    3. It sounds as if that could be the source of the confusion, over the years: Ifield, near Crawley, and Isfield, south of Uckfield. That's why I asked about the pronunication - but I neglected to check in the book before posting my question. Sorry about that! I was born & raised in Brighton & something told me from all those years ago that maybe Isfield isn't pronounced as spelt, but I may just be confused because I also knew of Ifield further north in the county.     However, I greatly appreciate everyone's input - thanks to all of you who have responded! I'm coming over later this month & will check it out on the spot then.   Regards Christine Jackson SFHG 397   ________________________________ From: Tony Albery <[email protected]> To: 'Christine Jackson' <[email protected]>; 'SFHG' <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, September 9, 2012 9:07:55 AM Subject: RE: [SFHG] Pronunciation - help please Hi Christine According to my copy of 'A272 An Ode to a Road' by Pieter Boogaart the pronunciation is 'izvil' (in italics with first i bold). Not sure how authoritative this is but the book is a very good guide to places on or near the A272. Found http://www.archive.org/stream/placenamesofsuss00robeiala/placenamesofsuss00r obeiala_djvu.txt which contains a great deal of information on Sussex place names but it doesn't seem helpful in this particular case. (next to Barcombe).   Is it pronounced just how it is spelt, or is the 's' not pronounced (like Ifield)?   Any advice much appreciated,   Thank you Christine Jackson, SFHG 397 ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ----- No virus found in this message.
