Karlyn and other "Schaefer Seekers", I have a LEOPOLD SCHAEFER in Chicago in the late 1800's. Seems someone (?) could not make up their minds as to where he was born (b. 1859) ... a couple of censuses say Illinois and the others say Germany. His death certificate states birthplace as Germany, and I believe that is correct. His father was CHARLES SCHAEFER. Don't see a connection now, but ot might mean something later??? Hi - Recently discovered my gggrandfather was William Schaefer and his wife was Catherine Reitz. My ggrandfather was Joseph Schaefer b. 1851 in Nassau, Germany. He had a brother "Jake" and a sister Margaret who married a Liser (Lizer?). Based on the birth date of my ggrandfather, his parents may have been born about 1825-1830 or so. The religion was Catholic. Joseph immigrated about 1870. (Don't know when "Jake" and Margaret immigrated). Joseph, Jake and Margaret lived in Chicago area at first. Joseph moved to Iowa after three years (1874?) and farmed and relatives visited him there. No one remembers where exactly in Illinois the relatives lived. Hi Group, I am looking for an Elizabeth Shaffer who was my 3rd ggrandmother. She was born about 1760 in Germany, Pa or Md. She married my 3rd ggf Phillip Frank (Franck b 1749) in Maryland about 1770. Michael My wife is a descendent of a Johannes Schaeffer, b. 1740 Schoharie Co. who was the son of Heinrich Schaeffer. During my research at the Stone Fort Museum I found a Schaeffer genealogy tracing the family from a Gerhardt Schaffer, b. bef 1680 through five generations (18 pages) as well as a second genealogy, covering Children of Johan Henrich Schaffer and Eva Sternberg (6 pages) plus a third genealogy that I noted at the time was "full of errors" that starts with Elisabeth Schaeffer, d. Oct. 28, 1749, and "Johanis Schaeffer, b. 1690, and Henrich, b. 1698 were the first Schaeffers in Schoharie." The genealogy covers descendents through to the mid-1800s (27 pages) .
