Coker is also a surname mentioned by my Mom but I am not aware of a connection at this time. That could be I know nothing about my Shaffer, aka's line of my maternal Grandmother.

Surnames: Noyes, Nye, Shaffer, Pruett, Pruitt, Stauffer, Sherman, Shaefer Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/3hGBAEB/1343.2 Message Board Post: Mynra, I have a feeling we are connected in some way and I see Mark Shaffer replied too, so, hopefully, something can be learned here. I have been trying to years to find my Grandmother's family who too was a Shaffer, Shafer, Shaefer, etc. What caught my eye is the name Harman, aka Henry, Hiram, Harmom which was a given name of my Uncle and it is said he was named after a G-Grandfather (2) or Grandfather's, I can't remember exactly what my cousin told me. My Uncle I had known as Uncle Bud, I was told his name was Harmon Edgar, then his son told me it was Hiram Edgar. My cousin got the Edgar for part of his name and said he was named in the same way of his father. My cousin is living so I am not posting his surname. The name Noyes also caught my eye being connected to Shaffer, as at a family reunion when I was a child, I met a Nye which is also Noy, Noyes, Naylor, etc aka's. I was young and didn't know that family connected until the reunion. My only knowledge is that at the time I am aware, he lived in Springfield, Ohio. I never saw him again, but know my parents did visit. I know not if he is living, he was closer to my parents age and they are deceased, as are all of their generation. Sarah was the given name of my GG-Grandmother in another line, not Shaffer, and Elizabeth seems to have been in every family line I find. Do you have a picture of any of these relatives? I did, but will have to check and see if it is part of the ones I lost. Mark was able to find my Grandmother (given name spelled differently than I knew but definitely her) married to my Grandfather in census. I really don't care to get anymore personal or close to me here online as I try to be careful about that. One on one I would be willing to share information I know. I don't really know the given names of my G-Grandparents Shaffer, Shafer other than the information above, with the exception of the name my cousin was given in the same pattern as his Father that may help us and his surname I haven't posted. Maybe something will ring a bell with you if we do more of this privately.??? On the back of one picture I saw of my G-Grandparents, they were visiting my Grandmother and family. Stauffer's connection was there too and this had to be c. 1920. They were quite gray haired by then or Blonde. hahaha It didn't say from where they were visiting. They were also photograped with 2 of my cousins I never met and I know one is now deceased from the Social Security Death Index. That Father and son died close to one another. Oh, by the way, on the back of my G-Grandparents picture the name was written Shaefer, my Grandma was known as Shafer and Shaffer. Without know the given name of my G-Grandparents, I am at a dead end. If information shared with me and then more throughly researched, then the given name of my G-Grandmother was Jane Sherman, aka's. I know her Father to have been born 1818-1820 and died in Ohio in 1881 per a newspaper obit. I know this is long, but desperate is what I am. My Grandparents had at least one of their children in Shelby County, Ohio. I know they were living in Lima, Allen County, Ohio when my Grandmother died. Pruett, Pruitt is also a name my Mom mentioned as being connected, but I have no clue to anyone of that name at this time. Harmon is the best clue I have found thus far. He may well be my GG-Grandfather too.

    3. I'm taking the liberty of posting the research info I have on Edward Shaeffer/Schaeffer. His parents and siblings have been a brick wall for over 35 years. Here is the outline of info I believe is Edward's brothers/sister. There are similarities in the given names, that may not be conclusive, but there might be a connection. There's gotta be someone out there who has one of these brothers in their line! Shirley In the 1850 census I found.... New Castle Township (which is just outside of St. Clair) Edward Shaffer, 27, miner, Pa. (this is definitely the Edward I'm searching) Rosanna, 22, born in Germany Sara 4, Pa. (this would be Sarah Elizabeth who marries Elijah Murton) Mary 2, Pa. (this would be Mary Ellen who marries Ralph Gibbons) Living next door to Edward is.... David Shaeffer, 30, miner, Pa. - (strongly believe this is Edward's brother) Rebecca 27, Pa. Henry 7, Pa. George 5, Pa. William 3, Pa Lawrence 7 months West Brunswick Township (which is just outside of Orwigsburg) Sarah Shaffer, 50 widow, Pa., Sarah Ann 15, Pa. Matilda 10, Pa. William Shaffer, 25, boatman, $400.00 per prop. value, born in Pa. (this could be Edward's mother, brother and sisters. Edward names his daughters Sarah Elizabeth, Mary Ellen, Louisa Ann, George Henry, Roseana Melessa, Katherine Elmira, Margaret Matilda, Elizabeth Ann, Walter and Edward) This fella might be either another brother or cousin...... West Brunswick Township (around New Ringgold) John Schafer, 35, laborer, Pa. Catherine 26, wife, Pa. Maria 9, attends school, Pa. Angelina 6, attends school, Pa. Until I find further proof, the above info is only a theory, but a very strong theory that these are Edward's family). 1870 Census index shows..... Henry Shaffer, 27, white, male, born in Pa., Schuylkill Co., St. Clair (roll 1450 page 652) William Shaffer, 23, white male, Pa., Schuylkill Cot., St. Clair, (roll 1450 page 644) David Schaffer, 50, white male, Pa., Schuylkill Co., N. Ward St. Clair (1450 page 685) George Schaeffer, 22, white male, Pa., Schuylkill Co., Shenandoah (roll 1450, page 604) Only Shaeffer's in 1870....keep in mind that this is post Civil War and could explain alot) Edward would have been in Columbia County in the 1870 census.

Alfred and wife, Nancy are buried in the Jamesport Cemetery in Jamesport. One daughter Mary worked for the Hotel Drummond at one time. It was also noted that the father was a Samuel Shaffer......could any of these be of your line? Thanks, Virginia Rose

I have always wondered where in the world my grandfather inherited a middle name of Greene or Green unless it had something to do with the area he was born in. After my ggrandfather "Joseph Stanford Shaffer" died in 1869 in Iowa, his wife remarried! to a GEORGE W. HULL & between 1870 & 1873 they moved by covered wagon over the Oregon Trail to Washington Territory in the Whitman Co area of Washington state. Thus the 1880 census states the family. Is there a possible connection? Contact me, Linda Sherman at clsherm@televar.com Thank you!!!
