I am looking at a photo of my grandfather in butcher's gear c. 1920s outside a shop with the following words above it, 'F. Skinner Butcher and Pork Butcher and at 123 Islingword Road'. The very prominent numbers are 85 and 86, but I don't know what street it was, nor which village / town. However I have an identical second photo (without my grandfather in it) which has on the back of it, 'Diamond House The Badlets Nr Uckfield'. Can anyone help me identify where / when the F. Skinner butchery existed? Is the address on the back of the second photo (Diamond House etc) the address for the shop at #85 and #86 or does that refer to something else. Family tradition has it that my grandfather worked as a butcher in Hurstpierpoint at some stage. Would that fit? If anyone knows anything about the F. Skinner butcher shop and/or Diamond House, the Badlets nr Uckfield I would love to hear from you. Cordelia 14526
Hi Cordelia I recognized Islingword Road as being in Brighton. So I went to the Historical Directories website, to the Kelly's Directory for Sussex 1915 - at http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp There you will find listed, under Brighton and Hove, Frank Skinner, butcher, at 85 & 86 London Road (west side, St Peter's Church to Preston Road). He is also listed at 123 Islingword Road, as Frank Skinner, pork butcher. Hope this helps Christine Jackson SFHG 397 ________________________________ From: Cordelia Hull <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, January 8, 2013 10:18:16 PM Subject: [SFHG] F.
