Can anyone suggest where to look for a marriage licence for a marriage that took place in St Nicholas, Brighton in 1799; would it be Lewes or Chichester, or somewhere else. Also is there a chance it would give more information than just the names of the bride and groom. Ian S Vicary Searching for Joseph Vicary 1763 - 1833

The Marriage Licence was probably granted in the Lewes Archdeaconry. There are surviving licences that were granted in 1799 and they have been calendared & indexed in Sussex Record Society volumes 25 & 26. If you find the item that you want and need to see the original bond or allegation, if memory serves me correctly, they are all at the West Sussex Record Office in Chichester and are on microfilm. I am unsure whether a copy of the films is at the East Sussex Record Office, but they were certainly filmed by the LDS. So, if you intend to make a visit, do telephone first to make sure. Note that marriage licences were also granted by the Faculty Office and the Vicar General and those records are in Lambeth Palace Library. The FFHS used to publish a very useful booklet about Bishops' Transcripts and Marriage Licences. It's probably out-of-print, but you might find a copy in record offices & libraries. Yes, some marriage licences do give extra detail that is useful to family historians - but not all. Best wishes, Marion Woolgar Bognor Regis, West Sussex SFHG Member No: 3323
