When reading some old family Wills in 1600s I kept coming across a word appearing regularly at the end of a line. I couldn't make head nor tale of it. Suddenly the penny dropped it wasn't a word it was a symbol to fill the line for legal purposes. You know so no one could add thing they shouldn't. The fact that a word wasn't needed to make sense should have woken me up sooner.
