I am wondering if SFHS can me. I am very slowly sorting out my DICKSON ancestors. The present day DICKSON's are in Portsmouth and they go back to Gloucester in 1861 & 1871 (census records). Further back but with some gaps to Mr John DICKSON b.1797 in Wheathampstead, Herts but spent some of his childhood in Guernsey, CI. I believe there is a Sussex connection, when my ancestor John DICKSON left the Channel Islands to show up in Hove, Sussex (as per the LDS website) where he met and married Hannah CLARK in 1828. Hannah is from Westbury on Severn, Gloucestershire. I would like to use or discount the the Hove connection, firstly with the marriage and then whether they had any children in this marriage. The gap I have at the moment is from "1809 in Guernsey to 1861". On the 1861 census both Mr John & Mrs Hannah DICKSON are living and he is working as a Hatter in Gloucester. They are not showing up in a 1841 or 1851 census. Please could someone help with the Sussex connection. Any ideas would be gratefully received. Patricia Veal SFHS mem no 15228
Patricia, In the SMI, the 1828 Hove marriage record shows John Dickson (bach) and Hannah Clarke (sp) as both of the parish. It seems to have been by banns, further implying that they had been in the parish for some time. I haven't spotted any other signs of them in that area ... children and so on.
