Robin, This is usually a sign of a security concious company - your password was held in an encrypted state, so that, when you entered your password, the password you entered is encrypted and compared to the one stored, if they match you are let in. If you forget your password, the website generates you a one time password, which you must reset after logon. I would be more concerned about a website that sends you back your password in a clear text format. Hello. I decided to sign up for Find My Past web site but, when I tried to register discovered that somebody who I do not believe is me had already registered using my e-mail address which I thought slightly odd/suspicious. I received a password reminder which meant absolutely nothing to me. Do new subsribers to FMP usually choose their own passwords or are they just given a serious of purely random letters and numbers by FMP?. I ask as I am going to have to give credit card details and want to be certain that this safe. I imagine that Robin was referring to a password _reminder_ ... a word or phrase originally chosen by the user, that was meant to jog the memory ... not the actual password.
