have been properly spanked and insulted AND this will never happen again! May we please go back to geneology? Thanks; Patti Waldo Swaim

    1. [SHAFFER-L] LEOPOLD SCHAEFER in IL and IN
    2. Greetings, fellow Schaefer (and all variations) researchers! Seeking information on the family of my husband's great grandfather, LEOPOLD SCHAEFER, born in Germany in about 1859. Around 1885 he married ANNA RING, born in Illinois. Anna died in 1895 after having given birth to 3 children: GERTRUDE, FRANK WILLIAM and MAGDALEN. All three were born in Illinois according to the census. He then married Emma Graper, but they had no children. I believe this may be when they moved to Winfield, Indiana, where the grandchildren remember their home. LEOPOLD SCHAEFER (died 1944) and EMMA SCHAEFER (died after 1944) are buried in Oak Woods Cemetery in Chicago, in the Graper family plot. Anyone out there connected in any way? Karen in Georgia

    3. Hello All Again, I am sorry for the confusion. I am using my wife's computer and also typed my name wrong in the last message. When I stated that some "business concerns" were members of this list, I was not refering to advertisements. We are being watched by persons who's interest is solely to make a buck. I have confirmed two. To remove them is pointless--they will just come back under a different name. I share this information not to make everyone paranoid. Just remember that anything you post here, on another mailing list, or web page is available to all. If there is information that you would prefer to keep private, don't post it. There are likely others who are being more secretive. When you post information to this or any genealogy list, just be aware that not all viewers are honorable.

You can see he is planning on future pages as he already has the places marked out. I said in my offering this to you, "I hope this helps someone out", I have had some feedback and I am happy to have helped in this small way. If any of you would like to link your page to Jim's please do so. We know that there are a lot of us out there who are looking for the same lines, but haven't put the "right" name and place in a query. I wish we could gather more information and put it up...marriages, military service. There is so much that we can do, if we would just begin talking and sharing and combining all of our information. I am adding to the information that is on the Shaffer page, but in 1840 there sure were a lot of Shaffers out there. Well take care, I will send the update to those who already received the first files as soon as I get them done. Kay

    3. Hello All, I have noted several subscribers to the SHAFFER list who are obviously representing business concerns. There are likely others who are being more secretive. When you post information to this or any genealogy list, just be aware that not all viewers are honorable. Marl

    3. Sorry with regards to my ancestor Johan Ludwig Schäfer born 27 May 1755; I have no information on siblings. I found his parents's names in the church records. Johan had a family page; but not his parents. So I can not help you. Denise
