    3. John,   I can't beat your record, but I can match it!  My 10x great grandfather was John Ward(e) of Cowfold, who married Ann Gratwicke.  Although I can now confirm a lot of the research myself (thanks to our digital age), much of the work was done by others many years ago, noteably Comber in his Sussex Genealogies.   The most fruitful sources of early information are, as Donna suggests, family wills, but I have found a few documents such as marriage settlements by searching online in the UK National Archives. An example is  28 May 1521John Warde of Cowfold, Sussex, - to Margerie Warde, sister of the said John Warde, whom the said John Saunder had taken to wife, of an annuity or annual rent of 20s. by way of her jointure, issuing out of lands and tenements in Charlewode; which lands and tenements descended to the said John after the death of John Saunder his father by right of inheritance. To hold and receive the said annuity to the said Margerie for her life. With power of distress Dated at Charlewode. Seal @ West Sussex Record Office By John Saunder of Parke in Charlewode - in performance of an agreement with Neal Ward   ________________________________ From: Donna Casey <[email protected]> To: John Green <[email protected]>; "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, 1 August 2012, 21:32 Subject: Re: [SFHG] Baptisms and Burials before 1537. I am pleased to say that I can detail my direct paternal TILLINGHAST line from 1538 to 1997.  I certainly did not do this by myself...much much help from earlier family members and a few recent talented researchers have been by my side as I have uncovered this line. Donna Tillinghast Casey Michigan, USA PS  Some of my recent very early information has come from detailed wills of the mid 1500's.  That is one suggestion I can make to you to find more of your PAGE family line information. Hello everyone,     I may have raised this matter previously, likely years ago and would appreciate any comments, information or suggestions. My 10th great grandfather Robert Page died in 1568 in Hellingly. It is only a guess but I would think he was perhaps born, around 1510 possibly in Hellingly. My information is from an excellenty written and detailed article which appeared in the SFHG Family Historian Vol. 10 No 6, page 222 titled "The Page Family of Wilmington". I realise that records for this period must be exceedingly scant, but possibly since the article was written a good number of years ago further documents of this period may have come to light. I realise that the chances are exceedingly slim but I would be interested to have any comments on this matter. Incidentaly, back from my maternal grandfather Harry Page ( born Wilmington 22 October 1867) the direct male line is continuous back to Robert Page mentioned above. Do any others of our members have a lineage that long in Sussex! .? With kindest regards to everyone, John Green, 9502, in Ontario, Canada. ps I have traced my father's male line in Sussex back to my 6th Great Grandfather.     ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. I have an Ann Gratwicke, married in 1637 to an ancestor John Dennett (b. 1612) at Woodmancote, maybe a grand daughter of John Ward's Ann. A large number of my Dennetts come from the villages mentioned in your recent emails, but there seems to be a frustrating information gap at Sedlescombe before about 1700, and I cannot link my known Sedlescombe line to Woodmancote, where there were many wealthy Dennetts. Some convincing information from American sources suggests links back to DeNet of Normandy and William the Conqueror, with large estates settled on the Dennetts at Woodmancote. My line were blacksmiths at Sedlescombe, which is very close to Battle and Hastings etc. A demonstrated line from 1066 to 1720 would give me boasting rights in Western Australia.
